After a year or more of not catching bass like I used too I watched this video. It reminded me that sometimes I need to return to basics. The rut I was in was more my fault than the fish not biting. Today I went to the lake and used the split shot rig and after my third cast of a dark purple worm I hooked up with a 2lb Spotted Bass. Not large I know but my dry spell has ended. In the next 3 hours I caught 5 more between 2 and 4 lbs. Just catching fish made my day. Thanks for reminding me to keep it simple. Great videos man!

I'm fairly new to bass fishing (at the age of 68), but have been educating myself by watching videos like yours and others. I need all the help I can get because I am the boat captain for my grandsons on their High School Fishing Club. This past Spring I was fishing with my grandsons on Sam Rayburn in East Texas and, even though I didn't know it had a name, I rigged my pole with a set-up exactly (well not quite exactly, I used a YUM Swurm, watermelon/pearl) like you demonstrated here. We were fishing in about 3 to 4 feet of water in under some cypress trees. I caught a nice (between 2 and 3 pounds) bass on each of two consecutive casts! Needless to say, I was pumped. Suddenly everyone wanted to fish the same rigging! Thanks for the video. Now I know I'm not completely crazy! If you are ever in East Texas around Sam Rayburn, I'd love to meet you. You mentioned you may come to a lake in Texas and there's none better than Sam Rayburn!

I know this video is a few years old, but I wanted to report on my use of the rig. Academy Sports was out of all lead products so no split shot. But I did have a small barrel weight and some bobber stops. Added a 1/0 round bend offset worm hook and a June bug Zoom magnum trick work. It was dark so I couldn’t see my line but felt the thump at the end of my rod sweep. I stopped and felt it at the other end. I reeled down and set the hook to the side and pulled in a nice 15-16 inch largie. It works. Now I plan to teach this to my youngest for our trip later this month.

As a beginner, I suggest you try using a Mepps dressed aglia in-line spinner, in size 3 and 4. They come in many different colors, for use in different water/weather conditions. I guarantee you will catch a bass within your first 5 casts. When nothing else in my box works, or I just want to reel ‘em in all day, I use my Mepps dressed aglia spinners. Just cast and retrieve. I have caught more bass (mostly largemouth)with mine, than with any of my other lures and baits, over the past 22 years.

Good vid. I just searched because I plan on doing the same video on my channel. I believe best first lure is a Texas Rig worm in watermelon or green pumpkin (my area). Easy to fish, doesn't get snagged if done properly and almost impossible to fish wrong. Only thing I don't do is use weights. Especially split shot because they weaken the line and if you hook up with a big bass (in my experience) the line will break at the crimp from the weight.

I like your videos. I live in Southwest Louisiana and we have some marshes here with some really nice Florida strain bass in them. There really aren't any tutorial videos on You Tube about marsh fishing. Some of the lake fishing technic's you use can be applied but for the most part, marsh fishing for Largemouth bass requires a different approach. The water in the marsh is crystal clear and it's shallow with lots of vegetation. I would like to see you do some marsh fishing tutorial videos. I'm not a beginner, I've been fishing these marshes since I was a kid, I'm now 56 years old. I'm always open to learn something new.

We called that the Mojo rig and that is what I started with bass fishing. Caught a pile of fish with that rig and a black worm. It is what started it all for me. lol

Use a #3 or #4 Mepps dressed aglia in-line spinner. Color is dependent on water clarity, time of day, cloudy/sunny, etc. You can bank fish them, or fish them from a boat. I have caught many many biggins with these lures, over the past 20 years, during all seasons. When every other lure in my tackle box won’t work on a fishing day, the Mepps dressed aglia always saves the day.

Hey Flukemaster, I'm a Junior in High school right now and 2 of my Senior friends started a bass fishing club with me. Once they graduate I will be leading it. We have lots of new kids, some who haven't even touched a rod in their life. I was wondering if maybe one day you could come in and answer some questions or teach. That would be really awesome both for the younger members and for me to learn to teach better just by watching you.
