Make FEWER unforced ERRORS (real coaching session with Tim)

Спорт

In this video I explain how you can make fewer unforced errors when playing table tennis.
The footage in this video is taken from a real coaching session with a player called Tim.
Tim has improved his technique a lot over the past year, but he goes through periods where he makes too many unforced errors.
So the focus of the session is to improve Tim's reading skills. We work on his ability to read the difference between heavy backspin and light backspin and then play the appropriate attacking shot.
We also work on his ability to read different strokes - blocks, chops, lobs and topspins and make good decisions to keep the ball on the table.

As a tricky player, playing people like Tim is a treat. My goal is to confuse and play unconventional shots all over the table, and I'm punished for sloppiness. A mutual improvement!

Great video. When I play at the local rec center I have an opponent that can add sidespin either curving the ball to me to my left or to my right. I have gotten decent at reading the sidespin and knowing that it is coming BUT sometimes I find myself just not doing enough adjustment to get good contact when I return his return. But I'm learning (yes slowly but yes).

Looking what Tom does is also very instructive. Too few players vary the spin of their pushes, while it's a very effective strategy. Chops might be more difficult to master, but a floating ball should not be that hard to do. And it works great against kids who are used to always loop against heavy backspin 😁

Not only against Kids. I had an opponent which bring me to despair with his variation, there i see how slow i am in reading the right amount of spin and be still fast enough in movement to make a quality return. In mid leagues almost every chopper is good enough to also play a quality Top Spin or Shot to punish a halfhearted return. But to be fair chopper are super rare and most of the time there are only the usual Ox Long Pimples defenders which are even more difficult to read.

this guy has a great FH stroke! it's also a great take-away to vary one's shots all the time...more or less backspin on pushes for example by hitting the ball more toward the end or toward the handle (these give different amount of spin). i can get lots of easy kill shots by hitting back dead balls where they look like backspin from the paddle movement! (on reading the ball...i find it to be super important to watch the ball carefully (the blur of the spin, the flight of the ball, the bounce of the ball on the table...i find these things just as important as watching the opponent's paddle/body.

awesome vid ! I'm just beginning to get the hang of countering shots but judging my body distance from the table still throws me out. As shots get quicker adjusting my position backwards and trying to anticipate which side to cover my angles frustrates me

Thanks Tom. Yesterday my coach and I practiced this. He showed me when is light spin or heavy spin. I have a question: he told me to atack light spin balls and I now how, but how I attack heavy spin balls? For light spin balls I attack them with my bat completly vertical. Thanks again😀

As a general rule, if it is heavy backspin your bat angle needs to be more open and your swing more vertical. When it it is light backspin, you can close your bat angle a little and swing forwards a bit more.

heavy backspin: bat flatter, starting position bat must be below the table and accelerate. light backspin: more closed bat, ready to topspin If the ball goes short, as a beginner just touch the ball/guide the ball to the other side of the table

Becuase you're not a good player (subjective from my point of view), i usually don't come here for advice but i must admit this video is gold. Your tips were fantastic, a lot of players have problem with reading how much spin there is in a pusch or in rallies. (Me included) Top coaching. The best video i have seen from this channel but Craige's serve deception video was also a solid one.👍

@@cldavis33 Depends on perspective. he is division 7, at the very best division 6 material in sweden. He has horrible footwork, blocks at backhand. his forehand strokes are not powerful or super spinny (as far as i can tell). His placements are great. He is quiete knowledgeable, which could make him a great teacher/coach. i think this video is class but often i believe his video is not good. mostly cuz he can't execute what he is trying to teach properly. this channel is obv directed to beginners and low level. (lower than his own or somewhat equal) he for the most part know what he is talking about but his tips are designed for weaker players mostly. there are exceptions to this. Criage, from what i have seen, he is 100 % class. easily better than me. His tips are fantastic for better players. Those videos are why I'm here. I watch all of his videos tho, rarely completely. @@SimonNordlow I mean, yeah, I hear you I do. Very high level players do not go to KZread to get instruction right? They pay thousands of dollars for in person instruction, coaching and mentoring. That's a luxury few recreational players have. Ma Long and Fan ZD, they don't put out youtube instruction. I can watch Tom and Olympic players and pros on youtube side by side. I see what Tom and other frankly look like compared to those guys. I'm 100% fine with it. If I hear one thing that improves any aspect of my game, I'm in dude. I'm in.
