Joining BookTube has enhanced my reading experience SO much but at the same time there's that added pressure of "quickly read that next book, you need to make a new video" so it's a bit of a double edged sword! This community is the best and I have to agree that reading outside or inside with a candle is just about as good as it gets.

Get a ebook reader, its not for everyone, but the ability it change how easy text is to read in lower light is a great feature. Not lifting around some 1500 page hardcover is another great thing. Find someone to talk to about a book, just watch out for the internets spoilers. Its OK to not like something, even if everyone you know loves it, we are all different its ok, read a different book, no complaining about the book you didn't like unless you finish it tho. Yes to audio books, best for second reads myself. Its ok to love bad books.

Greg Hearn I think you can complain about a book you didn’t like even though you didn’t finish it. Its ridiculous to suggest you can’t dislike, and have a discussion around why you didn’t like, a book unless you finish it. Who has time to read a book you hate?

@@KristianaCembre as long as you state you dnf, it may have a twist or something you missed, I didn't mean it to read that way, as I said its fine to not like stuff, but if you didn't finish it your not rating the finished work and that's worth noting, and its aimed more at those that leave comments on books on say amazon or something where they rate one star and only read the back cover :)

A tip I'd add is after reading a book, take a few days to let it settle. I'm a slower paced reader on purpose because I like to savor each part of the book, and after reading something I take a day or two off of reading all together just to let the plot and characters wash over me. My brain thinks about all the awesome bits, sad bits, etc etc and I just find it lets me appreciate the read more, and also lets me go into another book with a clearer head because I've processed all of my feelings about my previous read and can fully enjoy it, and my next read that way.

I enjoy reading more by listening to audiobooks along with reading the text. Also I agree getting into a community makes things more fun as well cause u getta geek out with everyone

Audio books with great narrators! Don't be afraid to put a book down and come back to it later. And buddy reading!!!

I'm visually impaired, and when I got an e-reader, it changed my life. I could read without eye strain, light issues, etc. Plus, sometimes heavy books would literally make my wrist sore. I'm a wimp haha. Point is, I didn't realize that I wasn't reading as much or enjoying it because it was physically more challenging, but I'd just gotten used to it and didn't realize how much I was struggling.

I love how a lot of your tips are about connecting in some form or other with other people over books. Also, you’re absolutely right about how reviewing a book helps you to remember and understand it so much better. It’s a lot like teaching: The best way to learn something is to teach it.

Fantastic Friends reference lol. I struggle with both reading audiobooks as well as DNFing. And you're spot on about the explaining it to someone else helps you remember things. I remember most of my history things by having taught it to my class.

ugh, Elliot, you're such a JOY to watch. i loved the video, especially the tip about accepting your reading speed. i've been struggling with that because i keep comparing myself to others, even though it's just silly. and the dnfing thing... i know someday i'll be able to manage it lol.

I read romance and that means I read 30ish books a month. If I were reading all fantasy, my “book count” would be cut at least in half. I just read what I enjoy, but that does translate to a pretty high book count for me personally. But it doesn’t really matter. I also dnf consistently. It makes my reading so much more enjoyable. ♥️🍂

A month late but I had to say hello. I love that FMA is on your shelf and your advice has helped me realize the problem I have had previously with booktube. The feel of competition and having to finish books one hates. Hearing someone else say neither is important helped me get back into reading for fun again. Thank you.

Audiobooks helped me read a lot more and help me get excited about doing menial tasks like doing dishes, eating lunch, walking to class, or going to work (just mow lawns at my uni lol). I personally am pretty good at focusing on listening... I have very sensitive hearing and have always been an "auditory" person

Every tip is great, I use multiple of them in my reading routine. New one for me is listening to audio books and I must say, it is awesome!

Whenever I read a book I read to get the most information out of a book by searching popular cultural references mentioned in the book I don't know anything about like - movies, T.V. shows (synopsis and trailers), songs, other books, famous personalities of a particular field, vehicles, real life locations, flora and fauna, historic event, etc.This helps me to deeply connect with the book. I only like silence when reading a book, no background scores / music.

Setting is very important for me. When the weather allows it I love to be outside in my hammock or somewhere peaceful in the woods or waterfront. When indoors a big comfy couch and the fireplace really elevate the experience. Of course cozy clothes aid every situation:)

Just wanted to add, for people who are having trouble immersing themselves in a book or reading for longer stretches of time, it might be worth getting an eye exam! Reading got difficult for me for a while and I thought I didn't enjoy it anymore, but it's just that I needed reading glasses.

