Hi Roger, I've been buying live beach worms for years at $1.50 each. Approx $15.00 each trip. After watching your videos and following your info to a tee I can now successfully catch myself my own worms. The stocking and pilchards is a simple but effective method. I wasn't having great success with my fingers at first so I purchased pliers. After decapitating many unfortunate worms I have returned to using my fingers with great success. The most helpful visual tip in your video is, as soon as the worm is attached to the stocking I start to move the stocking slowly towards the beach and at the same time pushing my fingers in the sand and grabbing the worm approximately 2-3 inches down from his head. This system works great for me. Though I'm still learning to catch them when the waves come in. But I'll keep practising. I used to throw most fish back until I watched your filleting video and beer batter video. They were both invaluable and I now have a happy wife as she doesn't have to be concerned with bones. The batter IS fool proof. Thanks so much for helping me Roger. You have made one Port Macquarie fisherman and his wife very happy.

Best video on KZread by far about catching beach worms. Very clear, concise, covers the whole subject and great video footage. I'm 66 years old and live in Cental Queensland and have wanted to catch beach worms for most of those 66 years. I finally snagged my first worm yesterday after watching your video. Yahooo! Now I can't wait to get back up the beach and get some more! Thanks so much Roger for putting in the time and effort making the video and bringing so much joy to so many people.

I'm excited as we're moving to the mid north coast and will be living 5 minutes from a selection of beaches. Thanks for the great content. Here at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, California, we just dig for them at low tide, exposing hundreds of yards of wet sand flats. You can see many holes and its lots of work. Furthermore, sometimes you’ll slice threw them with whatever digging tool being used. I think we have a different species of worm here, but I’ll have to try this technique, which seems much less grueling.

If you can get the sun at the right angle, eg. late in the afternoon, you can sometimes see where the worms are located by the small round flat "fans" that they poke up out of the sand. They can be difficult to spot unless the light is just right & I assume they are some type of feeler. The bigger the worm the bigger the fan which means when you come across a cluster of them you can go for the big worms & forget the smaller ones. I have been able to pull some that were nearly as fat as my little finger & all of 6ft +. Just a couple of those sometimes was enough for a couple of hours fishing for whiting off the surf beach on the Sunshine Coast. But I must admit that it's hard to beat those mud worms we used to dig up when the tide went way out at Scarborough Qld. You could catch almost anything with that bait.

Hi Roger, I am in the UK and use a bate pump to get lug worms on the low tides. Do you think your method would work on lug worms. I have just come out of hospital so will not be able to try it for a while but as Arny said, "I'll be back"

I catch beach worms in south oz. Mainly on hot summer days. Never really bother in the winter because it gets too cold but but also because the yellow fin whiting turn off during winter and that's what we use em for mostly. I may give it a go this winter and try them for the salmon run...

Hi Joey, I am not familiar with the beaches around Melbourne for beach worming. I would like to know if anyone catches worms there. I recommend that you ask some fishing tackle shops in the area if they know if and where people catch beach worms near Melbourne, roger.

Hi mate. Thanks for all advice. Question- can you catch worms on the beach all year around or they are not active during cold months? Cam you catch them on every beach from the ocean side or some beach do have worms and others dont?

  • @RogerOsborneFishing

Yes you can catch beach worms all year round. Most beaches have a population of worms. Some beaches have millions of worms while other beaches are not as good. You just have to check them out, Roger

Michael Rogers ahhh I’ve found on beaches full of pipis that there aren’t any worms but maybe your beach is different? Not sure if they’re that good for bait but If you steam them for 10mins they’re delicious. I think there are heaps of different species of cockles though so maybe don’t eat them unless you know what they are 😂

Hi Roger. Great video. How long can you keep the worms. Do they need to be alive as bait. They are so long, do you just cut some off for your bait. I am a newbie to surf fishing 🎣

Lisa, they can be alive or dead. You can freeze them. Normally I use about a10cm piece as bait.

Mate, enjoyed your video. Good info. I'm from Adelaide, South Australia and you would have to work hard there for beach worms. Many beaches don't have them. Probably beaches east of the Coorong to Robe would be better. We use to use seafood type cat food in one of my mum's old stockings 😇 Dave Sheldon Fishing has some great worming videos. Talented man 👌 Cheers.

Just found your channel Roger. Love it and subbed. When I lived in northern NSW I learned to catch beach worms then I moved to Tasmania and have not heard a lick about beach worms. Have you heard of them in Tasmania? Not asking where just curious of they are here? Any one from tassie caught any beach worms?
