Largemouth bass, also known as largies and bucket mouths, can be further categorized into Northern Largemouth, Florida Largemouth, and H1 Hybrids----the mix of the two sub species produces the biggest largemouth in the world, which happens to be over 22lbs, shared by two anglers in Georgia and CHINA.
The largemouth is probably the most widespread among the bass species, found in neighborhood ponds, natural lakes, rivers, creeks, reservoirs, all 50 states, and literally around the globe!
Largemouth bass can be identified by their color and markings, BUT the most identifiable trait is its mouth. When its mouth is closed, the jaw will extend past the eyeball, hints the name LARGE MOUTH.
Smallmouth bass, also known as smallies and footballs, tend to be more curious and aggressive than largemouth and are known as being the hardest fighting of the bass species, sometimes jumping 5ft in the air and literally NEVER giving up.
While they may be more aggressive than largemouth, they don’t grow as big, with the World Record coming in at 11lbs 15oz. There are also sub species of smallmouth bass which include northern smallmouth and southern smallmouth.
Smallmouth can be found in different bodies of water, but they tend to thrive in creeks, natural lakes in the North, and clear water reservoirs. They can be identified by their brown color, vertical bars, and when their mouth is closed, the jaw will NOT extend past the eyeball, obviously why it is named smallmouth.
Spotted bass, also known as Spots and Kentucky bass, also have many subspecies including Kentucky spotted bass and Alabama Spotted Bass.
Spots can thrive in very clear water reservoirs, as well as heavily stained river systems. The biggest smallmouth ever caught was 11lbs 4oz.
Although they look similar to a largemouth bass in color, Spots tend to have an extremely dark and blotchy lateral line, with dark spots occurring just above and just below. Their jaw will not extend past the eyeball, and there is a very recognizable rough patch on their tongue that feels like sandpaper.
While these three species are the most targeted bass, it should also be known that there are other bass species like Shoal bass and Meanmouth which is a cross between bass species.
Interestingly enough all of these bass species actually fall under the SUNFISH Family, while fish species like striped bass and white bass fall under the BASS Family.
In order to catch largemouth, smallmouth or spotted bass you might think that lure selection is the most important element? While this is very important and we will discuss it shortly, the most IMPORTANT element of bass fishing is knowing WHERE bass are located!
There are two categories of lures, horizontal lures and vertical lures. Horizontal lures are meant to be worked horizontally in the water column, these are lures like, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits, etc.
Vertical lures are baits that you cast out and let sink vertically to the bottom, where then they can be worked across the bottom, like texas rigs, jigs, ned rigs, shaky heads, etc.

Wow, that was the most comprehensive description of bass behavior, patterns and fishing I've ever seen. Great idea for a video. Awesome content man!
This was great, I think the one thing you missed out on at the very end though was explaining why dark lures work in lowlight conditions, because on the surface it sounds counterintuitive. My understanding is darker lures work in lower light because they will at least have a decent silhouette around them from the small amount of light that still manages to penetrate.
I’ve been bass fishing 250+ days a year for the past 3 or so years and I still learned a few things from this video it was really well put together

I have never seen any bass fishing video where the presenter demonstrated their knowledge of the fish like this. Congratulations on doing your research well. It always amazes me how many people who are so active in various sports know so little about the details. Examples of lack of knowledge: golfers - type of grass they play on, or how to properly swing a club; bowlers - weight of pins, oil patterns on the lanes, ball materials; baseball - basically all the rules; etc.
I’ve been fishing for years, and this is one of the best, informative, all-encompassing bass video I’ve seen. You break everything down and make it so easy to understand. I have seen so many videos where the narrator quickly goes over stuff like water color/condition and bait and color selection. He’ll say the water is this condition and color so he will XYZ bait without explaining why. I still consider myself such a beginner but I always want to learn more and get better. This video helped a lot. Subscribed.

There was also a new species of bass discovered in June 2022 it’s called the Little River Bass and is native to Oklahoma and Arkansas
A must watch video if you want to catch bass. Seriously, I've probably watched a couple hundred of videos on just bass fishing alone and this is one of the best if not the best. Straight to the point, talks about MANY Important categories, has great animations and pictures, provides a clear and simplistic understanding for the viewer, and even has a joke or two in there. 10 out 10!

I've caught some of the biggest bass here in Ontario using a worm on a bobber, from a boat. Cast into heavily weeded areas in shallow water, allowing the bait to drop 18-20 inches into the water so it sits just above the weeds. Not very sophisticated, but it does work, all seasons (except Winter) and during all parts of the day.
This was probably the best all inclusive “generally speaking” video on bass behavior & bass fishing I’ve ever seen. If only I had seen it years ago. 🤣. Seriously, great video with great graphics. Very well done.

A lot of great information in this video, all broken down to beginner terms as well. Even with these tips they’re still in a broad sense. Bass fishing can be very difficult if you don’t know your waters. In calm conditions bass could feed on loud lures because they’re aggressive, you never know. Only way to know is to get out there and fish 🎣

Tyler, this was a great educational video, in fact probably one of the best. I know you spent a lot of time doing this one. I have learned a lot and I have been fishing for 50 to 60 years but the serious fishing came when I was in my early 20s. I use to fish Lake Lanier for most of my life. I have moved to W.V. and Bass fishing is not easy to find here, can't find many lakes to fish. Thanks for a great video, I have learned a bunch!! Good luck in your fishing career 👍 David

Start fishing 30 before dawn. Come back an hour or 2 before dusk. Use a 10 inch plastic worm (red shad) a 1 ounce rattletrap and a popper. You'll be feeling like Bill Dance 😎

I've been trying to learn about what type of lies and such all day! I'm taking my grandson (13) on our annual camping trip and last year we didn't catch anything! His parents don't fish and he's proud of saying his Grandma taught him. ❤️. He's super excited for this trip and I'm DETERMINED that's he is going to catch fish! The more videos I watched, there more Amazon hunting I did, the more confused I got! The more videos you watch the more differing the opinions are! Who's right? Finally your video laid it all out, and helped me to be able to figure it out no matter where I am, and what the climate, what I need, instead of someone saying "use green worms with spinners" etc. it was easy to understand WHY to pick a certain bait, on a certain day, yadda yadda. I could've watched you're video and saved myself 12 hours!!! Ty so much!!!
