My Grandfather was an industrial artist from Pennsylvania 1920s. Frank Smolen. Passed away 1966. My older siblngs have his paintings. He would frame his own. Thanks for sharing!

Oh my gosh Dr. Lori! If you were a few years younger or I was a few years older. Lol You give me heart moments when you are teaching and show how you love to pour knowledge, love, admiration and wisdom to collecting art. I started out with suits, oil and acrylic paintings are now my favorite collectible. I have a freaking MUSEUM size collection. I have paintings stacked 5 deep and greater lining the walls of a 10x20 climate control storage unit plus 30 or 40 at my house. Hi everyone, my name is Adam and I'm a fine arts hoarder. Lol I know I have 20 or 30 in that style alone. Lol That x 800 is significant!

The people in there that ran the antique store said to break up our depression glass 12 piece place setting... So we did.... They said that we would make more money doing so... All we got was chips on several pieces and a much smaller place setting. I wish that I had heard your video's back then! You're definitely a wealth of knowledge! Thank you! BTW, my boyfriend's sister taught a Pen State too.... Beautiful place... You have to love their cinnamon rolls!!

@@DrLoriV YES! OMG, they give you soooooo much! Their ice cream was delicious! We also bought their mustard for pretzels... And of course anything else that mustard is good on, and I bought my granddaughter a stuffed Nittany Lion (think it will ever be worth what the TY Beanies are worth? Hahaha) and a bat and a ball for my grandson and big basket full of mushrooms from the agricultural dept and we went to the area where they sell office equipment and bought stuff there too! What a great school! I bet that you had fun there! My boyfriend's sister has been retired from there for 30-40 years now, but she still enjoys visiting there. She lives in Julian now. Such a beautiful place! Thank you again for sharing your world of knowledge! I am so enjoying all of your videos and learning so much! I am sharing, sharing, sharing your videos with everyone! In fact, next time I go to the Antique store where we had a place and also when I go to the Antique store of some friends of ours, I am going to share your name and videos with them. Learned so much. Date of staples/nails.

There is a Donald Blagge Barton (1903-1990) and an Edward Barton (1926-2012). They had a very similar "Barton" signature and some overlap in style and subject matter. I wonder if they were father and son. Anyway, it seems a strange coincidence. I have a Donald Barton painting and at first thought the one analyzed here was too but it is as you say, done by Edward Barton. Very informative, I really like your videos.

By the way Dr. Lori, I have learned SO MUCH FROM YOU. I look at the back first to try and determine age and the stretcher type to see where it's from. I get giddy when I see nails as opposed to staples. I look at frames and see if they are all wood and look at the milling. I know the difference between impasto, realism, pallet knife, pointillism, etc. I have just ABSORBED the knowledge you share so freely. I just love your passion Dr. Lori and underneath that tough gal, something about you screams Long Island, Jersey girl...tough you know? That tough protects a beautiful ❤️. When I meet you and if you'd get your butt back to Atlanta for a PUBLIC show...lol...you are going to have to peel me off cause I am going to give you such a great big hug you are going to be like "ENOUGH! First I couldn't stop buying paintings when I had the money, then I was eating out too much, lately been between bills since Mom passed unexpected and these little penny phone games that's got like... $.99 and $2.99 and $5.99 and $9.99. You start out "Oh! Well, I can do $2.99. That's not a lot." But then you do that 4 or 5 times and then you venture into a $5.99.....ugh. The things are like CRACK. NO MORE THOUGH. Having you for a month could profit me so greatly. You are the best place to put my money after the propane, car insurance, etc. Lol

@@DrLoriV Awe, thank you. Like you, never married and no children and I lived with her up til they moved her to assisted living. I was her baby for 40 years. She was my baby for 5. :) Best friend on this Earth. She was ABSOLUTELY precious. The young lady at assisted living, where she had been prior to running out of money; when I went to tell them she'd passed; one of the little girls came up to me and was just out of the blue..."Can I hug you?" and then started waterworks. She said my mommy was her absolute favorite person in the whole place. :) I started collecting suits to resale after I learned about them after she bought me one. I was going to sell them to help keep her at home and out of assisted living. After I wasn't selling I discovered paintings appeal to a broader audience, originals are all ooak, and command a lot more money. So I started researching them and buying them and then found you. I can see my eye has been honed from when I started to now. :) My goal used to be to keep her at home or get her back home. But now she's HOME HOME and this little double wide could never compare with that. So, now my goal is to sell to make a life for myself and prepare financially for a wife and maybe children someday soon. I know I have at least a couple in the 10s of thousands. Probably 100 more between 100 and 10k. I also have a super old tribal artifact that could be worth an untold amount. I think I asked you about that a time or two. I think I got enough to buy a new car, buy a piece of land out right and build a house on it and pay my utilities for several years.

I recently bought a Barton painting for $19. Beautiful painting but I don't like the frame and it really doesn't do the painting any justice,, should I get it professionally reframed or would this decrease the value?

No, paintings and frames are evaluated individually. You may want to keep the frame. Keep all paperwork and marking that relate to the piece.

Dr. Lori. I have 5 Original i paintings by Brazilian Artist , Valter Morals. All billiards Art. ( Subject is pool . Like 8 ball ) I'm thinking of selling them as a collection. I gave apx. $500 each. 1993 & 1994 they were painted. You said to add value to a collection. How much value ? 10% or more , Most of his paintings go for $2500 a PC. So. 5 X 2500. I feel really uncomfortable haggling at a thrift or antique store. Estate sales and dealerships are the only places I negotiate. If it's out of budget, I just move on.

I had been taught that Mona Lisa didn't have eyebrows because the pigment flaked off. Was that a lie?! I'm questioning all my art knowledge now.

Just picked up 2 Shirley Newell paintings for $12 both. I cant pay $250 for an appraisal from you, (even though you are pure awesome at what you do) is there another place or resource you can recommend "we" who can not afford a highly skilled doctor such as yourself?

You can’t afford not to have me look at your stuff. Many of my events offer a free review paid for by the event’s host for you. Also I have options right now as of this post for as low as $49. Check out other options on my website.

Carlo Mancini know anything about him I found a large oil painting of hes at thrift store for 7.99..its a mountain scene..looked him up a little said he died in 1910..
