It's 9 degrees outside and there's a foot of snow coming. Without the plow on my truck, we would be stranded in our home. But the shifter has been loose, getting looser, and has started making funny pinging sounds while shifting. I shift constantly while plowing: driver, reverse, drive, reverse, drive, reverse. I've been genuinely worried my truck would end up breaking down in the middle of the driveway. THIS VIDEO SAVED MY SKIN! Found the screws, they were the problem. Tightened them up, and now I'm ready for winter. THANK YOU.

I’ve literally had this issue for at least 5 years and just chalked it up to it going bad. Just recently when I put it in “park”, it would roll back as if it wasn’t. Taking my daughter to and from school and everything in between , I was worried my truck was dying. This took me 5 minutes and now I don’t have to worry we’ll get into an accident. Thank you so much and keep up the good work.

This literally fixed 90% of the problem. I was told by a mechanic that the cables needed changing and it could be even more complicated than that once he dove into it, then I watched this video and it was spot on! Thanks for this!! Something else informative was a video on how to line up the shifter indicator in the dash with the appropriate gears (P RND21)… I found another video on that because little red indicator wasn’t aligning properly, and it was also spot on! Thank g-d for videos and people like you!! The mechanic would have ripped me off. Looks like I need to find a new mechanic! 😂

This is a very helpful video. My shifter has been loose for some time and I thought it would be a big ticket item to fix and held off bringing it to a repair shop. A screw fell off under the dash and I had no idea where that came from. It wasn't until I can't put it in park anymore, I thought to check out youtube before going to the shop and saw your video and this was exactly the same problem I had with my 94' Nissan Quest. I followed your video to the T and it took me 15 mins to fix the shifter. Thanks a whole bunch. You saved me a lot of stress and anxiety of driving my car. You Rock!

Hi Chris I'm a Ford trained mechanic from England. Actually I'm retired now and living in Canada. I just want to thank you for this quick fix. I have a 1998 Explorer and baby it too much. I was experiencing the shifter problem you cover in your video. I was about to go out and buy a neutral safety switch as there was an intermittent no start issue in Park: my diagnostic skills are failing!! After watching the video it literally took me 10 minutes to tighten the torx bolts. The shifter feels like a new car shifter and no starting issues. Great Channel young man. Thank You.

This video saved my son's bacon today. He bought the truck after it had been pretty used up and the shifter was always sloppy. This morning, he couldn't get it in drive without a lot of pounding and swearing. He found your video and he followed your lead and now his Ford Ranger shifts like a boss. One bolt had come completely out of the assembly and was on the floor board. He said to say "Thank You"! Well done.

OMG, Thank you a million times over for creating this video! My Husband is working nights and last night my Son and I had to have our car (Ford Taurus) towed to our house because it wouldn't shift. So upon watching you're video just now I went out to my car, got out my tools and the inside of the car the bolts were tight. I looked under the hood like you showed and sure enough the bolt broke and needs to be replaced but I was able to slide it back in for now, slide it into park and sure enough my car started and shifted gears perfectly. So now I need to go to the parts store to replace that bolt. You are a rock star, once again THANK YOU!!!!

Chris- Thanks for this video and info on the loose column shifter issue in a Ford (Windstar). I've been trying to diagnose this issue for too long, having intermittent starting problems, and not being able to figure it out. I replaced the battery, cleaned the cables, replaced the starter and the neutral safety switch, and still had starting problems, plus the transmission not shifting into gears. Once I tightened these two bolts however, no more starting or shifting problems. Thanks for the great instructional video. All owners of older Fords need to know about these two problematic bolts.

So I decided to look it up myself. Can't wait to fix it in the morning. Thanks again!!

This is the genius of Chris Fix. My mechanic charged me $250 for a new shift column tube that did NOT fix the loose shifter on my 1997 Ford E150 van. The curious thing is I found that exact shift column screw lying on my driver's side floor mat and didn't know where it came from until I watched this Chris Fix video above. I then looked under the dash and sure enough the screw was completely missing from the column shifter. I confronted my mechanic with this video above and embarrassed the hell out of him. He had been in the business for 40 years and didn't know about this very common Ford shifter screw back out problem. He said he learned something and actually offered me a job. Thanks Chris Fix!!

Thank you Chris. This video solved my problems on my 1997 Ford Explorer 9 years after you posted this. It's amazing that Ford created such a wide spread problem like this. The trick for me was loosening one of the other screws first before screwing in the one that fell out. Also needed someone else to help put the shifter into park better while screwing it in. Easily saved me a tow to the repair shop which would probably cost 1k bucks for it all today.

This video was a life saver, Thanks. This video saved me probably hundreds of dollars. My electric sliding doors did not even open on my mini van. It was embarrassing especially driving girls around on spring break. My car did not even start because It was not going into park correctly. I thought, "man this will cost me probably thousands of dollars." After watching this video I fixed it in a jiff Many thanks and praises!!!

Found this, your KZread-Fix. Looked on car-floor, and sure-enough, found size-30-tork-bolt, laying on the floor. Went to parts store,& purchased a little 'thread-lock, installed missing-bolt, and tightened-other-one, and "Good-as-new" ! !Thank You Very Much Chris.... Wish I could 'Send a Gift Certificate' ? ? ? Had a bad shifting issue on a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis. The shifter was loose and would bounce between the gear selector locations. Sometimes I would have to turn the ignition to on and move the shifter to neutral to start the car. Found this video and went out and checked these two torx head bolts and they were very loose. I tightened them up and now the car is shifting between the gears like new. Thanks ChrisFix!

I just fixed my 1998 ford Explorer that wouldn't go into park.wouldn't start unless I put in Neutral and sometimes vehicle would even roll. THIS was the problem, loose T30 bolts. THANK YOU for video. Alot easier than other videos that only mention the Bushings under steering Column. Check this first.

Worked on my '95 Ford Aerostar! Long, long time issue where getting it into park was not at all reliable, reverse was about 1/16 inch off the P indicator and at times I would have to shift it hard several times into park and hold it there to even allow the engine to start. Slightly different location for the T30 bolts but once I knew what to look for, there they were....and quite loose! Thanks so so much!!!

Absolutely beautiful...........I notice this problem on my 2001 F-150 Lariat. After watching this video, I went out to my truck and discovered there was actually a bolt missing......then I remembered I found one on my truck floor about a month or two ago (not knowing where it came from?). Followed the video instructions and bingo.....good as new. Thank you again !!

Thank you so much, that is one less issue I just resolved in under 5 mins on my 99 Ford Windstar. A local mechanic wanted $85 for labor and tried to convince me I needed some new parts to fix that problem and it was just those two screws the whole time. I just need to resolve my cluster instrument box on my dash for fluctuating gauges and I should be able to pass state inspection now. Thanks a bunch for that.
