I appreciate these videos so much. I live in an area full of nail “chop shops”. I can’t count how many times my friends and I have had rings of fire, burns, cuts... a nail tech filed completely through a spot on my nail plate and the skin beneath with an efile. He blamed it on me for yanking my hand away in pain. This is why I’ve spent years teaching myself to do nails. Thanks to wonderful people like you, I’m learning to create not only beautiful nails, but structurally sound nails in a safe manner. Thank you so much!

Elise Lebens-Bohn omg. Me too. I’ve never had my nails done where I didn’t experience the same thing and/or didn’t have to reshape them myself. I get asked where I get my nails done. I always tell them “the kitchen table salon”. 😂

I second that statement. I got sick of having trenches; not even rings of fire, because they drill so damn hard.

My sister was at one of these places and the put a drill through the nail plate into the nail bed. The nail came away from the nail bed almost totally detached. I could not get her to go to a doctor. I have been doing her nails for a year and we have it healing and growing out now. She told me one of the nail techs slapped her, she said he acted like he was high. She asked to see his license but they would not produce it. Rings of fire on a client that came to me. Cheap price cheap and dangerous work. Support the good salons, go where operators treat you with respect.

@@phyllisjenson9696 most of those employees are all family. they teach each other the basics and obtain fake licensure. It's a huge scheme at the expense of unsuspecting and untrained customers. That's why I started to educate myself. Channels like this have been a blessing Nd I am thankful that real professionals are willing to share their skills with us. For the first time in my life, I was able to put a full set of polygel on myself Nd have 100% no lifting for over 3 weeks and counting. Never happen when I got my nails done.

Thanks for saying which DIRECTION to use the efile. This is the only video I've found that tells you to put it in F if you're right handed and R if you're left handed. 7:37 and 11:13 Such important info that's left out in these tutorials. Thanks.

This is such a fundamental video. I made the mistake of using an e-file on myself for the first time and I think I filed too much and reached my natural nail. I wish I watched your videos before doing anything! 😱 thank you Elizabeth for posting all these instructional videos. Also, you are a very good teacher!!

Liz another great lesson. Can you show us how to support your filing hand when e-filing on yourself? Especially when filing your non-dominant hand. Also how to position your fingers you are e-filing? I am having a really hard time when it comes to my pinky nail. I put it on the edge of my dust extractor but then the vibration feels kinda weird.

You made me a believer in efile . Thank you for all the time you spend teaching us. I have learned a lot from you. I went a bought a $60 efile in Amazon because this one is the one I can afford now and it did a pretty good job. So, I can’t even imagine how well it would be if I brought the one you have. This is huge for me because I love to have beautiful nails done but because of chronic illness, pain stops me from doing my nails. With the efile is a lot easier and faster. I’m so pleased with this technic that yesterday I was able to do mani and pedicure to myself the same day(before, it used to take me one week to complete a pedicure and manicure due to pain and fatigue). I was nervous and afraid of pain but everything went well. I’m so happy 😁. I did a pretty good job. One thing that I didn’t do good job was my cuticles. I was able to push and clean well my cuticles but I couldn’t exfoliated them well at all. I think my efile is not that great for that but I’m pleased with what I accomplished. Thanks a million.

I had acrylics and bi monthly fills for approximately 6 months. I decided to have them removed and I was burned and cut by my certified nail tech. To remove the excess length of the acrylics, she used an e file. She cut the nails so short that she burned or ripped the hyponychium and the tips of several fingers. After she removed the acrylics with acetone wraps, she pointed out that I had rings of fire on several fingers. The tech blamed it on me and said I had sensitive fingernails. Later, when I went home I did some research, I was stunned to find out that the damage was done by her improper use of her e file and had nothing to do with my sensitive skin and nails.. even when she did mechanical filing, she was always cutting me with the file until I bled. I’m watching the videos in the hopes of learning how to properly and safely apply gel polish to my natural nails. Thanks for your informative videos!

Hi Liz, i have really been enjoying this educational series. I live in regional Victoria (Australia) and it is hard to get access to good quality courses and product, i'm a stay at home Mum to a baby so these online videos have been incredibly helpful as i can not afford to commit to a course both financially and with time. I'm self taught for 3 years and these have helped me immensely on fine tuning my craft and bringing out my passion for all things nails. I wouldn't have learnt so much even if i did attend a course! (which i still hope to do in the future, especially if you ever come down to Aus!) Thank you from the bottom of my heart, truly.

