Beautiful, Ceilidh! Your daughters are such cute little angels. 🥰 Thanks so much for sharing all your passion and knowledge and experiments with us. It's so precious and a great help and source of inspiration! I haven't done any bundle dyeing or eco printing at all so far, but a lot of scouring and mordanting for it and I can't wait to get started so-so soon. I agree with you, bundle dyeing must be more creative and wild and intuitive but I think eco-printing can also be a nice way of portraiting a beloved plant or flower and tree sometimes. Billy's right, the marks are pretty and her piece looks like a bundle dyed eco print. So cool! 💚

Hi BillyNou, i've heard you speaking about using alum and now I read a passage about it in a book about natural dying by Rebecca Desnos, and I just wanted to share it with you, who knows it can be of help to you. Thanks for all your video's, I am learning a lot :) Why I don’t use alum Alum is a popular mordant and is widely known as the ‘least toxic’ metallic salt mordant. However, it must be noted that aluminium is in fact a toxin to the human body. When handling alum, a dust mask is advisable and care should be taken to not inhale the acidic vapours from the dye pot. Without a doubt there are potential health risks from working with alum. I find the soya milk mordanting method produces better results in terms of colour fastness, so I feel no need to use alum again.

I really loved your video. Questions please….how did you prepare your fabric before this video? Do you soak it or mist it with vinegar? How long did you steam your pieces? Do you set the colors with something after removing the flowers so you can wash and use the piece? Gentle in the washing machine after this process? Thank you! I will be watching for more eco-printing and dying.

@@billynou Okay. Alum mordant. I've heard that metallic salts like alum are harmful to inhale while steaming. Do you know anything about that? So you don't wash your finished items in a washing machine after wearing the item? You hand wash in cool water with ph neutral soap to clean after using the item? Thank you so much. I love your channel.

hello I start by telling you that you, your family, your house and the splendid garden are beautiful. sorry, I have some questions if you can answer me, thanks. 1) can I also use cotton as fabrics? what thickness? 2) after buying the fabric, do I wash it without soap and let it dry? 3) all flowers and leaves color? 4) when I arrange the flowers and close with plastic, what does the water contain for boiling in a bain-marie? 5) how long? 6) do you use something to fix the color, like vinegar, lemon or nothing? Thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hey, loved the process. How long will it stay on the fabric, how many washes? Also, do fresh flowers or the dry ones have more life on the fabric?
@billynou
10 ай бұрын
This is a tricky question to answer as there are so many variables… but I usually have great colour durability washing gently with cool water …. And as for the flowers … some work just as well fresh and dry and others not so well … dye flowers are usually good both dry and fresh 🍃🌸🌼
Hey prints are really nice. May i know how you get that print on you pants? So beautiful 💚

hello , i loved the video. what a lovely technique but i had an inquiry if the print would be permanent or not
@billynou
Жыл бұрын
Hello… that’s a very common question… there’s lots of factors involved in how fast a colour or print is like, fabric, dye stuff, fixer used, how you care for the fabric etc etc but in general if you follow the right pretreatment and post care steps the colours can be incredibly long lasting 😊
thanks @BillyNou for the lovely video- do you scoure and mordant the fabric before?

LOOOVE this video!! Any chance you'd be willing to share what kind of fabric you used? would linen or canvas material work.. maybe cheesecloth? 🥰 ALSO.. are there only specific types of flowers that will print or will pretty much all flowers and leaves imprint on the fabric? 💐

I’m using silk here and you can use any natural fiber with the proper pre treatment fixative. There are definitely flowers that work better than other ones like cosmos for example…. Experimenting is key 🔑
Its lovely. Did you not use any mordant before eco-printing?
@billynou

Yep I used alum
Can you do the same technique on other fabric than silk?
@billynou
Жыл бұрын
Yes you can. You can do it on any natural fiber, silk is one of the easiest but as long as you properly mordant you can also do it on fibers like cotton and linen 😊
do you know of any way to do this without a mordant? ive read some specific plants dont need it but have never seen it in practice, this was with boiling rather than steaming.

It all depends on so many factors… like pre treatment /post treatment / fabric and flowers used etc but actually I find that colours last much longer than people tend to think ☺️
Do you need to soak the final piece in something to set the dye so it doesn't run?

@billynou

There are lots of factors that determine how colourfast the dye is … including mordanting, dye used , fabric dyed and after care…. Some dyes stay better than others but it’s also about (imo) trying to redefine our relationship with the colours and how they express themselves… natural dyes are alive and may change over time or react to changes in environment… but this IS part of the charm ☺️ sometimes the faded colour of the naturally dyed item can look even more appealing than its original shade… having said all that, it is totally possible to keep the colours long lasting too 😉
Hey this is so beautiful… i tried out this method but What can we do stop colour bleeding? When i wash with washing powder it turned out to someother colour… could you please help me with this!?
@billynou
Жыл бұрын
Hello… so I always give a good hot iron after, to kind of heat set the colours and make sure to let it dry before washing. Hand wash gently with cool water and it’s important to use ph neutral soap as often natural dyes are ph sensitive and can shift colour s 😊
