How to find an open circuit or shorted wire the FAST easy way. Also called a fox and hound tool, the tone generator and amplifier probe make finding an open circuit much faster and easier than using a continuity tester or circuit probe. Extech 40180

I retired from AT&T use the tone generator for 40 years after reading some of these comments I think it's too simple for them to understand you turn the amplifier down to the minimum volume and when you get close you can tell the difference in the amount of tone being generated and that's where you start looking for your problem but you have to listen to the tone

I guess the reason this video made total sense to me and not others is because I use one all the time in computer networking, and know how they behave. It really is as simple as trace your toner down the wire until the tone fades off, and you've found your 6 to 8 inch area to search for a broken wire. Also because when Brian says "short" I can listen to what he means not what he says and understand he means an open break in a wire.

You're the first guy who actually traced one wire using ONE lead (black) of that tone generator. All the other demonstrations I've see used two wires and both black and red leads which made me think the device could not trace one wire. I only want to trace one non-energized a/c wire (behind sheetrock) and see if its among a group of wires at another location. THANKS! Follow-up...I purchased a Fluke that's similar to the tool you're using and it worked just as you demonstrated. I found the wire I was looking for and was able to repair my a/c lights and power receptacle issues very quickly. THANKS AGAIN!!

Im an electrician and this is my favorite tool in my bag. I can find ac wires in attics, junction boxes, panels, walls. Ive fixed my van with it, and used it on an aircraft carrier for complex equipment some pretty amazing distances. The one I have currently I bought from harbor freight for 12 bucks, and it works like a champ. I even screwed a drywall screw into a plywood wall, hooked a lead up to it, the other to a ground, went on the other side and found my exact mark where i want to drill.

I did not realize how old this conversation was. I agree with other posters, don't confuse an "OPEN" with a short circut. If it is a SHORT circuit there would be blown fuses or "TRIPPED" electrical Breakers. In my 30+ years, (IN NEW JERSEY) I can say , it has to do with salt effects after a snow storm. Electrical connections don't like salt,(neither do I) I have put in over 120 man hours in the last year on our 2004 Tahoe , with 160K miles and I still need to replace/repair,,,, SOOO many things.

The handheld wand is an induction amplifier so it picks up EMF or other transmissions and amplifies them. That is why you can hear the 60hz from the electrical cable in the wall. The same holds true for the toner in that you can hook it to a wire to trace (with power OFF) and you point the little tip at your wall and sweep it back and forth and listen for the loudest tone. You can then sweep and follow that wire. I found a wire that was open one time and I told the guy where it was but that I had to open the drywall. Behind the wall was a buried junction box where the wire burned open. They had the box packed with dry newspaper to allow for the drywall to be patched. What happened is they changed a window out to a door and cut and extended the wire on either side of the door. The customer only let me fix one side so I had him sign a waiver that I attempted the complete repair but he was refusing to let me fix it...SMH...I mean it's not like there isn't a possibility of it arcing and burning possibly starting a fire? It already did that...people...

My grandma's van doors stopped opening automatically, dash lights and tail lights quit working. A shop wanted $7k to "diagnose" with the possibility of not fixing it. So I said fuck it. Pulled out my multimeter, traced wires, checked all the fuses. Everything was good. I finally cleaned off the negative terminal of the battery it had a small amount of corrosion and boom it fixed everything and it's never had a problem again for years now. All over a little corrosion, it could've cost an elderly woman $7k lol

It can work on wire break only. Try this. Take a 14 gauge, or any gauge, and shave about 2/3's of the wires. You will still get tone. So, shorts to ground or high corrosion will not register. It's a great idea, but it does have it's limits.

Hi, I wanted to thank you for your video. I'm quite horrible with electrical. I've been for the past hour trying to wrap my head around isolating one wire in a wiring harness using a multimeter, a 9v battery and some alligator clips. I thought it'd be simple enough to push a voltage down one wire and then read it on the other end (not understanding about return paths). You didn't completely solve my problem, but you inspired me to use the continuity mode on the hound of my tone generator set to push the voltage on the pin and then read the pin on the far end of the extension harness to accurately detect which wire was going where. The problem with tone generators is in close proximity to other pins, the volume of the tone can be equal making it unclear which pin in a harness is the exact one. By reading the voltage with a multimeter you know exactly which one is getting all the love.

