• How to Fight w/ Nunchu... - #Nunchaku #Nunchucks #MartialArts - The Nunchucks or Nunchaku are a 2 sectional staff and serve as the 2nd Kung Fu and Martial Arts weapon I teach to beginning students of the Chinese Martial Arts. Many of you DM me at my JakeMaceTaiChi Instagram page and want to show me your nunchaku and want me to watch you training with and using your nunchucks. I would say 99% of you are trying to be too fancy with your Nunchuck techniques and need to remember to keep your Martial Arts and Kung Fu weapons training powerful and practical. The nunchaku or nunchucks are a traditional weapon of both the Chinese Martial Arts and Japanese Martial Arts and must be practiced daily and respected. Here are a few techniques I'm training today. Jake, my trainer, my friend, my brother your drunken teaching helped me. A bully came to fight me, and me I want to stay away from any sort of fight, when he came I staggered like a drunkard I got my balance too. He couldn't even touch me. He was really tired and went like a mad man. Thanks Jake. Please make the next drunken lesson. And I wish to know how to fight safely, I'm scared if I accidentally hit my opponent's major nerve, it may kill him. I'm really empathetic, so I think what will he think of me, what his parents think of me etc. I'm glad that I can control my anger. Credit goes to your meditation video.

Actually your words are fine, you have to dig deeper into punctuation marks and write it as: "overrated" and use a comma and a full stop and a capital letter to make yourself understood. This way you are talking about a word, which is overrated. But thanks for correcting the grammatical errors, that I made.

Wonderful video. I am a 73 year old Vietnam Veteran. I was first introduced to the Nunchucks while stationed on Camp Pendleton Marine Base. The black belt that taught me how to use this weapon taught me the basic moves you are demonstrating in this video. When I got to Vietnam, I ordered a pair of Nunchucks from Black Belt magazine. When they arrived, I continued to practice what I was taught and added defensive moves. When I was assigned to a combat company, I took my nunchucks with me on patrol along with my other equipment just in case of any hand to hand combat. I was that confident. To your students I strongly advise them to follow your instructions it could save their lives. Ok sensei, keep up the good work! Semper Fi

I found out Three very surprising things about Nunchaku in the Past 44 years of Practicing with Nunchaku Daily 1.) Nunchaku Break very Easily even if they are Oak or Ebony 2.) Manufacturered Nunchaku are designed to Fail if you Fight with Them 3.) It's not so easy to hurt someone willing to Attack you if they Know that you have Nunchaku ....... The Nunchaku are designed to be a Hidden Weapon and the more you Swing them the less Effective that First Strike is going to be however Grappling with Nunchaku is highly effective if you have practiced Holds , Locks and Take Down Methods with Trained Instructors .... You need to understand that These are not Toys and attemting to Fight with Nunchaku that are not actually Designed for Fighting purposes then they will BREAK and you need to Hit things to understand the reactions that happen from the Strikes that you Pretend to Know Well and that FLASH and SPEED might just work Against the Unarmed Untrained Person that you might encounter that is willing to Fight but don't count on the Nunchaku working against the Trained Martial Arts Experts especially if you bought Manufacturered Nunchaku from China or Century Martial Arts they will BREAK

Arn'viir Hunkrahmaar What’s wrong with using them as entertainment for ourselves? Some of us like to use these “spinny toys” to also practice flow, technique& momentum. Some of us just like to enjoy and expose ourselves with a new hobby, tricks & enjoyment. Guess some parents didn’t teach others about common courtesy & being supportive.

I've been using this weapon for over 40 years. I had some professional training in the beginning. My teacher taught the best strikes were derived from katana slashes, treating the nunchaku as a two-sectioned sword. I make my own from PVC pipe which is filled to balance and weight, and I have a non-patented string anchor system, using a single braided nylon cord. I prefer single-strand over double-strand because a single cord is silent. If I EVER have to use this weapon, I want my assailant to never see or hear what hit them. That is the danger of this weapon - it is so easy to kill someone with a single strike. Thanks, Jake for this tutorial - very REAL and practical information.

Probably, but this one is still absolutely lethal.

So happy to watch a video that is so practical, stressing upon nunchuk use as more of a weapon than an entertainment tool. Hey! This is how I have been practising nunchuk so far!! And I was baffled by those amazing nunchuk skills like flipping, palm twisting etc..! Not that I will not be practising those, but to know I have been on the right track all along is a great morale booster indeed!

Never broke anything but did beat myself up with them. Wonder where tf they are at now. Had a bboy kid around my way who was nice with the flares and used to travel in 42nd st with his on him. Heard stories about him backing people down and off them as he was proficient as a blonde haired teenager.

When I was a young man I had to defend my home and wife with a homemade pare of chucks from shovel handles. On the first strike it splintered into splinters. I was left holding one stick with a string hanging out of it, and he was still in attack mode. I grabbed a camera with a flash on it, pop The flash in his eyes and gently smacked him with a claw hammer that was laying on a stove just inside the door. That indeed did stop him. Needless to say I've only used good quality hardwood chucks from that day on. Appreciate your instruction videos. I'm 68 now and still have a set that I love to work out with. Thank you, grateful.

Nunchucks with chain can also be used to create a nearly identical sound of a shotgun being racked. Put them together side by side, and slide one up to make the chain taught, then slide down to make it taught the other way. Now do it like you're racking a shotgun. Making that sound alone, while out of sight, may save you from someone armed with a gun.

