How to Eat Hachiya Persimmons

Hachiya persimmons are one of my favorite fruits this time of year! Here’s how I ripen them. You definitely want to be PATIENT and wait until the fruit is so soft it seems like it’s ready to burst at the slightest touch. Otherwise, you’ll get this really weird feeling in your mouth!
By the way, this is the pointed variety, not the flat ones (fuyu persimmons). You can eat fuyu persimmons firm, though I like to let them ripen with an apple for a few days to soften them slightly.
Confusingly, I'm now seeing some hybrid varieties that look similar to hachiya persimmons (though not as pointed) that can also be eaten firm. For example, the "chocolate persimmon" can be eaten firm. Just remember that hachiya persimmons should be eaten while they're soft.

Never knew how to ripen. I have my Dad's persimmon pudding recipe. We use to have a tree near our home where we gathered fallen ripe ones. Thanks for bringing back fond memories!

I was fed them once, and I've never known why the ones I buy are so astringent. You're the best!

Also super yummy when you freeze them and then eat them when they’ve thawed a little bit.

Thank you so much. A T & T opened up nearby and I bought a few of these. I only knew not to eat when hard and forgot about them... now they're mushy and I was going to compost them. Not any more!

The tomatoes that grow in our plant just look like that persimmon.

Why shouldn't we bite straight into it: flesh and skin?