Liz, congrats on another home run in the pursuit of correct nail safety & procedures❣️ Although I am a seasoned tech, I strive to keep learning. As a former educator (college level) who designed, authored and delivered a wide variety of curricula, you are a natural born teacher who could easily operate your own school. This information is so badly needed within the nail industry (in my area of North America, anyway☺️)and you have really created an excellent series that will benefit techs and DIY nail enthusiasts everywhere. How I wish this series had been available when I began my nail journey! If I wasn’t leaving the industry, I’d beg to collaborate with you! Again, many thanks. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for 2019. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. 🎄🎉

Fluffy Chicken Soak off gel, is gel that can be removed via soaking it in acetone. Gels that are not “soak off,” must be filed off. We refer to the gels that must be filed off, as "hard gels." PolyGel, is a product that combines the pros of both acrylic and gel. We squeeze it out of a tube and place a little dollop on the nail. How is it like acrylic? It doesn’t run, slide, or pool like gel does. It stays where it is put, until you decide to move it. It may level a bit, but not nearly as much as gel, does. You are in control of it. How is it like gel? It has no odour and cures in a lamp. It is a very good gateway product into learning how to use acrylic. Acrylic, is another product that we can use to build nails. Monomer, is actually one of the things that we use, to sculpt acrylic nails. Monomer, is the liquid that we saturate our brush in, before dipping it in the powder (polymer). It is what causes the “odour,” that acrylic is known for. MMA (methyl methacrylate) is an ingredient used in some* monomers. It is very hard to remove which can cause damage to the natural nail unit. It's very rubbery, gummy and is unfortunately often removed with force, by people who are not properly trained. It's less safe than the alternative -- EMA acrylic. Properly trained nail technicians, use EMA. MMA, is more common in "chop shops," as it's cheaper for them to buy. We know when MMA, is being used, as the "tech," will often over file the nail plate (causing severe damage) and use many other improper practices, to get the MMA to stick. Most horror stories that surround acrylic, (if not all) involve MMA. Yay to EMA, nay to MMA. Alcohol, is used to cleanse the nail plate, remove oils, dirt, bacteria and it also removes the "sticky layer," (inhibition layer) on gel, after we have cured it. Dip Powder, is another way of building nails. The system consists of dipping nails into a powder, after painting on a "base coat," type of product, for the powder to adhere to. You repeat the process of painting and dipping a few times, before filing and proceeding to apply colour to the nails.

Very well explained, thank you. I think people should have a bit of appreciation for someone taking pain to type such a lengthy explanation.

Thank you for touching on the dust issue from filing ! I’m just getting started in a salon that uses dip powder and it’s thick on there sometimes, so removal is much faster to drill it off but veryyyy dusty. (The chairs have built in dust collection) gotta turn them up. Lol ❤️

Great video, can't wait to hear more behind your efile techniques along with the bits. The salon I'm in currently soaks the gel polish off in a soak bowl versus the aluminum foil and cotton technique. At first I thought it was all fine and dandy until I started having clients show signs of Onycholysis along with issues of nails curling and occasional sensitivity when it comes to the scraping removal process. I would like to stray away from the soaking form of Gel polish removal and "upgrade" to the efile but I'm incredibly nervous. I do have a tendency to be heavy handed per experience on myself and my clients say so. I'm comfortable removing gel polish off of enhancements but when it comes to the natural nail my anxiety goes through the roof. I feel this exercise will help me tremendously but, I'm sure anxiety will hit once it comes to trying it on someone other than myself and the practice hand. Will you continue to show more prepping techniques with the efile? I so look forward to the notifications of your new videos on Mondays! Thanks again, I've learned so much through your videos...it always helps to refresh on the basics no matter how long you've been doing nails.

Well I am very happy that you are educating us, especially with the gel removing even the e-file. I bought the stuff on line to do my own nails, I went to one of dose little shops they have at Walmart it was convenient, so I stopped there had my nails done, the woman filed my nails so thin just to touch my face it would hurt, I was in pain for days, now my nails are fully grown, but it toke a long time , now my nails grow with grubs. It was a nightmare I am very grateful you are teaching, greetings from Wyoming.

When you mentioned focusing on being precise rather than being quick, it reminded me of an expression my karate teacher used to use all the time (modified to apply to the nail business): slow is smooth, smooth is fast, fast is money.

Thank you Liz! Your videos are just perfekt, for me you are the best teacher. I've already learned so much of you. .. I wanted to oder that Bit at your homepage. But as I live in Switzerland unfortunately shipping would cost more than 50 dollars... I also would like to see a video how you e-file on your own hands, especially your weaker hand. But anyway: thank you so much for your great work. I'm looking forward to your next ones! Very kindly greetings from Switzerland I wish you a great New Year🤗

Great video as always. I have learned a lot of things from your videos, so thank you for doing all of this. I just finished a nail course about doing nails in general. I took it so I can get sertified to do nails and to get a better filing on doing fake nails, learn how to use an e file and working on other people's hand. So far I've just been doing my nails. I was really scared of the e file. I still am a bit but I have to admit through this course when I did my cuticles and removed products from my nails I was surprised of how different and maybe better it was doing it this way. My cuticles never looked like this and removing product was so much easier, I have trouble doing it with acetone it takes so much time. I definitely ruined on of my nails with the e file I got a ring of fire in it, didn't notice it at the time but when I built a nail in this finger the wait of the product hurts my nail. I bought recently an e file to practice and that's why I rewatched your videos I find them very helpful, I like that you talk about everything. I have a question in the class that I attended we used a ceramic bit to remove product. I was thinking of buying one just like it, I tried using a carbine on but I didn't really manage to do much with it and I was afraid that I will cut myself. So my question is can a ceramic bit be used in the same way as the one that you are presenting here?
