Honda Issue Uncovered! Cant access in-bed Trunk / Spare tire - Watch my repair method

* Please watch the second follow up video as I have uncovered additional info on why it failed.
I experienced my trunk bed fail to open on my 2018 Honda ridgleline with 48,000 miles. In this video I show you the issue at hand, How I went about resolving it and how you can prevent this from happening to you in the future. Regardless of what year 2nd gen ridgeline you have I highly recommend you do this fix ASAP!
If this fails and you need to access your spare tire or if you have an emergency kit stored in the trunk and cannot access your bed trunk this would be a major issue.
I have already confirmed with other Honda Ridgeline owners that this electrical tape installation is what Honda is using. I have seen other vehicles experiencing the beginnings of this electrical tape separation issue.

Checked my truck. The right yellow electrical tape had moved away (further right) from the black cable holder. I moved the cable toward the right and moved the right electrical back against the cable holder, and installed two nylon cable ties against the cable holder on each side. I have a nylon cable gun, that will tighten and cut the excess when it reaches a set tightening. Thanks so much for the great info

Thank you for taking the time to troubleshoot this for everyone in the world ! It is amazing that Honda would install a cable and NOT have the only holder NOT screwed into the panel next to it, so it never moved unless it was loosened for adjustment, etc... My 19-year-old Snapper Lawn Mower has a way better cable attachment for the throttle cable than absolutely nothing that Honda did to all its people...

Great troubleshooting skills! Excellent presentation skills as well! This video is hugely useful--thanks for taking the time to create it. I will just suggest checking the temperature rating of the zip ties you use. Not all zip ties are equal. I've seen zip ties I used for car stereo installations become brittle and fall apart due to the extreme heat conditions. I found a chart that indicated the interior of your car can reach 150 degrees F (or more!) with the windows up in summer, on a 100-degree day. I don't know how hot the trunk in a Ridgeline gets in the sun, but you can buy zip ties rated at 185 degrees and higher. Metal zip ties are rated at a whopping 1,000 degrees, which admittedly is overkill. Having an underrated zip tie eventually fail is just as bad as not installing it at all. 😀

I had a similar problem to, but my problem was the linkage inside the tailgate. one day it did not lock, so I unscrewed the back panel and found one of the linkage bars had come out of it's plastic holders. So I did the same as you and put ZIP tie's on all the linkage bars, to their holders, I checked it out, to make sure it works, before I put the back cover on again....the 5 cent ZIP tie's worked out great, no problems now.........You may want to do a video on that subject, because in my case, it did happen and was an easy fix. Thanks for sharing his insightful video, now I'll go check out that yellow tape!

Great fix and wow what a challenging problem. Your fix clearly solved the issue for you. I'm wondering if the real culprit is the retaining clip just before the ball on the trunk release cable. I've had to replace the broken plastic retaining clips on several mechanisms exactly like that you showed. Typically if the manufacturer plastic retaining clip fails the cable housing is pulled past the retainer letting the ball and cable "push" too far as you have shown. An aluminum replacement retaining clip is a permenant solution not subject to failure as a plastic zip tie will be over time.

Thanks for sharing. Great vid. The trunk cover should and needs to be removable or have emergency release capability from the top/outside. This is just poor design and not enough deep dive during design phase. Especially when the spare tire is in there and becomes inaccessible in emergency situations.

16 year RL owner here, 11.08, thats the issue, its been talked about for years. Dont keep stuffing that trunk full, leave some room. If it was an issue Honda will have a recall. I think in the owners manual it states this.
