How to fix lewmar low profile hatch leak

In 2018 I changed til gasket around the plexiglass to a new one but it was still leaking due to the frame not was tight enough fitted around the rubbergasket, at first I fixed the problem by adding some painters tape to the edge to make it a bit thicker, the point was to get a tight fit.
It worked perfect but water and algaes has now eaten up the tape and the hatch is leaking again.
This time I use the world known butyl tape, it is a sticky rubber like product there is restant to UV and water, the butyl is a product there was used a lot on boats back in the 70 and 80ies.
Now adays they just use nothing or a small amount of silicone to keep the costs down.

One extra step I highly recommend is after cleaning up the main rubber seal throw it in your clothes dryer at a low or medium setting and give it a spin for ten or fifteen minutes. For me this has renewed many different seals from fridges and ovens to deck hatches.

Good video Tino. I believe my port lights are leaking behind the frame where it is tight to the fibreglass rather than getting in by the rubber gasket.i am in the process of removing them, cleaning and renewing the butyl tape in the hope that that will make them watertight. I have so far been unable to source the gaskets for my portlights. But I am going to try Lewmar directly.

I have also a portlight video and it's important to use butyl fugue, not butyl tape due to you must have some squeeze out when you mount the portlight again. The squeeze out show that there is enough butyl fugue on the edge and you then know the seal is good. If there is to little squeeze out you have a potential leak point. If the leak is by the rubber gasket you can glue it back on the frame with Tec7 or Sikaflex. Portlight leak video by the frame : kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmlhxJmdpb3Jm6w.html

I have replaced the gasket with an original one for bavaria bought in England in a shop called ocean chandlery, was not really ceap because I need to delivery to Italy where I leave, but in half an hour I have solved the leak problem, I suspect bavaria have a gasket with a different size , in this shop they ha ve a separate section for Lewmar - Low Profile Hatch Seals for Bavaria Yachts . My doubt or the explanation number 2 is that as I folud on ebay there are two kind of gasket also in standard lewmar Hatches , they use a big gasket for 60 and 65 size. Hope my comment can help.

Hej Tino. Du må have været igennem alt hvad vores båd fejler. Jeg bliver ved med at ramme dine videoer. Det er super. Jeg kan ikke finde butyl tape i den nævnte størrelse nogen steder. Kan du huske hvor du købte det?

@@twiper but I can only find tape thicker than 1mm, and I'm afraid it won't fit underneath. You think that would be a problem?

@@kennethwestergaardjensen93 If the frame fits tight around the rubber gasket I think it is ok. The butyl tape will adapt to the pressure and then create the seal needed to get it watertight. The reason it leaks is due to the rubber gasket shrinks and getting loose over time.

Hi Tino, do you remember what size butyl tape you used to repair the window?

The butyl tape I use in the video is 1 mm. thick and 15 mm. wide. The frame must go on pretty tight to make the hatch watertight, use some silicone spray to make the frame slide more easily on to the rubber gasket. Be careful not to make holes in the gasket when sliding on the frame.
