    Hi, yes, for flashy moves this video is great. However for practical fighting the show-hold is useless. People should start learning the basics first by properly holding the Nunchaku. This is NOT in the middle or close to the rope. In a fight you want to use maximum striking distance.

    I find when I'm stressed, I do a few spins, transfer grips...I let my stress flow out of the striking end. I go slow but balanced and I know it sounds goofy, I feel the stress flow down and go flying off the striking end. I'm going to butcher this..... I want to learn the mon-raki ....the long weighted chain, the constant motion use of that weapon looked beautiful to me.

    @@kidmosey Shad from Shadiversity demonstrated why a stick was a better choice. He couldn't think of a worse weapon to use. Basically, a person who is highly trained can do some damage with them. But the same person could do a lot better with just about any other weapon.

  • @mistahanansi2264

    @mistahanansi2264

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TerryProthero His argument was still flawed. It’d be like saying a polearm is a better weapon than a sword, or that a sword is better than a dagger without mentioning the context. A polearm is a better weapon on a battle field, the sword is a sidearm, a backup weapon, like the nunchucks. Nunchucks are traditionally easier to carry with you than a large staff. While the chucks aren’t as good as a staff, they’re a hell of a lot easier to conceal carry with you. Spears are better than swords, yet swords were more popular due to the convenience of carry, and daggers were still used despite swords being better.

  • @TerryProthero

    @TerryProthero

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mistahanansi2264 Actually, Shad was pretty specific on all of those points. He started by giving the context of self defense rather than martial arts tournaments, etc. He also addressed the issue of concealment. He showed that in the form of a walking stick, a stick wouldn't need to be concealed. It could be hidden in plain sight and carried with you anywhere. Nunchucks, on the other hand, are illegal in many places and would likely be taken from you by authorities. He also addressed how hard each could hit, the level of skill required to use each weapon, and the likelihood of the user injuring himself with each weapon under different circumstances. I don't think you were paying attention during his videos to try to make the argument you just made.

  • @mistahanansi2264

    @mistahanansi2264

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TerryProthero The hiding in plain sight argument is so painfully funny xD the notion that someone would believe that no one else would suspect a cane to be capable of being used as a weapon is pretty sad. The only way a walking stick would be “hidden in plain sight” is if you faked a limp every time you were in public, and had it with you every time you were in public xD People aren’t so dumb that they’d think “Yeah, no way that’ll be used against me” Also, as far as America is concerned, nunchucks are only illegal in like... 2 states currently. And while sword canes are less likely to be expected, and are a generally better weapon than wooden or metal nunchucks, even they don’t get passed metal detectors. Though I did understand the logic behind your counter argument, it’s only flaw was it’s lack of realistic context.

    ....I just went out and made 2 sets of lightweight nunchakus out of 13" lengths of 1" dia. PVC water pipe, with end caps, and short lengths of 3/8" braided nylon rope tied between the handles (separated by about 4-1/2"). Now, I'll wrap them with some tennis racket "grip wrap tape", for comfort, and improved grip. They'll be great for beginning practice. Eventually, I'll order, or make, some better ones, out of wood. These, (the ones I just made), have to metal parts, and are quiet, (no noisy rattling chain), and are "disposable" (cheap!)! I think that these afford a great (for co-ordination, and timing), training tool!!!! Thanks Jake!!!!! w/Much respect, and Love!

    Nunchaku is an amazing weapon especially when you´ve got two. The really good thing about weapon-training in Kung Fu is, that the techniques you learn with one weapon you can easily transfer to ALL other weapons. That´s brilliant because it reduces the learning time and you become good and cool sooner.

I have a question - While I realize that "flashy" techniques are more suited for movies or demos than street situations, do you feel that a series of flashy spins and tricks prior to a confrontation could act as a kind of deterrent - similar to the racking of a shotgun slide?

    What a great vid, now I know some more to practice on my own. In my mid 20's, I learned how to swirl them over my hands that it looked cool and I ha d fun with it. Now that I'm 58, I'm made my own to get back into it for getting into shape and more. I don't what to hurt or intimadate, but having the skills, just in case is worthy of learning more moves you've shown me! Thanks!

    I never had formal training in weapons, but some friends helped me out and I learned on my own thru practice. I mean several times a day almost every single day. I would walk around the house wearing them on my neck. I did it partly out of boredom, often working with two, but my arm muscles became well toned and I lost weight, so despite negative remarks about this weapon, learning to use them provides real benefits.

    Very nice video to begin a student's journey, but I am a traditionalist when it comes to the martial aspects of weapons training. In other words, I think the Gung Fu history, spiritual and practical components should be explained to the beginner when creating a class to actually teach nunchuku, just like the other disciplines. If this is not done, eventually the tradition and spiritual aspects will be lost and the user's will have gaps in knowledge. Your class-mechanics for muscle memory is awesome!

    if you swing hard enough, it will flow, but will do some major damage to the opponent. If you don't swing hard enough, it'll come back and hit your hand. As for grip, none of that has ever bothered me, but ive never had blood on my chucks before lol and I've only ever used wooden chucks so

    When and if you for sure had to be applying some numchucks / nunchaku to a situation it would be all about instantaneous resolve . Nothing special is needed just down on or across the fingers knuckles or ankles / elbows and of course temple or jaw strike . Any two or even one of these would end a drastic situation against anyone reasonably fast . And also if you're a quick grapler you can restrain the limbs by controling from either the wrist or ankle .
