When the Ball is rolling down lane, Focus on the Bottom of the Ball ! The Ball will do 3 things after the Bsll hits the Pocket. 1) Deflect to the Right ( Lowest Strike %, leave Corner Pins ) 2) Drive straight back ( strike 90% of the time ) 3) Continue Hooking ( strike 90% of the time ) Paul

I can usually tell when I’m going to leave the ten pin. To straight and not enough angle I leave the ten pin. If I have enough angle and hit my mark ball strikes. Love the advice Art.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you want the ball to drive through the pins and not deflect off of the head pin. For example, if you're right handed you don't want the ball to deflect to the right you want it to go through and exit between the 8 an 9 pins as he said.

This brings back memories of the days I used to watch the PBA Pro Bowlers Tour on television. Plenty of times I saw bowlers leave the 10 pin. Sometimes you knew right a way it was the solid 10 pin. That was not uncommon sometimes. Sometimes you would see the 6 pin fly right around the 10 pin. Other times the 6 pin would fall into the gutter an would not be able to take out the 10 pin. However there would be apparent good shots where a right handed bowler would leave the 8 pin or a left handed bowler would leave the 9 pin. A memorable example was at the 1974 Cleveland open when Earl Anthony was going to a 300 game. On the last shot he threw an apparently good ball and he left the 9 pin and ended up with a 299. I was amazed that it happened at the time. Someone told me a few years ago that he might bot have hit the pocket quite right and the ball hit too much of the 5 pin so that instead of directing it towards the 9 pin, it directed it to the pit instead.

I’m working with Ron Hatfield (co-author of Bowling Beyond the basics) right now, for about 3 months now. He’s got me focused on the exit point of the ball off he deck as the catalyst to make adjustments. The other thing we’ve added to my game is more speed. Speed = carry supposedly. In the last 3 months my average has increased 9 pins, 202 up to 211. Thanks for your content, much appreciated!

Great video. I read the book last year and it was a real eye-opener. It made me notice how often Randy Pedersen calls shots perfect on PBA telecasts and claims bowlers were unlucky to leave a pin, when the ball actually hit slightly too light according to this book. Apparently even great bowlers can still be fooled sometimes.

What's decieving, is if you look at the data (I looked at this same study data back with the ABC did it, and why we almost all complain about that 10 pin in the example. 17-1/2 is like a 98% strike, 17 is about 95%, but from there to 16-1/2 it drops to around 40-50%! but the catch, as you get farther from the pocket, out to 15-1/2, it climbs back up to around 80%. so barely light hits don't carry well, but if we miss a little more, we are carrying. So, we throw a 3 bagger over 15-1/2, then really nail one "perfect", easily better than those first 3, and boom, stone 10!. turns out it was better, but not in the pocket. it that weird lull where you're better off missing by more!

I have always been told to aim for between the 1 and 3 pin but I guess that is dead wrong. From what you are saying most bowlers who leave the 10 pin hit the head pin at the 4 0'clock mark with the 10 o'clock mark of the ball which would make the ball go between the 1 and 3 pin. But the true pocket is really at the 5 o'clock mark on the head pin being hit by the 11 0'clock mark on the ball. I know it seems like your splitting hairs but it makes a huge difference on the pin action, and that is what you want.

2:20 Isn't a ring 10. It's a WEAK 10. Come in a little lighter (or higher, depending on the deck), and it carries. Ring 10 is when it goes too flush, happens a LOT on Pro-Anvil surfaces/decks.

Yupp, IF you bowled for a decent amount of years, you should be able to read your bowl motion. If not, I'm sorry to say that you will not reach excellens.
