    I used enclothed cognition when i was promoted at work. I had trouble adjusting to my role as a manager, so I started dressing like a manager (in my perspective). Made a world of difference.

    Love the advice, as always. I recall the first time I actually considered my "personal style." Although as a teen I had always envisioned myself in suits and cardigans, having been inspired by characters such as Frasier Crane, Hannibal Lecter, and James Bond, I found such clothing to be both expensive and impractical considering the environment I was in. Furthermore, such style did not allow my inner geek to shine through. Therefore I adopted graphic tees and sweats, with two suits on standby for more professional occasions. Eventually, I had the confidence to go for that "psychiatrist look," and adopted button-down shirts and a blazer. However, I sometimes wore a Starfleet pin on my lapel or upon my vest. Keeping it both professional and whimsical. Yet I had already noticed an aspect of my personality I had not previously considered. Utility. Thus my pants were Dickies Work-Pants, my accessories functioned more as multi-tools, and I favored boots rather than dress shoes. My sportscoat also evolved into something more hardy, depending on the needs of the day. I needed something that could survive a splash of mud from time to time. Finally, my style evolved to what it is today. With function and utility in mind first and style second. Though I do not wear a simple hodgepodge of clothing. I keep to two main themes. Colors of the forest (darker shades, chiefly browns, greens, and reds), and the ideal that one outfit can dress down into three. So I have a complete minimalist look, add a button-down shirt and it gives way to a more "dressy" look, add a coat and it becomes travel attire. I have a simple EDC set-up, occasionally a Filson Carry Bag, Duster in bad weather, and a hat when needed. Not certain what one would call that style, but it certainly evolved over time. Although, on occasion, I do long for my "psychiatrist look." I always felt a part of something bigger somehow.

    Back in college, I started falling in love with chelsea boots. I love how functional and good-looking they are, on top of the comfort they can provide so I bought a decent pair. I still own them and have had them spruced up once or twice, and whenever I have a big presentation coming up in graduate school I still wear them thinking "if they got me through 4 tough years, what's another few more?" Great video as always, Antonio. Made me appreciate little details like that in my life.

    This comes at a really good time Antonio. Since turning 30, I've embraced my baldness, gained some weight, and got divorced. I also moved back to my home state of IL, and have to completely revamp my wardrobe. In my 20's I was performing shows and in good shape, so I dressed for attention. Now, I'm working in the medical field and humbled greatly, and feel more at home in casual based wear in neutral colors. After I put some money aside, I'm gonna take this advice and build a new wardrobe.

    My style is to wear a suit, or at least a sport coat, with tie during working days. I own my own business and can dress how I like, (within reason). I lose the tie and unbutton a button during summer months, and have a very light jacket. On the weekends or after work it’s jeans and Henley shirt, and either a suede jacket, or no jacket.

    More and more, my style icon is Cary Grant. Yes. I am not the same guy I was 10-20 years ago. I don't wear t-0shirts out any more unless it is a special occasion, but am starting to try to be more conservative but still stylish. You are right about dressing better. I know when i dress better, I walk more upright, my eyes are more ahead of me, I carry myself better.

    Don't judge a book by it's cover, that's right, but I don't have the time to get to know if you are a good person, brilliant, funny, etc. So people will engage based on what they know. So take care of your appearance. I am nearly 38 and after the '20/21 lock downs I began dressing better. First with button down shirts, then dressier shirts, and wearing dress shoes and boots, and at least I get some compliments. I am not tall nor slim so at least I get to be the elegant guy in my unit at work!

    Your style advice is invaluable as always, sir. I'd have to say my main style influences come from Star Trek. Now I don't mean I walk around in public wearing a costume I'm speaking of more subtle elements taken from the uniforms. If you watch any Star Trek from 90s to now, most of the action in in the shoulder and chest area. Some kind of subtle detailing, perforations, jewelry or a splash of color in an otherwise monochrome outfit meant to bring attention to the face. Now I do own a "uniform" but most of my outfits consist of a jacket with somekind of shoulder padding/detail or button up shirt of some kind with epaulets or even as you've recommended a "V" shaped opening at the chest like a Henley which is my favorite. I do however wear Trek badges on the reg just to keep it fun.

