The resister safely drains the remaining power in the system in this case the ECU which will remove the permanent fault code from the ECU memory. Not all code readers can delete what are called permanent codes stored in the ECU, it takes a dealer scan tool or the more expansive scan tools. These inexpensive scan tools can remove most stored codes unless it is a permanent fault code, the word permanent is kind of misleading because permanent fault codes can be deleted it just takes a dealer scan tool or one of the expensive scan tools to delete them, the 10 watt 1 Ohm resister will drain the power in the ECU which erases the permanent fault code, that eliminates you having to pay the dealer for their one hour minimum to hook up their scan tool to erase the permanent fault which takes them all of 5 minutes to do from start to finish. Most people do not own an expensive scan tool themselves that is capable of erasing permanent fault codes. So if you make a repair and correct a problem you can remove the normal fault code from the ECU with an inexpensive scan tool but if the system also stored the fault code as a permanent fault code you can't remove that one, it will remain in the memory and every time you scan the ECU for codes that permanent fault will keep showing up even through you repaired the issue.

​@johnperez735 The purpose of the resistor is to safely drain the remaining power from the ECM. If you just hold the negative to the positive for 15 minutes without the resistor, you could easily damage the ECM.

@@queshalakes1589 it seemed very simple unhook both cables do not use your car battery basiclly 2 jumper cables or wire hook one end to the positive cable the other to the resister then hook the other jumper cable to negative battery cable then to the other side of ther resistor the reaon is to slowmy drain everything without the capaciters on your vehicle burning up your ecm if anything would burn up it would be the resister its to protect your cars ecm

Dose this work on a diesel with 2 batteries?

you would need to disconnect both batteries, depending on the year and manufacture how they store the permanent codes this may work and it may not work. If they are storing the code by writing to memory then you will have to use a computer to erase it, if it is stored in flash memory that requires power they it should erase the code. Like anything else some manufactures make it as hard as possible to erase these codes. One other thing is the problem has to be corrected before erasing the code or the code will still show up.

Can't you also disconnect both battery cable and press the horn for like a minute?

The resister allows the power to be drained safely, todays vehicles have a lot of delicate electronics in them so directly shorting out the positive and negative cables is not a good idea.

@@righteousone1 Yes, Positive cable to one side of the resister and Negative cable to the opposite side of the resister, that will safely drain the remaining power in the ECU and erase permanent stored codes that other wise need the dealer computer or an expensive scan tool to remove them.

What year vehicle did you do this on?

This will work on all vehicles with an ECU that stores a code. Scotty Kilmer's channel also explains how to use this method to erase a permanent code if you don't have an expensive scanner or don't want to pay the dealer to erase the code.

@@mustangecoboosthpp3869 - OK fist stop listening to Scotty Kilmer, guys an idiot. Permanent codes are a new thing in 2010 and newer vehicles. But to complicate things some scanner manufactures listed some history codes in thier scanners as "Permanent" when in reality they were just a history code. So you gotta be really careful offer advise to people in this area. Shorting out a vehicles electrical system is not advised by any manufacturer. There is really no reason to clear a permanent code in a 2010 and newer vehicle. They are not hurting anything being in there. If your check engine light is off and all you have is a permanent code there is nothing more to fix on the car.

I don't up load videos to KZread anymore because they have throttled my account to the point just answering this post takes a long time. All you do is disconnect both battery cables from your car battery. Now have your resister and your alligator clips with you. Connect one of the alligator clips to the positive battery cable, not the battery but the removed cable, connect the other end of the alligator clip to one side of the resister, repeat this with the negative battery cable. The resister will safely drain the remaining power in the ECU unit erasing any permanent codes that were stored in the ECU memory. You will leave the resister connected to the battery cables for 10 to 15 minutes. Once that time has passed disconnect the resister and the alligator clips from the battery cables and reconnect the battery cables to the car battery and you are done. The permanent codes will have been erased.

you probably just had a code ,not a permanant code, permanant codes stay there until the computer recocnises the problem is resolved when it feels the problem is resolved a permanant code will clear itself, sometimes they just dont want to go away, i drove 25 cycles 600 miles still a permanant code with no engine lights on a 2016 ford f150 ecoboost, ive about had it nothing wrong with the truck but its whole life the guy was driving it up massive hills ,it finnaly set a permanant code ,i bought it live in flat land area the computer will not reconize its fixed becouse i drive differently, this may be my only option,dealer will screw me

Better yet, Like Scotty Kilmer said, take both pos an neg battery terminals off the battery an touch then together for 30 seconds or so peave thwm off connect them an boom. ALL check engine lights gone. For now.
