Squarebill crankbaits get there name from the square shaped bill that comes out of them. This bill was designed to fish in and through heavy cover like wood and rock.
You might be surprised how well these baits can come through cover, despite the treble hooks.
There are three main types of cover where I like to fish squarebills. Wood, rock and grass.
In all three situations I am going to fish the crankbait just a little bit differently to try and get more strikes from big bass.
One of the best things about a squarebill crankbait is it really deflects off cover well, which causes reaction strikes from bass that may have not bit otherwise.
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Favorite way to fish. My fishing buddy thinks I'm insane when I cast a squarebill in a tree, but results don't lie
This man always says to stay tuned as the following video will be a good one, and I gotta say he simply doesn't lie. Great video as always!

Great video as always. I find I get my best results results throwing squarebills on a medium spinning rod, 10lb braid to 8lb flouro leader. It casts great and has a great feel.
Very helpful video. I have a whole bunch of crankbaits that I'm usually hesitant to use solely due to the fear of snagging and losing one. Definitely going to put this info to use the next time I'm out on the water!
Fell in love with square bills. Got my PB at night couple weeks ago. 6lbs on a craw 1.5 strike King silent. Such an amazing bait. Great video really, enjoyed it?
Also, you may want to have a FRT (f-up recovery tool). Its a telescoping boat stick with a curly Q thingy on the end. I get back about 90% of my snags on the lower Colorado River with the relentless channel current. Think Bass Pro and maybe West Marine sell them.
Great video. Your casting skills are top notch. I just started fishing again after a long hiatus and I’m constantly trying to improve my accuracy and smoothness. Watching you how it’s second nature is very impressive. It’s 5/11/22 5:06 pm and I’m heading to the water now.
love pitching crankbaits into laydowns works well!!
Great info man. Wish videos like this existed when I started bass fishing!
Good video 👍🏼 I keep “pocket rocks” in my pocket and scattered around the boat. They are 3oz. round sinkers with a snap that I put on the line to knock a lure off a hang up. In several years of using these I’ve only lost both bait and pocket rock a couple of times.
I haven't fished a squarebill much and think I might try it more. Thanks for the great tips and awesome vid👍👍 I hope your little one is doing better.
Yeah! The KVD 1.5 trapezoid crankbait really a great name! Lol!
Great instruction Tyler!! Enjoyed the video.
Water temps here in Va from 57-62F you can’t beat them.
great tips I love to throw a crankbait some times it's hard as a co-angler but I still use it
Thanks for the video. I appreciate the detailed instruction on how to fish a square-bill.
Great to see you back Ty.
Awesome vid just started using them caught a few
Awesome instructional video. Cant wait to try it out on the lake.
Another great video, thanks Tyler!
Great video! It's awesome when you have an example like the grass square Bill slide. More of them slide in other video would be informative on the technique.
Great video. Being from Florida, I don’t really fish squarebills, but I’ve watched other channels to get a better idea for when the opportunity strikes. Other channels haven’t covered it nearly this well. I’ve enjoyed other videos you’ve done, but this one in particular got you a new subscriber.

Love fishing a squarebill for smallies ! A 1.5 hard knock always seems to get bites
Great video, thanks for the tips!
Great stuff love your videos!
Tyler another great video you are so informative
I have used Square bill standing on the riverbank. I have caught a couple of smallmouth on berkley. I have different brands of square bill. I have one that has wild thangs or thing on the bottom of one brand
Great vid man. Learned a lot.
Your channel is so insanely informative.

Thanks man, it means a lot
Great info brother
I love fishing.. bro... Wow.. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🎣🎣🎣
If getting hung up best thing to do is lift bail to create slack in line, then close bait once some line drops. After line drops do a couple pops with wrist to release a snag
Explaining bass fishing is an industry itself..lol
Thanks for the info👍
Great video. Can you do a video on maybe some bank fishing for trout or crappie?
Another great video. One question: when do you with silent vs rattle? Based on water clarity and pressure, or something else?
Great video. It would really be helpful to see how you would fish them from the bank.
Awesome video man. I just got into fishing so learning a lot. This video helped thanks. Are you from Columbus?
First time using a square bill yesterday and got 5 bass in an hour
Could you please do a video on how to fish heavy hydrilla sometime? There are some big private ponds that I fish that is just full of hydrilla.
Excellent
Love the shirt!! Ohio!!
Looks like ur at alum creek
Closer to bank faster shorter casts better angles puts the plastic in the water for more time and in the zone for more time. I have buddies that fish their lil J16 literally 5 yards from bank! They out produce any one of us that is further off 😂
Any hints for fishing a squarebill from the bank ? From that angle fishing lay downs would be tricky, correct?
What is the best all around rod from ARK the money maker?looking to get another stick
I got both Kvd 1.5 and 2.5. They both say they dive approximately the same depth so I’m not sure which one to throw.
Whenever my square bill gets hung in the branches, Its usually 15ft above the water due to a bad cast, still trying to get the hang of a baitcaster.
Is that the same tree from the "fish the heart of the cover" lay down video? Lol
great vids man~ when fishing these squarebills on wood like in this video, is there a retrieve speed that helps avoid snags? slow, medium, fast, paus, etc...? thanks

Slow works best for me , using a 6 speed reel
Alum Creek?
my weakest technique for sure...I have never caught a fish on a crank....do you fish them in standing timber or trees....? great video
What is a rip rap bank?
Take a shot every time he says squarebill. 🤣
When do you use a flat side square bill vs a normal or more rounded square bill crankbait?

And where ?
The thing about lure color is that some lure colors catch more fishermen and women than fish.
I've been trying to bring my square bill game up this year what are your thoughts on using a snap for quick changing lures?
Crankbaits specifically?
Does anyone know what the crankbait at 6:51 is called? found one on the bank and was wondering what brand it was

Are you on oconee
bro literally has an entire tackle box just for squarebills
Never try getting a snag out on tight line ever because lure could snap back an possibly hurt you.
If your not snaggin your not braggin.
im ist poland .głupoty gadasz haaaaaaa
13 minutes video... Catch more bass..... Catches no Bass.... LOL
U didn't catch any fish lol this video was horrible 😭 Bro u should have flipped a Jig on that lay down then u would have caught one lol
You're dead on with fishing where you might get stuck. I tell beginners "Okay you see that really shitty pile over there that looks like you don't want to get your lure anywhere near it?... That's where you cast, that's where they are."
