Diy Computer and Module Reset Resistor

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to build a resistor that is used to reset modules in a vehicle. To use this you disconnect the battery and you connect this to the battery cables. You have to let this sit connected for 15min. Vehicles need to see 15mins of network silence to revert to their default programming. This may fix any strange anomalies or logic issues in a module.

Rob you produce some of the best videos I’ve watched. Coming from the aviation world it’s not overkill it’s attention to detail. Taking a short cut now will bite you later. I will also make that setup today. Everyone I’ve watched said short the cables together but never mention the 15min waiting period. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and techniques with me. Much appreciated 😊

It's not needed for every vehicle but it can save you from damaging something.

Nice tool, lots of people still take the terminals of and touch them together for a ‘battery reset’. Really bad practice and damages modules

Could you use a 12v led load resistor? Its 2v more from 10w. To rest a computer on a 2004 bmw x3 2.5i?

Nice work I usually disconnect both leads and join then together . Drains the capacitors in the modules

You really don't want to that. You can damage modules on the car.

I have a chip in my key. It won't wipe the memory of the cluster, will it? I will be able to start my car. When this is done right?

It goes on the battery cables. You have to have the cables disconnected from battery. Do not connect it to the battery cables while they are connected to the battery otherwise it will short the resistor out.

This is a great tip as I am trying to get my car to pass emissions. My question is if I reset the computer and erase the stored codes will the OBD2 reader show it is not ready for the emissions test?? Would you have to do a drive cycle of 30 to 50 miles? Then would they re-appear??

  • @RobertDotterer

They would show as incomplete and you would have to perform a drive cycle. There is no miles number to be driven and a driving pattern you have to follow for each monitor. Reseting the ecu will reset all adaptations and learned values so it may make false codes apear because the ecu learns sensors over time so if they are slightly skewed or slower than a new sensor the ecu adapts to them. It's called EWMA, Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA). It's calculated over 10 drive cycles and ecus have been doing this since 1996.
