3 billion women --> date more than 1 billion of them as a sample --> keep searching till you find one better than the best of your sample. Assume you find a better girl right after your one-billion sample. It still takes about 31.7 years get your sample if you only date a girl for a long period of 1 second --> 31.7*n year for n-second dates. Such a short life!

You can limit your sample size to those who are interested in you, say 2 billion :)

Ok, so if there are almost 3 billion women on earth. I should go on 1 billion dates, decline them all. And then go on some more dates, and take home the first one that's better than all the ones before?

I don't get it, so how many papers should I choose to find the largest number?

let's say the box contains n papers, you should choose a sample of n/e papers, then if the next paper is largest compares with your sample, that is the one. But, the point is you cannot choose the largest in your sample, in other words, if you reject a girl (or a boy), then she or he will not go back.