@@timeshark8727 while range can be an issue, in having more power with a stick u giv up ur mobility (using big heavy swings. without big heavy swings nunchucks hav the same damage potential) if ur skilled with nunchucks u can pick ur opponent apart with the idea of death by 100 cuts, slowly picking away, a swing to the arm, a swing to the hand etc. then when u hav ur chance boom go for the head. in this hypothetical scenario we are assuming the nunchuck wielder knows how to use them very well and the stick dude is just ur average joe. and yes i agree a stick is a more effective weapon BUT, i said it depends on the skill i agree that a stick is better in general. i am not saying this is ideal but, it works. as for potential of hitting urself, if ur used to practicing with a bag with nunchucks, u know the way to have the chuck follow ur arm instead of snapping back is similar to a horizontal stall. u let ur arm follow the chuck and then upon impact, u let the chuck follow ur arm. not a hard thing to try but it does take some hours of practice on a bag. i would enjoy having this conversation farther! let me know what u think about my points and what flaws u see in them!

@@timeshark8727 i am going to use your format for replying so it easier to read lol. "Not even close to true" -Lol this is legit ur opinion. u need to give me evidence to change my mind. while u think of something to do that, I hav a question. Hav u ever used nunchucks? hav u ever hit something with nunchucks full force? there is significant power i cant lie. not as much as a stick but if u look back, i mentioned that without a full force swing from a stick, nunchucks hav the same damage potential. "Lol, only if they are a training dummy and don't try to fight back.. real people don't just stand there getting hit." -i think u accidentally misunderstood what i was getting at with death by 100 cuts. if u look back i said go for hands, arms etc. now why would i go for hands and arms? because even the average joe at least recognizes (and probably would implement) the basic principle of keeping your hands up while fighting. because they are keeping their hands up, we go for the hands. if they put their hands down we go for the head. if they back up, we can wait or rush in and attack. if they rush in then we try and get as many hits as possible before impact (or even disengage until u regain distance then reengage.) however, if u r effective at controlling range the likeliness for them to be able to rush in is low. also if they choose to do this, then thats also a negative against sticks because, they are also ineffective at very close range (and u can grab the stick, rendering it useless. try and grab a nunchuck that is being swung at u. very hard to do.) this is such basic yet effective principle (death by 100 cuts) that it can make people look like training bags. also, i never said that real people stand there getting hit. i agree, most people woundnt just stand there, unless they were injured etc. but most people would keep there hands up. "Attackers aren't bags, you cannot control their position or movement... your practice with a stationary target won't help you much." -If u look back u could see that i never said attackers are bags. i said that practicing WITH a bag helps u learn to control the potential kickback of the chuck, so if u ever do have to hit an attacker (whether stationary or not), ur prepared for the potential kickback and know how to prevent it. plus, when u train with a bag u can learn how much range u hav with the nuchucks, which can help when an attacker is coming at u. "there is no category where nunchucks are superior to simple sticks, except ease of concealment..." -and i would add speed aswell. also remember i dont disagree with u on this, i simply think that it is the skill of the wielder that has a factor in determining its effectiveness in a fight. "in which case, get a knife...or a hardware store hammer." -nunchucks range and speed are a pretty direct counter to melee weapons such as knives and a hammer. (look up some vids of nunchucks vs a knife, there is pretty universal agreement that nunchucks are better then knives.) again, pls keep this conversation going! i am loving this lol. hope ur day is going well and continues to do so.

My personal EDC weapons are a Sig Sauer P365XL, a 4" razor sharp folding knife & a Surefire Stiletto Pro 1000 lumen flashlight. Now to your question, I am confident that I could absolutely destroy an attacker with my 14" hard wood combat nunchucks if they were all that I had to work with. Keep up the great work Jake. I'm a big fan. Jeff

I love how Bruce Lee used the nunchucks in the movie Game of Death as well..it looked very realistic in an actual street fight in some scenes.

I don’t like to brag but I have followed bruce lee style since the early eighties self taught and I consider myself real good with the chunks, thus all my use of them is strikes, been in several incidents with them and always came thru unblemished although I didn’t know how to use them as I do now, only knew a few basic strikes like what is being shown on this video , but you always learning as you master them, this may be hard to understand but I do not swing them now as I did when first learning them it’s just like reaching out to your target, though with speed and power directly and of course striking with the tip and the force is like a bullet or missile, using both hands hitting objects directly and able to control recoil, I could go on and on but seeing is believing

Fancy tricks are useful but only as a one off situation. Very much needed but not on the strike possibly in the recoil but more in the pivots, and the set ups for off strikes.

He is a novice and has not yet wrapped his head around advanced Nunchaku. What he is showing will work for him and others and I applaud that. However he is missing a ton of situations that may need unusual technique or motions and the ability to not hurt yourself when those times arise. IMHO.

This is so interesting. I watched this video and I was very surprised to discover that that I've been doing it correctly for many years. No real training, just tried it as a kid after watching some videos. I guess it came naturally to me. I have two pairs of Nunchakus, one like the brown wood pair in the video. I did hit myself on the head few times and put some bruises on my legs, but that was early on when I was just starting. Right now I can do this quite easily, pretty fast and on both sides, and I can even do that wrist flip Jake did at the beginning of the video. It's fun and and a good exercise. Good video.

There are moves we pick up over the years that have no practical usage outside of it looking cool or to see if your buddy can do it. Should you happen find yourself in a fight and your sticks are handy you most likely wouldn't use these moves like the sack squisher or off the bottom of foot etc, If in a combat situation you choose to spin behind your neck and catch arms crossed, obstructing your vision, that most likely is when you wake up wondering what happened, where are you, and where did your chucks disappear to.

Two points people have no clue about. A) a cord connecting two sticks is a noonchawk and not a pair since it is one and B) if you have two of A then you have two noonchawk and NEVER two noonchawks since Okinawan has no plurals (the same with Japanese, Korean, and Chinese)
