How to Find and Remove the ELV Steering Lock Module in a Porsche Cayenne (2004 to 2009 955 & 957)

Today, we are going to remove the steering lock module from a 2008 Porsche Cayenne. Fortunately, this technique will work on Porsche Cayennes from 2004 to 2009! The removal will be done with simple tools, such as T20 torx driver, ratchet and a flat screwdriver.

In the case discussed in the video, the steering lock module still works. However, in some cases when circuits or the motor fail, the steering wheel will lock up and prevent spinning or turning. Fortunately, Specialized ECU Repair can show how to resolve this issue without dropping the entire steering column out of the vehicle.
The first step is to remove the lower panel in the vehicle near the pedals and put it aside. Next, remove the diffusor for the air conditioning using a torx driver. You should now be able to see the ELV module. Afterwards, remove the driver's side side panels on both sides of the steering wheel, using a wedge if necessary. Some models may have more or less depending on year, but in this case, the 2008 has five.
Remove the dimmer switch and headlight connectors, then take the bolts off to completely remove the panel. Take the screws holding the aluminum bracket out so that you can move the bracket out of the way (note it cannot be removed entirely). Once access to the ELV is uninhibited, you must make two slots on either side of the head of the unit. The video provides reference for this around the 7:30 mark, with a demonstration around 9:15.
The next step is critical. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it on), and you can free up the steering lock. Afterwards, you can remove the connector from under the ELV itself. Once you remove the key after this step, the car will return a faulty steering code/warning due to the disconnected ELV, but that will subside after reconnecting. The important thing is that the steering wheel will now remain free.
From here, there are a few remaining steps with respect to removing and replacing bolts on and around the ELV. The video demonstrates where and how to do this. Once the ELV is free from the vehicle, you can send it to our ECU Doctors for diagnostics and repair.

Thank you for posting this. I will be taking mine out after I charge the battery and try to get my key out. It's currently stuck in the ignition. This problem has been a complete nightmare. Stuck in a parking lot on a Sunday, tow to dealer who quotes $9k (you can almost buy the car for that!), they damaged brake line and wouldn't admit it, unlock the transmission somehow is all they did, then I tow back home to fix myself. Had to buy 6000lb skates just to get in garage where it's sat for 5 months DOA! My 2009 turbo s is essentially perfect other than this problem or I'd have just junked it for all this hassle.

Wish I had found your video before killing myself on my VW Touareg but of course I was looking for a video for that and found none, but here is exactly what I needed only a bit too late to save me any trouble.. I need to reference the other video because I can access that screw due to the lock but yet my steering isn't locked, I hope I haven't done some additional damage, but knowing my luck, I probably have.

Hi, the ELV module is programmed to the vehicle, so it cannot be swapped with another ELV without it also being programmed.
New subscriber.. I have cayenne with steering lock fault that happened because of attempted start with low volts. Now it won't connect with my scanner. I believe I need a certain different type of scanner called durametric? It's $400. Is this only way to clear code? Prior to this my cayenne was acting strange.. My rear wiper won't turn off,(had to pull fuse) sometimes remote fob wouldn't work.. Only would lock, not unlock. The steering fault appeared after it sat for week getting drive shaft installed. Battery ran low and BANG steering fault flashing after attempted start. Won't do anything.. Only flashers work. Radio turns on for 2 seconds then off.

There's always a chance that you can fix is by clearing the code. However, I don't think you have to buy a durametric scanner. It's likely that any generic scanner might be able to get the job done. amzn.to/3htBVjC We can always take your ECU SET here and diagnose issue for you.

@@SpecializedECURepair Something similar happened to me, I let my car sit on the driveway for about a week or two and when I came back, the battery was dead. After I charged the battery it said "Steering Faulty" but before this happened, I didn't have any other issues starting the car. When I try to start it now, it says "Steering Faulty" and I can't turn the wheel or shift it out of park. When I pull the shifter button I can hear a click in the key cylinder. Does this sound like the ELV? Is there some trouble shooting that I can do at home to make sure that the ELV is the issue and not something else? I have also tried multiple different scanners and had ZERO luck. I have tried a $20, $40, $150 and $4,000 scanner and had no luck. Thank you.

Which is the OEN part number???

the ELV does not have a OEM number because it is not sold separately from the entire steering column.
My steering wheel is not locked...but steering faulty still pops up

Yo tengo una cayenne s 2004 y se prendió el código de sterring faulty pero no esta lockeado el volante. Tampoco prende, ni el radio ni las ventanas y la palanca de cambios

@@SpecializedECURepair Buenos días. E visto otros videos donde revisan los cables debajo de la alfombra porque se mojaron. Y es ahí donde encuentran el problema. Ya me paso de que se mojo. La alfombra yo sin darme cuenta hasta que destape el desagüe.
