    As soon as I watch this vid I remember Firas Zahabi (the trainer of GSP, UFC Champion). He demonstrated how to figut a bigger or taller guy and he said the same thing as you said. Don't stay inside the pocket, move in and out, make a curcular motion, don't clinch or try to shoot your opponent you can't because he has more weight than you, make him chase the more he chases you the better, use some tricks and jabs to taunt him. And he said "to fight a bigger guy you don't need to change your game you just change your tactic and have a better game plan"

    The element of surprise can be crucial when fighting someone who's bigger (and hopefully not stronger). They'd think they can play their own game with long punches and jabs, until suddenly you jump forward to land a knockout punch.

    I'm 6'8" (just over 2m) and have an occupation in which physical engagements are the norm. I don't know if this video was for sporting reasons or non sport reasons. At least in the non sport context, this is a great video to teach distance but not a great video to teach how to fight. I 100% agree that if someone has both the speed and fight IQ over my power than I am definitely at a disadvantage - I have lot plenty and know my size alone will not win any fight. As much as you are right that being smaller usually means your faster, I think you overlooked how much better being bigger makes you at grappling. This means that while stepping inside of a taller opponents strike zone significantly reduces the power they can generate on a forward strike it also increases the danger of a grab or hold. Also remember the shorter opponent has shorter limbs, something not simulated simply by crouching down. Your video suggests crossing in and out of the strike zone should be frequent. I would argue it should be minimized. Each pass through there could be a game ending punch. In a non sport context I would say the shorter opponent should- 1) Only step inside the opponents reach if absolutely neccesary. Look to not engage at all if possible 2) If you do have to get inside, do it fast. Everything needs to be shock and awe. A jab isn't worth giving up your advantage. If you're coming inside you need to explode and stun. 3) Create as much pain as possible and get out of reach - see 1 - before they can recover

    A nice concept to use everywhere, the disadvantaged attacks second. If you feel like you are overmatched, reacting to an attack and counterattacking is a good choice. Not only in a fight, but games too. Chess is a good example to try that in. Set up a good counterattack from the start, and you can possibly get back some advantage.

    Since ive been compared with the main character from shadow of the colosus because ive always got in fights with guys waaaaaay bigger than me(not always won tho) in my experience, what works for me is goong under their punches to get close and then try to circle arround them and chamge directions when he tries to follow me, and also, try to attack the weak points... The liver, the nuts, etc... Kidneys are a favorite for me... Also, if you manage to do a throw, since they are big, it hurts them more than any strike you could do...

    I'm short and most of my sparring partner for Judo are about 173 cm to 182 cm tall and they weight twice as much as me. I use tactics as well like you mention on your video. The go to move that I use on bigger guys are ouchi gari, kouchi gari and ashi harai which pretty much help me when I spar. Tai sabaki and Kuzushi played an important role in my training.

    It's going to help me a lot! Thanks Jesse-san! If you remember correctly the concept of ma ai came from kendo and allowed fighters to better their methods of fighting. Not that old school karate didn't have it, Motobu Choki gave a huge discourse on this topic long before. Can you also make a video on fighting stances? For an Indian, I'm pretty tall and well built and I've a tendency to lean towards goju-ryu techniques, but I know shotokan as well. What do you suggest?

    Great video! I'm not sure that the rope is necessary, but learning the right distance to be from your opponent certainly is. The taller person never likes to be closed down as they know they can be at a disadvantage then. The other thing that is difficult to cope with as a taller fighter is a short and very flexible adversary. It is difficult to see kicks coming in from very short range as they are outside the normal range of vision.

    I learnt this in kickboxing you block the punch with your outside hand which is the left hand and immediately move in a half circle towards his left side which is your right side as soon as your back foot touches the ground throw a punch straight across his face it’ll go though his guard and if caught unaware it’s a knockout punch

    Gladly! Take the center of the ring/cage/mat and use the leg kicks to get that respect early and keep your opponent where you want them. Use sidekicks to push your opponent back against the boundary.Then I use quick combos use my speed to slip my opponent and use my punches to their full extension Im 5'4 but I have pretty long arms. Its meant as a sparring/fight in a controlled environment. Sorry if I made it unclear.

    I don't really use kicks a lot except the mae geri, all my other kicks are a bit slow and hence risk a chance of being caught. But yes, I see that to be a very efficient tactic! Do you recommend an ashi barai at this distance? I personally fake with a jab, spring with a gyaku-tsuki to the chest, and if that doesn't hit, I use the advantage of the angle to go SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY!

  • @phillipmoore9012
    @phillipmoore90123 жыл бұрын

    I hadn't seen this one before. The idea was exactly correct for me, the smaller guy. I thought of it as 'stop hit'. The first, inching forward until your opponent feels compelled to attack-- stop hit (forward). The second, retreat, but still drawing an attack, but only just far enough to counter (forward). Both require greater speed. The second requires excellent 'blocking'. Move back too far and you're just back to square one with the big guy.

    That's pretty interesting sensei. As a small guy (5'4) it is a good activity to master for me.

    Thank you a lot for the concept, Jesse-san! I'm surprised our sensei did not teach us ma-ai already. Also, I have a question. Is there a way to perform an ashi barai against a opponent when the distance would be a very critical factor? But thanks for the video anyway! (Hope Oliver didn't kill you, or did he?)

    this is why in shuri-te karate, they use bladed stance and have a very low stance. shuri-te was made to fight a bigger opponent. well yes, your opponent can stomp or kick your leg in that way. but if you want to see how you should use a bladed stance, see stephen thompson