    I think I needed this video. I have a tough time figuring out my style.. I'm 30, 6ft, 120lbs so tall and very thin. I look young with some masculine features. Cold climate with 4 seasons. I work as an accountant in offices and also coach clients with financial goals. I'm also very into the outdoors and throughout the year I'm camping/hunting/helping on a farm. I also do quite a lot of work on home renovations for friends and family. So I'm always doing things that call for different styles.. Dressing professionally but also dressing for the outdoors speak to me. I don't have a style and just sort of struggle through the daily clothing choices and being tall and thin doesn't help me feel very confident, especially when I'm not layered up. Can styles be mixed to find a great textured outdoorsy business casual look that you'd want to take financial advise from? Have two different styles? I'm not sure how to do it.

  • @Sekiath

    @Sekiath

    Жыл бұрын

    I'd say keep your accounting/financial job as a separate style. I suppose it depends on how professional an appearance your job would expect. But if you're going to wear a more professional suit, typically professional/business is specifically meant to separate the person from outdoors work.

  • @karlr750

    @karlr750

    I agree with @Sekiath. Unless you're doing the accounting for rugged outdoors types, then you need to dress like an accountant and financial counselor. If you are doing the accounting for rugged outdoors types, then you might try blending styles. You might consider tweed jackets, flannel dress slacks, etc. as ways to add texture to a business outfit.

    Thrift stores (especially near wealthy neighborhoods) and eBay can be good places to get deals on high quality items. In addition, a small, interchangeable wardrobe will cost far less than a large wardrobe … particularly if you end up getting most items tailored. Figure out what you need before you start shopping. If you buy twice as many jackets as you need, you're not being as cost effective as you could be … and it could slow down your ability to get some other items that you need. If you find some brands that fit you perfectly, you can avoid the expense of getting them tailored. For items that need tailoring, learn what the various alterations cost, and factor that into the overall cost when you're deciding whether to buy something.

    I find that most advice given these days is met with some resistance, possibly even defensiveness. I guess it depends upon how wholeheartedly they ask for such advice, like if they're watching a channel such as these for knowledge or just entertainment perhaps. I mean, I watch these things even though I already HAVE my own style just because I am curious if I agree with most of them or maybe I get some other new idea, but I find that when offered advice in the more recent past, it was usually somebody with a style completely contrary to mine that I would actually recommend that they see more content like this and judge if THEY are the ones who are TOO casual, etc.

    Yes, the uniform idea kind-of helps with laundry day BUT also doesn't quite work with the whole Capsule idea if you're putting together more elegant individual outfits like the DeNiro character. Like I said in previous vid, if you have a job that requires suits, you will NEED at least five suits.

    Well, I'm not especially fond of hypothetical situations and what-ifs because it can backfire slightly in the direction of anti-fashion as viable option to think that maybe all geniuses should be lazy slobs in dirty jeans but should be taken more seriously by men in overalls than politicians and such in slick suits, like "who's this carpetbagger charlatan and what's he trying to sell me that smells like snake oil?" It's part of the whole reason why jeans became the go-to for all the urbanites now after the whole 60s counterculture thing and all that, but unlike the working men, their jeans cost $200 and they still have some slick suit stashed away to make themselves appear smarter or more trustworthy than they are. Like when Zuckerberg got dressed up for Congress appearance because he's replaced Jobs while trying to keep his "style". It's a long argument with a lot of tangents...

  • @Highland_Paddy

    @Highland_Paddy

    Oh, just after I type that, you talk about the phony politicians trying to LOOK like working men. Yes, this is their reverse-ploy for appeal, and I won't go off on politics or all their slick tricks here, but notice sharp contrast with Jimmy Carter vs. the rest of them, though, that he was still more genuinely altruistic than the ones who've come since who say one thing and then vote another, and Reagan liked outdoorsy stuff like horseback riding where I wouldn't expect him to wear wool slacks.

    You should do a video on Keanu Revees' style. He pulls off suits and boots, pretty well.

    @@RealMenRealStyle You did and it was a good video, but that was about the character John Wick and not the personal style of Keanu Reeves. I think what the OP was referring to was that Keanu Reeves has been seen a few times wearing a nice suit and a brown pair of what looks like, hiking boots. It's like with Johnny Depp and how he'd be seen in a nice suit and army boots or some other kind of boots. they pull it off. It's that carefree, rebellious side that they pull off.

    I don't know what happened to men these days. Men have become lazy and care less about their personal branding or styling. For instance, most of them do not wear French Cuff shirts and Cuff links especially in formal occasions when the apparel with accessories can instantly elevate them as well as differentiate them from others.
