How to fix a Silverado transfer case pinhole leak with JB Weld - Project Old Grey #6

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome back to Project Old Grey, in which I fix up my dad's old 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3 V8 pickup truck. Today we encounter a pinhole leak in the transfer case. If I can fix it with JB Weld, I could save thousands of dollars (for now at least). Will it hold? I give it a try.

    your hilarious dude. i just sanded my pinhole, used brake cleaner, applied jb weld then a small patch of fiba fuse tape over the hole, caked more jb weld on it then put a sliver of a utility knife over the fiba fuse, then caked more jb weld 6 minute set.... aftet it set i made another little batch of weld and caked it on more.. i would love to drive it like that for a year but i dont know bro. the local transmission shop will change out that cover and replace it with an after market "titanium" one that resolves the problem without putting that guard plate on the inside for about 1300$ CDN ... So im just gonna ask them to keep the old cover. Thanks for your video.

    Thank you and you bet! When I saw your video, I thought “ok here’s proof I can tackle replacing this.” BUT I was just about to embark on moving house/shop from one place to another and knew I couldn’t risk hurting myself (I already had jacked up my finger with a non-locking pocket knife, which made hauling boxes fun). Nor having the truck sitting immobile for a while. Sooooo I went with epoxy for now… take care!

    @@AndrewReuter Sometimes you just have to "redneck it" to get by for the moment. I like the way you think. The finger sounds painful. I slice mine years ago with a utility knife. I still have no feeling in part of my finger. Hope you heal well, enjoy!

    One year test? That's way more trustworthy than most reviews of sponsored tools which are basically just a how to use style. Did you spot more problems on the truck over the time in use?

    The gear shop in Maryland has rebuilt transfer case for $890 with 18 months or $1030 with 36 month warranty. They also update the back casing so as to avoid this problem. Putting one in my 05 silverado in a week.

    Thanks for the video!! I really wondered if jb weld was tried by someone. I know that there is a design problem with these transfer cases and often wondered if jb weld could work in a pinch. One recommendation that I would try is using some metal window screen acting like micro rebar in the jb weld. My plan is to prevent with a case saver at some point. I’ll be keeping an eye out for a leak until I get around to it. At 170k on 03 silverado. Plan is to take care of it when transmission blows!

    Holy crap 170k and no leak yet? I guess this one has close to 180 but I’m rooting for you to have dodged the pinhole here!

    Just an fyi. It will probably hold for 6 months to a year but you will have other pinholes also. GM transfer cases are problematic in that area. Sunce that's an automatic ( shift on the fly 4 wherl drive) it has a clutch/drum setup like inside the transmission and that drum is wearing away at the case in that area. For a proper fix you would need to rear the transfer case apart, rebuild it using a case saver to prevent this from happening in the future. For more info see precision transmission's youtube channel.

    Good analysis, especially on the drum wearing other areas. ! I tried to cover some of that in the video but would also recommend Briansmobile1’s video about installing the case saver. Good stuff.

    I am not expert, but this seems to be the job for a spot MIG welder or something. Can't you just weld the hole up?

  • @AndrewReuter

    @AndrewReuter

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, that’d be ideal, agreed. But you need to be able to weld aluminum, which I can’t do at the moment. (Just need to get an aluminum welding gun for the MIG.) The bigger deal is the cleanliness issue. Material needs to be even cleaner than JB Weld requirements, and that’s tough to get the oil off the back where you can’t get at it. Also the heat from the weld in theory could warp the case. So… that’s why I didn’t go that route here. BUT could be a thing to try when I get around to the good repair. Take the case off, get it super clean, see if I can weld it subtly enough without warping the case. Forging update: My original plan fell through. But I’m about to make a tire changing stick to help change tires on the truck, and I should be able to fit some forging action in there. Will keep you posted! Take care!
