How to Dye Cotton Yarn with a Tulip Tie Dye Kit

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Most of the dyeing tutorials I have made only work on animal fibers, not plant fibers like cotton. I am thrilled today to show you how to dye yarn with the Tulip Tie Dye Kit, allowing you to dye cotton in addition to wool and other fibers. This video shows two methods to dye your cotton yarn, first by winding it into a skein and second by applying dye directly to the the ball of yarn. The Tulip Tie Dye Kit contains almost everything you will need for your dyeing project (except the yarn) but don't forget to protect your work space!

    I often wait at least overnight (if not a couple of days.) More time doesn't heart, but as I mentioned in a different reply, I did an experiment once where I found that steaming for 30 minutes gave very similar results to letting the yarn sit at room temperature for 24 hours.

    I think you would have found that if you had used warm to medium hot water the cotton would have absorbed the water a lot faster than cold. 🤗 I have always found cotton absorbed better when in warm water this is why I stopped washing my cottons in cold water due to them floating too much before finally being dragged down into the cold water wash.

    ChemKnits Tutorials thanks I am so lucky to be living in and around the place where it is grown every summer lol I have been lucky to have been given some Lema wool a few months back 😹 mind you I had to work out how to wash and clean it all 😹😹😹finally worked it out by using small bags made out of a fine gauze like the stuff used for wedding vale’s 😹😹😹 Lucky I still had plenty left over from my wedding vale so am busy making small draw sting bags which I can place the wool and cotton into for washing and even dying as it’s a nylon it does not take up the dye . I worked it out that all I have to do is pull the cord but don’t tie them off as washed string is a problem to untie 😳😳 but using cable ties for wiring this works well as I can undo them with a simple trick with a pointed tip of a knife or an ice pick works just as well😹😹😹😹 I have built a small roving machine which I can crank by hand 😹😹😹 a really basic system but it works even if it’s very small I am saving up for one of the fancy electric ones as this will free up both hands to feed the machine 🤔😺😸 I am hoping to see if I can grow some of the cotton seeds as the flower is so pretty it’s a purple flower and I love it but also it’s not an grown and die at the end plant I have noticed it’s more of a bush plant really so I’m looking forward to seeing if this is true because if so it would be cool to have my own supply of cotton every time the flowers die off naturally 😹😹😹😹

  • @ChemKnitsTutorials

    @ChemKnitsTutorials

    9 жыл бұрын

    Daisy Ransom There are many different dyes you can use on cotton fibers, it is best to look at the recommended fiber types for the dye before trying it out. (The tie dye kit is specifically for cotton Tshirts which is why it worked so well on this yarn.) I haven't used commercial acid dyes yet, but most acid based dyes don't work on cotton. The chemistry of dyeing protein based fibers (wool, silk etc) and cellulose based fibers (cotton, linnen) are different.

    Tie dye can take a lot longer to wash than wool with acid dyes - since the dyes don't exhaust completely. I rinse until it runs clear, but then with the finished item I might wash on its own a few times before including it in regular laundry. (Just like I would with a tie dye t-shirt.) I don't remember if I've tried putting cotton yarn in a laundry bag.... tie dye is a bit of a pain with the washing.

  • @ChemKnitsTutorials

    @ChemKnitsTutorials

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Julie, I'm not sure what your sink is made out of, so it is possible that it could get stained. I have a white porcelain (I think) sink and a stainless steel sink and neither of those have been stained in the projects. My stainless pot has taken up a bit of color from some dyes if the dye is on the edge with the heat (versus being in solution.) For tie dye, i would use a dedicated dye pot. I only use food coloring in pots that I use for cooking. Good luck!

    After mixing the tie dye solution , will it last sitting in the bottles or do you have to use it all right away ?

  • @ChemKnitsTutorials

    @ChemKnitsTutorials

    6 жыл бұрын

    You will get the best results if you use it right away, but TECHNICALLY you can use it after months of sitting there. There are a few videos on the channel where I used old tulip dyes and got some nice colors. I think that the colors degrade while they are sitting in water so there are fewer molecules to react with the yarn.
