🩰 How to FILM in Ballet Class *WITHOUT EMBARRASSING YOURSELF* (& what to do instead if you can't)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Wondering how to film in a ballet class? Maybe you've seen people like Luna Montana or Eva Nys filming in their ballet classes and you've been wondering how YOU can film in your classes too. If you're wondering how to get better at ballet FAST, filming yourself in class will not only help you improve your technique, it'll help you practice performing, help you make friends as an adult and inspire other people along the way.
As an adult beginner ballerina documenting my journey of learning ballet in my 20s, I have a TON of tips to share with you.
So in this video you'll learn:
-why it's SO IMPORTANT to film your ballet progress, especially as an adult beginner ballet dancer
-why it's SO DIFFICULT to film in ballet (why does everyone shame you or tell you no?)
-the toxic mentalities that plague the ballet community
-how to film in a ballet class RESPECTFULLY (without embarrassing yourself or pissing anyone off)
-what to do instead if you can't film in ballet class (how you can still track your progress on camera in a ballet studio)
Whether you're a ballet dancer wanting to document your progress, a content creator hoping to share your journey, or anyone just helpful.

🍓 HI, I'M VERONICA VICCORA
Hi there! I'm Veronica, welcome to my beginner dance journey. When I was 17, I was told by a teacher that I would never be a ballerina. I let that thought control me for YEARS but now, in my late 20s, I moved to New York City and I'm finally starting ballet late. This is a space for me to document the ups and downs of learning how to do ballet in my 20s and show anyone that it's never too late to live your dreams.

I taught myself how to dance at 16, never took a formal class and somehow made it into the dance program in college and it was a blessing. I love seeing people just go after it even though they weren't in their splits at 3 years old. Dance is how I stay connected to my body and I'm so thankful, even though I am not a professional dancer. That was never the point, it was about chasing a dream

I'm so torn on this topic. On one hand I'm always looking for fellow adult beginners on youtube and love to see them dance. But personally if someone showed up to my ballet class with a camera I would be taken aback. Recording implies putting on a performance and it would mess with my confidence quite a bit. Making mistakes in class is totally different than having them on record. Even if that camera was not directed at me I would think about the possibility of being seen in the backround or in the mirror. That being said I totally get that someone might want to film their pirouettes or a tricky combination. But then again I love love love seeing dancers on my level represented on the internet... Tough one

Those are great points! Which I hope I addressed well enough throughout the video. There are definitely different schools of thought with it. That’s exactly why I’m trying to create a space for anyone who wants to film! not only does it make those of us who want to document and share our journeys feel more comfortable, it makes anyone who doesn’t feel more comfortable too since they don’t have to be involved if they don’t want to. ❤

I love that you made a video, not about how people should get over feeling embarrassed, and how we should shove that aside and be confident, but show-cased your experience and some alternatives. ❤

I think the main reason is because ballet class is a technique class--it's not performative like if you were doing a ballet choreo rehearsal. When you do jazz, contemporary, or other styles, you are doing choreography that is meant to be a performance. Even if ballet has a "combination" at the end, most people are really just working on technique and not in performance mode. It would be like filming yourself in a jazz class doing awkward leaps and difficult turns that you know you cannot do yet. And the ballet barre is like lifting weights or other technical workouts--it can look awkward. It's not meant to be watched as a performance. I can understand wanting to film yourself in order to improve, but I absolutely understand why others wouldn't want to be in the video (especially not knowing where it will be posted, and everything lives in the internet forever).

Hi Veronica! I want to say thank you for sharing your experience as a late bloomer ballet dancer. As you, I don't think that age should be a requirement for initiating a class at any form ❤ Your experience has been very inspiring for me bc I started dancing classical ballet at a very young age (3yo) and took the classes very seriously, in one hand I loved it so much, but it was very stressful too bc all the comparisons, the competition, the teachers exigencies... It took me to the point that at age 14 I injured myself, unfortunately I was too young to understand that time would heal and I would come back to dance and improve my dance even more But bc of all the pressure I thought that my dream to become a ballerina was over..... 9 years later I saw your video (the one telling your journey as a dancer) and it was a statement for me I decided, after almost 10years, come back to ballet Today, I live in a very small city and has only one studio that offers ballet classes, my colleagues are all 10 years younger than me, but also has more two girls at their 20s But I'm so excited to be back, I'm so much more happy and now I feel I can really appreciate dancing and moving without all the comparison, pressure and negativity. We all there to learn, improve and have fun! It's been an amazing experience to reconnect with my body, relearn to dance and all the good stuff I'm coming back slowly, listening to my body and I'm interested in recording my improvements So im coming her in order to get tips for recording with minors without getting in trouble, because is their privacy You are a inspiration for all of us Kisses from Brazil 🇧🇷

Find a different teacher. Some are OK with it- but those of us who are not aren’t going to change and you open yourself up to legal action (something this content creator doesn’t mention) if you do it without permission.
