How to Fix a Trunk That Won't Stay Open - Honda Accord
I've had to fix the same issue twice so far on this car, and after some brief research online I have found out that this is a fairly common thing to happen with the trunk. So, I've deiced to make this D.I.Y. video in hopes that it helps someone; since I know how annoying it can be to deal with a trunk that won't stay open... and worst of all... when it fell on my head (ouch!).
The reason why the trunk wasn't functioning properly is that one of the torsion bars / springs was broken. In this video I show you step by step on how to replace the torsion bar(s).
I hope you find this video helpful.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m glad to hear you found this video helpful. It’s really not fun when the trunk falls down on my head. 🤕
Honda just quoted $500 to put this in for us 😂. Thank you

No problem! Wow, that is a lot. A good reason to replace it yourself. 🙂
I just fixed my Accord's trunk and thanks to your suggestion to use vice grips it was not hard at all to do. Thanks!!

Thanks for doing this. Useful information. I have a Dodge Stratus but it looks like a similar setup.

No problem. Happy to hear that you found this video helpful. It’s a very common mechanism for a trunk, so it’s very likely that the trunk on your Dodge Stratus functions the same way. Good luck 👍
Thanks for this video. Picking the same bar and clip up from Honda dealership this week to install. They always break.

Thanks for the super helpful video. Something similar is happening in my 2005 Toyota Camry (too many things in the trunk as well). Going to try out your fix soon

No problem. I’m happy to hear you found it helpful. I much prefer a trunk with struts, it doesn’t take extra space and holds the trunk up much better. Good luck with the fix. Let me know how it went. Best. 👍
Use the hammer technique in the video. It works nice quick and easy. Thank you for this video.

Hello what do you call that white thingy to hold the two spring bar?

I believe it’s called “trunk torsion bar clip” or “trunk lid spring clip”. Are you having the same issue with your trunk?

@@carkingspot3973 because these week its been very hot in california and i park my car outside for a week.
I ordered these parts and installed the springs, but the trunk still falls down without offering any resistance. I am not sure where installation went wrong. Parts that I ordered for 2012: Honda Clip Trunk Opener Spring 74873-TA0-003 SPRING, L. TRUNK OPENER 74872-TA0-G00 SPRING, R. TRUNK OPENER 74871-TA0-G00 What does it costs to get this fixed by Honda service center ?

I’m not really what could be the problem. I would recommend looking over to see if everything was installed correctly. Maybe the torsion bars you purchased have a defect. I’ve replaced those bars twice on the same car, and each time the result was a little different. The second time I replaced them it doesn’t hold up the trunk as well as when I replaced them the first time. Maybe you can exchange those bars for a new set and see if it makes any difference. I hope you get it fixed. Best!
Odd the Honda diagram shows the 74871 (R) installing the opposite of how you did it. That is, it hooks on the right passenger and then driver side its put into that torsion clip using pliers or vice grips

That’s interesting. I guess there’s different ways to do it. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for the video. When you install the bar, do you have the trunk fully Open or Close for easier installation? I am fearing if I did it wrong, I might bust my new bars again. Your advise is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

It’s called a trunk opener spring or torsion bar. I don’t know if it would be the same dimension for Civic also.
