How to FISH your way to victory

Спорт

In this video, I explain how you can use fishing shots to win points.
Fishing is where you are forced back from the table, but keep returning your opponent's attacks with medium height balls.
The purpose of fishing is to stay in the rally, until your opponent makes an error or plays a weak shot which you can counter attack.
Fishing is a useful skill to develop. There are always occasions when you are forced away from the table. If you can fish well, you always have a chance to win the point, even when you are on the back-foot.
Thanks to coach Ferenc Horvath for showing us his fishing skills. For more information about Ferenc and his coaching services, go to the Paragon Table Tennis website: www.paragontabletennis.co.uk/

Playing using the "fish" from time to time is fun and can be a good idea. I sometimes go for a serious lob instead but, as you know, I prefer to play close to the table and take balls on the rise. -David in NC

I regularly "accidentally" setup my mates for good spikes and they have like a 25% success rate on them, now I can just claim I was fishing them

Any tips on how to apply this to very quick smashes, as I never seem to reach them in time (this could just be a skill issue but any help would be nice).

Best strategy AGAINST a fisherman: return very very short, make THEM move.

The danger of fishing is when the opponent is a good smasher of high balls. Tom are those socks a statement : i am a pantouflard ?

True. A strong smasher will usually beat a strong fisher. So that is the big limitation. But if your opponent doesn't smash well, then you can stay in the rally and win the point. The socks are just medium level offensive. I have far worse!

When fishing against a strong smasher the key is to lob the ball a bit higher while trying to make it land as far from the net as possible.

Lobbing is when the return is much higher. The term 'fishing' has been around for as long as I have been playing.

Definitely not a just invented term. It's been common terminology for a few years now. Maybe time for a lobbing vs fishing video...

I am playing table tennis since 1992. I have played against few international players who are international medalists who are sponsored by International Olympic association for preparing for Paris Olympics. Literally I heard this term for the very first time ever. May be its not common term here in Pakistan. We in practice sessions simply call opponent to send lower lob so as we can spin the ball instead of kill/smash which do in higher lob.

Same. Never heard that term in Canada. Could be a UK thing?