Talking about it with people (or at least seeing what they think about books) is why I watch these book tube videos. Books are my primary form of entertainment and the consequences of that is no one to talk to about it. Very few people I actually know read the same things I do, or read very much at all for fun for that matter. So, I found you booktubers and I follow three or four of your channels. Yours is probably my favorite channel because you have similar tastes to mine and you're entertaining as well. I also liked your book and am interested that you play music. I read fairly fast as I'm a life long reader but I keep it at an absorbing pace. I'm able to read so much because of Amazon and their kindle/audible combo. I feel that that's the best thing that's ever happened to my entertainment life. I work in aerospace on the electronics side but I also play music for fun. So, I'm no stranger to solitary activities. This and Goodreads are cool to have around to not feel so isolated. 😁

My daughter has decided she wanted to start reading some of my books. It’s been fun to discuss them with her. We are going through this one authors catalog and having a blast!

I’ve been really enjoying buddy reading - I love being able to gush/hate on books with other people. Plus it’s a great way to get to books that have been sat on my shelves for too long

I like finding music that fits with the tone of the book I'm reading. There are a ton of playlists out there that people make specifically for this reason, so if you search for something like "fantasy, instrumental, reading", you'll find a bunch of playlists that will feature fantasy-style music. Or, searching for something like "dystopian" if you're reading that type of book, will usually get you playlists with more futuristic and fast-paced music. I find it adds so much to a book to tailor the music this way, instead of just listening to a general instrumental playlist.

Wow when u said accept your reading speed u spoke to my heart lol I'm a very slow reader and I have always been and still am jelous of people who can read fast, especially the people who can read books of like 500 plus pages in one day (cuz those people exist and unfortunately I'm not one of them😭). To be honest, being a slow reader and not accepting that fact has been the biggest detriment to my reading life. I have stayed away from wonderful big books that I'm interested in so often because I know that it will take me forever (months) to finish them if I start them. The issue that I have come up with before is that many times I'll start a big book and because it's taking so long for me to finish it I end up dnfing it because I'm tired about not being able to move on to another book.(I'm not one of those readers who can be in the process of reading multiple books at a time) Idk if I'm the only one, but even when I'm loving a book, if I'm taking way too long to finish it I start to loose interest and yearn to start another book. I've used audiobooks to help and they r my favorite. I listen at 2x which is faster than I can read physically so it helps. But for example I look at a tome of a book like Pillars of the Earth on my bookshelf and I'm like yeah that's never going to happen. That'll take months for me to finish and like I said if it takes that long I'll end up wanting to dnf the book no matter how good it is because I'll want to read another book. FML 😭 If I could have one reading wish, it would be to read fast! 😭 Watching all my favorite booktubers rereading the Stormlight Archives recently while also reading and completing other books like no big deal makes me so sad that that could never be me (but I'm happy for those of u who have that ability to read fast and this r able to consume books regardless of page count with no issue or difficulties.)

Finally letting myself DNF a book was one of the best things I did. So freeing. I used to think I wouldn't like audiobooks, but then I was “forced” (I was impatient and didn't want to wait for the regular book to be available for me to borrow) to listen to one. Needless to say, I like them a lot better now. It helps that that book is now like my favorite book. Now I prefer the audiobook sometimes. A really dense hard to read book is way easier for me to get through if it's an audiobook.

I am such a mood reader and before I really recognized that, I'd spend so much longer on books I wasn't in the mood to read but was forcing myself through. I've since learned it's okay to put a book down and come back to it later. I just returned a digital library loan if The Library at Mount Char because I found I wasn't in the mood for it and someone else had requested it. I'll request it again later, as I do still want to read it, but right now I have so many other books I really want to read during this spooky book season and I think this book is going to be a slower read for me. I enjoy books so much more when I read them according to my mood.

