How To Feed Your Gut

There are so many angles we need to look at with gut health and they can tell us an amazing amount of information about the rest of the body. Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman explores the role of the gut microbiome and how best to feed it with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center. Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. George Papanicolaou, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham.
Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s goal is to help patients achieve vitality through focusing on optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.
Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health-a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in August 2017.
Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their wellness goals. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well, a topic she is passionate about as a breast cancer survivor.

What is so grossly unfair is that most of us since birth don't know about these things. So we have been at the mercy of regular mainstream doctors who pump us full of antibiotics all of our lives and when I was pregnant and gave birth 1985 my ob/gyn never talked about nutrition. I was only 17 yrs old so my diet was less than ideal but I was NEVER told by my doctor or the adults around me that what I ate was most important. The doctor also causally told me breast feeding wasn't important threw some similac at me. I was born in 1967 so I grew up in the 70s. I took antibiotics every year of my life all the way into the late 90s. We are taught to trust the medical community and now our bodies are paying a steep price. What do people like me do to correct 50 plus years of damage done to us by the medical community? It feels like a scam. We spend thousands of dollars for 50 yrs to get poisoned by medical professionals and now we spend our retirement money on this "new stuff" to try to repair everything. I feel like I have been scammed.

Most people did the best they knew how and that is the same for doctors. Now it is up to you to take care of you. Do you research and try one thing or a few things at a time. Find a good prebiotic. Magnesium and B vitamins. I am in my 50's and have and continue to work on keeping myself healthy. You CAN do it and being here listening to this information is a start.

@@lynny5510 You can fix yourself. Trust me. I am 54 and was told I had early stages of RA. I have really changed my diet and I keep myself moving. I supplement and did a dna test to confirm some issues. Not everything I have is covered by medical but I paid for it anyways. May I ask what specifically you are dealing with?

Excellent compilation of valuable information from recent interviews. I encourage all to see the full interviews. This is the future of health restoration as it was in our past. What we got in recent decades from greedy corporations and the psychopathic pharmaceutical industry has been a nightmare. Deception, manipulation, and brainwashing as well as maiming and killing. Thanks brother Mark for all you do. You are making a huge difference in the lives of so many. Peace and blessings

Why are Functional doctors so expensive and not covered by insurance. This is the main injustice to our society. They should be affordable yo all. But thanks to universities and big pharma this is an impossible dream. Let’s change that.

Insurance industry is regulated and so is the medical industry. They are not very open to change and will resist at all costs. And then there is the fact that it is also part of politics. Look at the recent pandemic response by many governments they had done good things but they also have done horribly bad things.

The medical industry is really good at dealing with acute medical problems and is focused at addressing the symptoms. So if a person breaks their leg or has a heart attack the industry is really good at solving that problem and it does it in miraculous time frames. It is just not good at dealing with underlying conditions or lifestyle.

This and other videos are very informative but along research lines loaded with big words. Seems to me that if you are advertising "foods to eat" you should have some detailed recommendations. Doc mentioned "a cocktail" he made up - good - but why not give a link to this type of data? This should not be a round table discussion in a university class but should include a bigger dose of application.

You might want to consider getting tested thru thryveinside.com they do a microbiome analysis and will recommend foods that promote the bacteria you need and the foods that by avoiding will help balance your gut too. For exactly, I was eating tons of squash but found out they are full of the good bacteria that I already have too much of. They also can give you antibiotics that are specific to your gut. I feel so much better following their protocol. I can retest in 6-12 months to see my improvement.
