How To Fix A Narrow Palate

If you breathe through your mouth, the shape of upper jaw will be impacted substantially! The tongue shapes the roof of the mouth, so if you have your tongue in the wrong place, you'll develop a narrow palate. Damian Lewis' smile is a good example of this. He definitely needs myofunctional therapy!
Myofunctional therapy along with appliances like the DNA Appliance, ALF Appliance and Orthotropic appliances can help expand and widen a narrow palate.

Mewing is where you engage your tounge from the very back of your pallette and push up with the very back of your tounge while pushing it foward... in a sweep.. this will help widen the upper arch as you push up against the maxila. It is also advised to do strong chewing for lower jaw growth. Whilst keeping good head neck and back posture. The entire tounge should be kept on the roof of the mouth most of the time with lips closed and teeth lightly together... and generslly sit/stand up tall and shut your mouth teeth lighyly together with tounge on the roof of your mouth.

Hi Ann, I think it will just take practice and muscle tone to change that. Once your tongue gets strong enough to stay in the top of your mouth without suctioning it there, that may help. Most people do not have tongues that are "too fat", they have palates that are narrow and tongues that have very low muscle tone.

I have a narrow palate but not sUpEr narrow and I haven't ever had any health problems because of it. Growing up I definitely breathed more through the nose, but I don't know what my tongue posture was, I think both as a kid and as a yound adult (I'm 23) it's been resting at the bottom quite a bit. Also, often I catch my teeth not really touching and the tongue filling the little strip of space between the teeth while touching the roof of the mouth as well. Right now _I think_ my tongue doesn't fit in the palate as it also touches both the upper set and part of the bottom set of teeth when I push it there. I'm not sure if that means it doesn't fit or if it's ok. My question is: I want to widen my palate even though I don't have any health problems. Is that ok to do? Is it dangerous? Is it possible to get a palatal expander which is more mild?

Hello! I've been mewing since...December of last year, I believe. Nose breathing and proper swallowing/tongue posture are pretty natural to me now. I think that my upper arch began to expand because the gap between my two front teeth is back and it's starting to look less crooked, but it's still veeeery narrow. My lower jaw is also narrow (I have a class 3 malocclusion and I'm really trying to avoid surgery). It is honestly really painful these days and I'm in constant discomfort. Could myofunctional therapy, or even appliances, be of any benefit to me? There are no Orthotropists in my state but a doctor in my city does the DNA appliance. I don't mind getting rapid palatal expansion, either. I just want my face to grow the way that it was supposed to and I really want to avoid something as drastic as double jaw surgery.

Great video! I did not know about the Vivos appliance. If you get more information about it I would like to know how it is different from the DNA appliance. I visited their homepage but I could not find any images etc of the appliance. Like another commenter here I too am "mewing". Meaning that I am applying correct resting oral posture while breathing through my nose at all times during day and night and that I am swallowing correctly at all times. Basically, it's the same thing as myofunctional therapy. I'm an adult and in the 3 months I have been doing this I have noticed significant change, I have measured it very thoroughly. It should be mentioned though, that I in addition to everything mentioned above also press upwards with my tongue a lot during the day. I do this to help strengthen the tongue and to improve my resting tongue posture. UPDATE: If anyone else tries to do this keep in mind that the maxilla is very plastic for a bone. Pay close attention to the changes that happen. You do not want to rush the process and risk doing damage. If you do this, my advice is to only do it in the very beginning of the process to help you with tongue posture and tongue strength. I am curious, do you know about the work of Dr. Mike Mew? I'm asking this because I am wondering if all people involved in this new movement (if you will) within orthodontics are collaborating or not. Dr. Mike Mew to me seems to be the most vocal doctor about the importance of the tongue, for example through his youtube page. He also claims significant change is possible even in adults that have lacked correct resting oral posture during their earlier lives, even though he is very clear in that it can take a long time.

I had both my wisdom teeth as well as 4 other teeth removed when I was 14 to solve the overcrowding that resulted from constant mouth breathing. Looking back I am thinking that these measures were dealing with the fallout of having an obstructed nasal airway. Recently I had a septorhinoplasty that has given me the amazing gift of breathing through my nose. Is there anyway to go back and correct some of the issues that I still have? The upper jaw, along with the tongue in the palate, is what guides the correct growth of the lower jaw. So, if the mouth is open and the tongue is low, not only will the palate be narrow, but the lower jaw will develop smaller and at more of a down/vertical angle.

Is palate expansion possible for adults? I have a very narrow palate because of a retractive orthodontic treatment during my childhood and I cannot place my tongue in the correct position because of it. Is there any hope of expansion without surgery? Are there any dentists who can do that? I am very sure that there are none in my country Turkey.

Well I actually want a slightly more narrow face than what I have now (my face is kind of wide and round ) so expanding my palate doesn’t sound like something I’d want to do unless I really really do have a narrow palate . I wish I could slightly narrow down my face (impossible for the most part) and elongate my chin which is very short. While I understand that myofunctional therapy could stop the chin from receding and getting shorter , it can’t actually physically elongate the chin can it? I wish it could .

Some appliances If anyone is interested in doing some more research for their on treatment are biobloc orthotropics, DNA, ALF, homeoblock and myobrace. Some other appliances that are less known are the SOMA appliance which is similar to the DNA but doubles as a bite splint. The FAGGA Fixed anterior growth guidance appliance) and controlled arch braces.

  • @wtfuredead

Depends on your bone plasticity. Cells are in constant dividing and changing, so everyone has a degree of plasticity. Your best bet in order to fix this naturally is to do an extra effort in keeping your tongue on the roof of the mouth. Supplement vitamin D3 + K2(MK7) for bone plasticity, Magnesium and B vitamins(from yeast, not artificial cause your body can't use all of them) for muscle stamina.

Now that my dental arch is wide enough to fit my tongue...I have to do this every other day to stop it reverting back to it's original state. My smile looks about one and a half teeth wider each side but am hoping to improve that...still a work in progress. Hi, maybe you can help me. I have a 11 yr old daughter with severe case of not being able to breath through her nose yrs now. The dentist mentioned her having a small palette and an expander was use for a yr along with braces for her teeth mainly. They were taken off and is supposed to start braces again to work the teeth not palette but I’m holding off on that to work on her nose issue. I didn’t think it had much to do with her breathing. Now listening to your video I think it’s a big part of the issue aside from deviated septum. It’s really affecting her in the worse way. She stops breathing at night, tired all the time school work suffers, etc. It’s to the point she will be having surgery to remove top Adnoids , the other set was removed with her tonsils but hasn’t help. The new ent didn’t mention the small palette. What recommendation do you give. Surgery first then dental work? I now feel the issues are closely related. How can I help her. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