That's totally fair and I wish I could be like that but for me I have a pretty spotty memory. Details, names etc. tend to fade very quickly after I finish reading something leaving only feeling and sensory memories. And when I say "finish reading" I mean literally page by page, scene by scene so if I spend more than a week at maximum reading something I'll struggle to remember what happened earlier in the book. I can generally manage 3-4 days but even then I'll sometimes lose earlier parts depending on how good my concentration is and what other stuff is going on in my life. Probably relates to why I don't read a lot of series or super chonky books... though that is also just that I love a tight edit 😂😅

i thought i was the only one, it took me at least 2 month to read Jane Eyre but just because I liked it so much the closer I was getting to the end the slower i was reading it it just felt like a good serie you don't want to end

Even when it’s a book I like, the feeling that I “have to” finish it makes it hard to pick it up

For so long I just let people saying "read audiobooks!" just flow right off me and never bothered with them. I finally started listening to audios when I had a long train commute to a job in the city and it was a GAME CHANGER. Music is great, but having a story to listen to while I was commuting was game changing. Now I smash a tonne of audiobooks and I love them. It's hard not to compare yourself to others' reading goals, especially when we're making video content. That kinda relies on reading! But I learned to compete against myself and also to just enjoy it. We read as a HOBBY. Seems kinda mental that I have to remind myself of that at times. :P I am DNF queen; it's so freeing. I hope you can embrace that too!!

Always considered myself to be non-fiction, specifically autobiographical adventure such as ranulph fiennes Heat or Cold. Very good reads. But I'm a very slow reader and get distracted easily. The only book that's ever truly kept me captivated is 1984

I can't do fiction in audiobooks, but I really enjoy them for memoirs. Feels more personal somehow.

I think in terms of book clubs as well there’s also a TON of them online like on meetup and things like that!! There’s virtual ones right now especially bc of COVID!!! So this is a good time to meet other people who love reading without feeling pressured to leave your house.

OMG it’s funny you bring up adaptations because I’ve been wanting to read classics SO MUCH like Austen and stuff but I’ve been like AHHH how do I get into this?! and i recently saw someone discuss starting with the movies first and I know the witcher adaptation got me SUPER interested in the actual books 😭

I used to panic about not reading 20 books a month because that’s how my reading was when i first joined booktube but this year there’s been slow pockets and i’d be so upset about reading like 5 books a month but it was legit 5x more than I’d been reading in 2018, before i joined booktube. So now I’m like even 3 books is magical to me

I struggle so much with DNFing books, especially if I've paid money to own/have access to the book. Because then, if I don't finish it, I feel guilty for having wasted money. I know some services provider exchanges and refunds but more and more they're putting secret caps on doing this so that your account gets suspended if they feel you've abused the system. So I'm too scared to make use of that.

Speaking of dnfs you said you dnfed the devouring gray and I read it right after and even though I really didn’t like it I pushed through and now I kinda regret it cause in my opinion it didn’t get better at all 😂

I like to work out to that music. I find it too intense for reading. Might pair well with Malazan though. Also check out ES Posthumous if you like that kind of stuff.

Considering how many 1-3 star books Ive read this year and how many reading slumps ive been in, its kind of ridiculous Ive only DNF'd 1 this year! I NEED to get better at DNFing. It just isnt worth it and there just isn't time. I would be enjoying reading so much more if I learned to cut my losses haha

My problem isn't that I don't enjoy reading, but being an accountant, I am busy 4-6 months of the year and so I am so exhausted by the end of the day to read. But for my off months, I read a lot.

I feel that need to DNF/leave The Odyssey, I feel guilty every time I try jumping back in to finish it and just want to put it down. Its not a bad tale and theres lots to enjoy but I mean honestly how many times do we need to hear about backstories that do not matter, by Zeus just move the plot along D: I might try it with an audiobook alongside it, considering that was its original format it might go much more enjoyably.

I'm so stubborn about finishing books...sometimes I'm happy I pushed myself through a DNF because the ending was worth it and other times I wonder why I tortured myself.

Honestly those booktubers are often just lying. I’ve thought about it so many times. They either have already read the book in the past and pretend to be reading it now or they just looked up its summary online😂 it annoys me very much, how are you reading 15 book a month? How are some claiming they read 6 a day? Even if you have no life whatsoever, you wouldn’t receive any information from that fast reading. You’re basically not enjoying reading anymore because a good book takes time.

How do you know they're "often" lying? What's your inside scoop? Because just not believing that someone can read 15 books in a month is not a particularly solid argument.😂 I think of myself as a pretty slow reader, most novels I read 50-60 pages/hour, some even less depending on the typesetting. But even if I only have time to read for 2 hours a day that's an easily 10 novels a month, throw in some graphic novels and novellas and it doesn't seem impossible to read 15 books a month at all? Plus lots of folks will also have an audiobook on the go while the deal with the detritus of mindless everyday tasks that busy your eyes and/or hands but not your brain - those minutes add up. I don't think it's fair to say that people aren't reading or aren't enjoying reading if they read differently than you do. There's just no one-size-fits-all when it comes to how people process information🤷‍♀️