Great tool to find shorts in doorbells, intercoms in apartment buildings! I have used it with much success. If you use it for 110 volts be sure to disconnect power to wire at breaker or fuse before working on live circuit. It can be used to successfully trace a wire or wires. Not good for wires in conduit with multiple conductors as energized circuits can give false reading when circuits are hot.

The better fox and hound probe kits have a 60Hz filter switch on them, so that you can get rid of any nearby AC electrical interference or hum from overhead lighting, etc. A must-have when needed to isolate a wire in low-voltage circuits such as this one.

  • @ADPTraining

@briansmobile1 Thanks. One technique on using this unit is to remove the fuse and connect the two alligator clips across the fuse using two jumper wires. This technique is useful in the event that you need to follow a power distribution circuit. An example would be a fuse that's popping all the time due to a short. With this technique, the component that's shorting the circuit would be the only one with a tone, identifying the culprit immediately. Good luck.

Power Probe 3000 has ben on the market for some time and does a good job of finding the location of your problem. It send a signal down thru the wire and you trace this signal with a handheld probe that provide you with a lit symbol telling direction you should follow and this light changes to a dot when you reach where the break or short is. I you cross over the short the light will reverse direction. Great thinking on part of Power Probe and in providing a good engineering solution.

I have a same tool but of a different brand but they all work the same. However, it will not find a short. A short makes two wires as one wire. Tone will continue for the entire length of the wire. Opens, yes since the signal will fade after the open, however, an adjacent wire will pickup the signal and radiate and you may miss the short. It takes practice with trail and error to get close to an open with bundled wire. A simple AC circuit behind a wall can also throw you off. If you put the toner on the BLK and WHT wires(no power) and only one of them is open, you'll past the open. Again, experience using the tool takes time but it is still a great tool to have. May use it once a year as a homeowner but it's indispensable.

I suppose if the sound fades at a junction in the flex loom, you'd try following possible routes, eventually finding either the short, or, the end of the circuit. That said, the device is quite large, and difficult to get deep up into the dash. Still though, even if it doesn't find the short, it could possibly guide you closer to the problem.

Actually, you CAN find a short using the fox and hound probe, because if you find that MORE THAN 1 WIRE, has the tone, when it should NOT, then the wire with the tone is shorting to the wire that should not have the tone. This occurs often when I am doing cross-connects in phone room.

Right now chasing down a battery drain on a 2001 Cavalier, brand new battery, it's fine if you drive it every day, 13.6v running (alternator charging) 12.36 after 30m off, about 11.5v by the first start of a morning which is enough to start, but after 3-4 days of the car not being driven the battery reads 6 or 7 volts. I see these tone generators on Amazon for as little as $37 (Fox Jr and Hound Jr kit with carrying pouch) and $70-$90 for nice ones.

a cut wire = an open circuit most of the time. Ive used this devise for many years while installing security systems. Its very hand when sheet rockers have rocked over your pre wire install. If the wire is shorted, IT WONT TRACE. it only picks up the tone in an open circuit.

The manufacturer of the Extech 40180 Tone Generator does not make any claim to finding shorts in wire in a cable. This is a "linesman" device, used for primarily for tracing wires in a cable, mainly for IT and telephone communications. Yes, it will allow you to find where an "open" in the cable occurs, however, it cannot distinguish between a "short" and a normal electrical junction in one of the wires.

