How to Fix Hip Flexor Pain |

In this episode, Dr. Aaron Horschig discusses how to test and fix hip flexor pain you may have while lifting! A hip flexor strain (also called Iliopsoas syndrome) is often an overuse problem. This means it doesn’t start at one specific time but instead slowly becomes an issue over weeks and months. This injury usually presents a few different ways as well: Iliopsoas tendinopathy (inflammation and/or degrading of the tendon), compression of the underlying bursa sac, and snapping of the muscle over bony areas of the pelvis causing a “pop” feeling.

My hip flexor are tight and weak due to too much sitting. So what's been working for me is to do lunges. I take a big step and go down as far as I can without letting my knee touch the ground. I then hold it in that position for as long as I can, give it a break then do the other side, then repeat. It helps stretch and strengthen the muscles through the range. If its tight, you are going to feel the burn, but it will feel so much better after with more strength in the hips.

Two things come to mind: A) You may notice relief as you have essentially started to improve mobility & stability of the hips and stability of the spine during your warm-up sets, therefor decreasing aggravation of your hip flexors. Eg. You start to stabilise your hips more with your glutes and/or start to stabilise your spine using your abdominal and oblique muscles. B) As you add more load to the bar you may adjust your movement patterns/technique when squatting and/or by placing greater demands on muscle fibre recruitment to support the increase in bar load, you start to stabilize your hips and spine your glutes abdominal and oblique muscles.

I believe i extended to far back instead of bending and lowering my back leg like ive seen in some other youtubers demonstration videos on lunges... Well i noticed the discomfort when i tried squatting and immediatly stopped working out. Now im hoping i feel better tomorrow and gonna try all these stretches and hope to do leg day again toward the end of the week. Any extra advice or tips anyone has would be appreciated.

@@Vulthurn No, only squatted light weight (around 50-60kg) and watched the pain and technique. What actually solved my issue for me was stretching I think. I did a few different hip and leg stretching exercises nearly every day for a few months, and I think now my pain is away for good. The most important thing is to be patient, I was actually stretching for one or two months and nothing was improving, it really just came with time. I wish you the best of luck in resolving your pain, you gonna get through this brother!

I started crossfit late 2017 and into my second month I injured my psoas(R), or so I was told, and went to see a massage therapist who helped loosen up my hip and then after I took about 2 weeks off for recovery. Since that time my right hip has never been the same. It's tight, stiff, etc. The same has started to happen with the left hip. How many time a day/week would you recommend doing this mobility and strength rehab? I work through the pinching but I would really rather not feel it in even simple things like tying my shoes. ☠️

I'd always recommend checking in with a physical therapist or doctor first to make sure there's not a major injury going on. But yes a number of these exercises are things I use with athletes with similar issues. They however should not create any pain, so if they do they're not right for you just yet.

You need to give time for it to heal that's what the stretch is for, even for me I give it a week or more for it to heal due to squat, you might need to stop sprinting for a while and do this stretches everyday

I would no perform the prone leg lift then - sounds like your hip mobility may be limited and we wouldn't want to compromise your low back positioning.

@@Vulthurn I went to a physiotherapist and have some sessions of healing like massaging, heating and interferential therapy machine. Its my 6th visit. I have less pain now but still afraid of raising my leg to my chest or to do atg squat. Doctor suggest me to take it easy and after 10th visit i'll start some exercises. and then finally squat. Meanwhile i am still going gym and performing upper body compound exercises. Sorry for the long message. Will keep you posted.

The thing is, this pain is most likely being caused not by the hip flexor being not flexible enough, therefore u have the pain but pass the flexibility test. Go watch AthelanX's video, he has another take on it, which might help

Pinching not so much - usually its a sharp pain or a popping pain. Pinching will usually be due to something in the joint like an impingement
