I learned long, long ago that a $100 bottle of wine is not ten times as good as a $10 bottle of wine. The same law of diminishing returns applies to teas.

When it comes to wine just like tea many factors play a role at times the price is justified at times not. I'm way into food and drink so I might be an outlier in this regard though.

Drinking Golden turtle right now and the minerality is really enjoyable. I caught myself trying to chew something but it was the minerality. First time meeting that sensation and I'm starting to get tea drunk. Have a nice week-end everyone and thank you for sharing your experience Don, your insight is appreciated.

The strong character is when you try this tea for the first time and it makes you: WOW!! When it's: meh.. then it's probably still very fine, but you'll have hard time picking it up among similar teas. I have few 'negative' examples like GABA that even your neighbor will know you're drinking GABA, or a yellow tea so astringent that it may kill you. Positive are ultra creamy balhyocha (Korean pu erh), Japanese smoked tea for peated whiskey lovers, or sweet and sour Japanese dark teas (pu erh). My personal favorite is high quality Yunnan Gold (Dian Hong). Love from first sip.

Now that you've pointed this out, I can definitely relate! I have a tea that is as you've described, lacking. but I didn't know what was wrong exactly. Bingo! Thank you for the teaching Don! Great.

Dang, that's a hefty price! I'm always looking out for the best value (i.e. bang for the buck) and my local shop in Tucson, AZ, Seven Cups, sources directly and has so much variety, I have found several that I would have expected to be much more expensive. That's the sweet spot. The Mengding Maofang (Feather Peak) (green) by Luo Ping in Sichuan is a great example at $0.38/gram.

Perfect! I've been waiting for this one, so that I can come back to it and double check when I get the feeling, I might have run into this problem.

@@TheLongAndWindingRoad well I don't own any Yixing yet to compare it too. I actually have two on order, a zhuni and a duanni. However, this particular pot, when compared to porcelain, seems to bolden the bassier notes and round off the higher notes. It is also my understanding that the shape and firing can greatly affect the brew too. So, this is just one example of many.

@@TheLongAndWindingRoad I ordered them from Mud and Leaves. They were the last of each, but the Zhuni is a 115ml Wendan style, which is like a taller skinny xishi shape, and the duanni I picked is a 120ml shaped very similar to Mei Leaf's mooncake pot.

At times a tea with holes like this could probably be saved by changing brewing method. I would really want to taste it brewed Tand style since certain teas does bennefit from being ground down and added directly to water just before boiling and quickly cooled with a splash of cold water and served. Side not if a tea cake when doing Tang Dynasty brewing you lightly toast it very quickly over a small open flame.

As an afterthought: it really is a pity, that these celebrity teas will remain out of my reach for the time being. Especially, as they probably would add to the tapestry of experience on the basis of which other tea experiences could be classed/assessed - but at that price point - 😲- I'd really have to be an aficionado of yancha AND have tons of trust in the purveyor in order to commit.

I got some nug potion, Royal peach orchid, and fur peak coming in a couple days. Based on reviews the only one I’ll be able to find a hole in MIGHT be the fur peak. Maybe…