First you would remove any equipment that is attached to the wire you will be testing such as say a clock, a radio or even a light bulb. For that would effect your reading with the tone generator hocked to the wire and frame saying the frame is normally you ground where all equipment hooks too. Next see if the tone generator has a solid tone setting of a pulse setting you may wish to try each most of the time it is what ever is working the best and the operator of the equipment can hear best. Now see if there is a power output level of the tone generator. If so start on a lower setting and see if you pick-up the tone out away from where you have hooked it up at with you probe. This may take some time at first to get the feel of doing this. It is very easy once you see what is actually going on and your doing it hands on. Now actually hooking it up to the frame and wire your testing . Apply tone to the frame and the other lead from the "Tone Generator" goes on the wire your testing. So you signal will then travel to the closest location of the faulted wire to the frame from the "Tone Generator" and will stop there you may here a bleed over slight tone sound still past the fault depending if the faulted wire to the frame is solid it will stop at or very close to that fault to the frame. But if the wire to the frame is a high open or a light fault you will at least hear a change in the sound of the tone generators signal. You would locate the closest fault clear the fault or repair it. And pt the tone generator back on the wire to see if the signal travels to the end of where the wire goes to with good clean tone on the wire from the tone generator. Note: if your testing a wire that has a problem with fuses blowing as it wold sound in the above instance. Testing where the fault is on a wire to the frame. You may also find or need to test for multiple faults on the wire but find it is not just to the ground or frame rather. It may be crossed or faulted to other positive wires in the bundle also. You can hook the tone generator to more than one wire at a time to get a general idea if that has happened but you will need to test between your wire with tone on it and the lead from the tone generator to another wire you may think it is faulted too. Most of the time a person will still use a volt ohm meter first to see where the wire is faulted to then you use tone to see where the tone signal stops on the faulted wire or the tone changes as in the pitch or sound level volume. As I mentioned before look from the tone generator out to where you signal changes, just always make sure ever piece of equipment is off the wire first. And the same would go like this say the faulted wireis also a ground wire which is grounded to the frame as in most vehicles. There are instances where a ground wire can cause trouble on it even if it is faulted to the same frame where it the wire is grounded too. here again just treat it all the same disconnect the wire going to the frame and and equipment that is hooked to that ground wire. Next continue as before hook one side of the tone generator to the faulted ground wire and the other lead to the frame and test from the tone generator out. Your fault is where you signal stops or changes on the wire your testing.. Also most of the time the tone generators have a red & black test lead you connect. Try to hook up your red lead from it to your faulted wire you will be tracing and listening to the tone on and the black to where it may be faulted too. Running a complete open in the wire is easy same process but easy to find where the open is unless it to is a high open or light open fault in the wire then the sound of the tone will change but that change location is the fault location. And never think that you cannot have more than one fault on a wire. Always retest with a volt ohm meter after you clear one fault before thinking your done. I know I just made this worse read parts you can understand a little at one time, then go on to the rest. There is no way I can explain all the different fault testing like this. But if you can get to understanding what I'm trying to explain you have a good shot at it. Take care, aka; Fred. .

The one thing that can make it confusing to some people is thinking it is a cure all for a circuit with so many redundant grounds while checking it can bypass the open wire while being bundled due to the fact that a redundant ground can be in proximity to the open, still great video, I think it will be a good to play with. FALSE PROMISE in that he is not showing some of the cant do situations. I worked with telephony many years ago. Business phone systems typically use 25 pair wires in one single cable, (LOL, I did say many years ago) The automotive harness is similar in many respects. When you clip the tone emitter to a pair of wires (or several pairs at once) the sound will travel down that cable quite a distance. This is very handy if you're in the basement and the cable terminates in some back room on the third floor or visa-versa. However the tone will travel through lots of the wires in a tight bundle (ie:25 pair phone cable or auto wire harness) and you;ll have to do a lot of searching to find the exact pair you want to isolate. The tone does cross-talk to other wires in close proximity and adds an additional puzzle to figure out. I wouldn't be without a tone emitter in the telephony business but I know it's applications and limits. For a DIY automotive novice its just another tool to play with and divert you some from the frustration. At least for the time duration that you spend figuring out the new toy and then its back to the frustration but now with the additional frustration of having less money in your pocket. If you are in a mid-size to large city, The large electric supply houses stock these and can even let you play with it there. I always liked Graybar Electric. They are probably still around. Just a side note: Graybar was four hours behind Alexander Graham Bell in filing for the patent on telephones. Good Luck. Phil

ONLY. I mention this because you used the ground harness as a demo... and some guys (like myself, who learned this the hard way) may not realize that when you connect the toner to ground, it tones everywhere that is connected to ground. SOOoooo... It works great for tracing harness, as long as such is not connected to ground, on chassis ground systems. Love your vids... I've learned a lot from you. Keep it up! Big time saver when running all over the place when a circuit is 100s of feet in length (no need to run back to the transmitter to change to the other tone).

@@eisiebuddaie3551 The tone continues until the far end of the conductor it's connected to. The typical use is to find multiple points along a conductor without having to follow the entire length by hand, which is difficult or impossible when the conductor runs through walls or is part of a large bundle of wires. Since a short means that conductors that aren't supposed to be connected are you'd find the tone continuing through conductor(s) were you shouldn't have it. If you recognize that the path is no longer correct you can find the location of the short.
