How To Fix A Squeaking Stairway - Home Repair Ideas

www.homebuildingandrepairs.com... Click on this link if you're looking for more information about stair repairs, building and design. You won't be able to repair every type of stairway with these methods, but you will be able to repair most of the conventionally framed stairways that used individual stringers, treads and risers to build a set of stairs. Keep in mind that most noisy stairs are the direct result of something rubbing up against something else like a nail, step or part of the framing.

Excellent video, screws down the center stringer did the job.

I agree with both of you and thanks for taking the time to comment.
This looks very helpful. I have bad stairs and I don’t have access to the underside to perform the usual repair techniques. I think I’ll try these tips on a few stairs and see if it helps, if it does I’ll do the rest. Thanks!!!

This is a great professionally done video. It is chock full of useful info. Can you give me some insight into 3 step winding stairs that you can’t access the bottom. The three step winding portion of my stairs seem to have no center stringers. Thanks!

Feel free to send me a picture for more information. However, you might need to remove something to access the bottom to actually make the repair.
Great video!

You're welcome and thanks for the kind words of encouragement.
Thank you. I love the graphics in this video and how you went straight to the point. Can you tell me what size screws I should use and how many for each step for the solution you gave at 4:30 ?

If you don't know how thick the treads are then use longer screws, maybe 3 inches or longer and maybe 3 for steps about 11 inches wide in depth.

Hi Guys, I have a situation the same as that at the 1:30 minute mark of your video. The tread has sagged and its natural resting place now sees it sit slightly lower than the lowest edge of the riser. Should I look to jack it back up so it's flush with the bottom of the riser before drilling and screwing, or should I just perform the repair where it is? Thanks for a great video.

First off, if it's a problem, then it should be repaired and if it isn't, then you can simply reinforce it somehow. Make sure the stairway is safe.
Cutting a space between the riser and tread seems to have reduce noise by 200%. Thanks for the tip!!! I did not have access to the underside of my stairs and after performing the suggestion of cutting a space between the riser and tread they are much quieter.

@@stairbuilding could we put a little piece of quarter round or cove molding to cover the gap after cutting?
What if under the Stairs are coved up....

I really don't have a good answer, because of all the different ways to build a set of stairs, but feel free to send me some pictures of your stairway and I'll see if I can help. You can get our email address at our website.
