How to dye clothing & hats
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is how you dye a piece of clothing, or a cotton hat in this case.
1st) wash your garment. Then get some gloves on and we’ll get to work!
2nd) 3 gallons of hot hot water (140 degrees F is what we’re aiming for) and add your dye. Rit recommends using the ‘paper towel test’ to ensure that the color is what you were aiming for. To do this dip a piece of paper towel into your dyed water and check the color.
3rd) add 1 tsp of dish soap, NOT LAUNDRY DETERGENT, and 1 cup of salt. Both of these will help ensure the dye provides a move uniform coating. Mix thoroughly and now its time to DYE!!!
Throw in your garment and make sure they are mixed often. AFter about an hour you should be complete.
4th) Rinse until the water runs clear, I recommend washing after, otherwise that dye will be loose which can be a problem.

it is important to wet the piece before dying it, especially if the piece is big, use just water. Since it is already soaked, the dye will enter more easily and evenly :) enjoy

“Since it is already soaked, the dye will enter more easily and evenly” makes no sense…
I dye almost everything. I'm a bigger guy who likes wearing items that are fitted so finding things that fit both my body and my unique sense of style are fairly rare. With the dye, I can focus on finding items that fit and have good structure and usually patina dye them into matching my style. There are also a lot of color mixing apps out there now (including one on the RIT Dye website) that let you find the mix of dyes needed to reach any given color you're shooting for. My veteran dying tip would always be to use the stovetop method unless you're dealing with stuff like wool and other fabrics that can't take the heat. For those, you can substitute time for heat. I usually use a propane gas hot plate with a huge stainless steel pot, an infrared thermometer to check the temps and a large pair of barbecue tongs and vinyl gloves to stay clean.

I had to dye a jacket for my Halloween costume My mom did it to be nice. It wasn't coated evenly. It was close to the correct color, but some places looked like it was partially bleached Everyone thought it was intentional It is one of my favorite jackets to date Definitely want to dye something else in the future, so this should help
Rit sells a dye stabilizer I believe it is… color fast or something. That stuff works amazing and after I dyed my thing and used that the color didn’t bleed onto anything I washed with it.

This is helpful. Kinda can't believe I haven't seen one of these videos yet. Thanks!!
You absolutely must wash the item beforehand, otherwise the dye won't evenly distribute over the clothing article. Even if the item is brand new, wash it first. Dying clothing is an art, the tough part is eliminating the potential for dark and light spots. Use very hot water, wear rubber gloves, and keep moving the item for half an hour. It's boring, and you'll want to stop after ten minutes. Don't.
How do you dye a hat but not the embroidery on it? Say it has something embroidered that has multiple colors or it’s white, would you paint it on with a brush or is there a technique to do??

@@Swampgurl777 I thought of this as well. You'd need to remove the wax afterwards which can be a pain. (Papertowel & an iron is my go to though) I'm curious if a liquid fixative like used in watercolour painting would work though?🤔 It just rubs off! Not something I would buy unless I was going to use all of it though. If any trys this let me know how you made out.

🤔 the tag still white???
@st.orville2285
11 ай бұрын
The hat is cotton, but the tag is synthetic silk made from plastic. Dyeing synthetic textiles needs constant hot water, like over a stove. The cotton hat soaks up the dye even without hot water.
That looks so much better
PRO TIP!! After you remove your black dyed piece… rinse it with cold water… put it immediately into a another bucket of hot water with RIT COLOR STAY!!!! COLOR STAY will further enhance the richness of the color as it suggests it makes the color stay and attach, let it sit for a minute or so, keep an eye on it, and swap back and forth with the dye color and color stay. I’ve done this on white air forces 1s, as soon as I would remove the shoes from the dye, the color would look good, but after rinsing it the color would fade off, but when using the color stay it would make the color darker.

The detergents in kitchen detergents are so wildly cool. In school we were infecting e coil with genetic material to produce a custom protein we synthesized. To infect the bacteria we needed a detergent to break up their cell walls to get our genetic carrier inside. Lo and behold we just used a super duper teeny tiny amount of Dawn!
I improve my black /navy clothes periodically by pouring a jar of this bottled dye mixed with a bit of hot water and the salt directly into my washing machine drum. Fill washer with hot water, add clothes needing a revamp and run on the longest wash with cold rinses...select extra rinse if available, otherwise when the cycle is done do a Rinse only cycle. Then dry in dryer.
Weight is also important to establish whether the item has enough dye, or if additional small items can be dyed at one operation.
I am a visual learner so thank you sharing and yes it definitely helped🌞
Thank you!!!!!!!!!

This might be misleading for most of the internet that can't take the extra step to determine what dye is best for their fabric composition. I sound like a dick saying that, but it's not conjecture, just facts, mate. Prepare for the influx. Liked the video 😎

It needed a wash. You can see all the sweat stains. Rit says to wash your clothing first then dye when wet. That’s why your bill looks a murky black/brown.

Just realized i could dye all my black work clothing back to a better colour and get more life out of them bc i sweat in them and theyre cheap walmart clothes so the collar and where i wipe my sweat gets faded fast, but im also cheap and theyre fine otherwise i just wont wear em once they get too bad, this may be a solution 🤔

Try treating the sweat stains as an oil stain before dyeing. As there are oils that come from our skin as well and in deodorant that make sweat stick to fabrics even more. I like to pretreat with ammonia (dissolves grease) and dish soap or dish soap and baking soda seem popular as well.

Get the sweat spots out before you do this, otherwise the dye won't evenly cover the clothing.
Interesting. Im tryna dye new white t shirts so im hoping it will look better. In this case specifically i definitely think the hat shoulda been scrubbed w some sort of cleaning mixture and a brush first for better results
Mine turned Purple.
And how do you keep the cardboard rim from getting all funky?
How do you dispose of that water? How eco friendly is this?
What if you want the logo to stay white?
Also add vinegar to the rinse water ad tumble on high heat or iron to help set the dye so it doesn't bkeed in future. Wash seperately until you are certain that it doesn't.
You got a before and before shot.
Is there a way to keep nike logo white!?
I know this man did not just call dish soap, "Dish Detergent." 😃
Maybe strip the color entirely first to get a more uniform look
Show what it looks like after 1 wash please
I like how you knew the difference between laundry and dish detergent but know the difference between laundry soap and laundry detergent
Is the Rit dye safe to use? And any suggestions on how to dye a lightly bleached spot on some rayon pants?
Why didnt the tag dye?
Ok 👀👍🏼😍🖤✨
You can still see where the hat was discolored from sweat… even after it’s been dyed… so what’s the point
So it’s exactly like Minecraft you put water and the dye color into a bucket and put the clothing in it
You skipped a few important steps: 1. Only natural fibers can be dyed with regular RIT dye (as shown) 2. If your item is made from man-made material or a blend, make sure to use a dye made specifically for it. 3. Strain your dye before adding it to your water 4. Hot water won’t work as well as near boiling water will . You’re welcome

Where can we buy that dye color? I m from Turkmenistan and there is no like that color in our country....
Ok so why didn’t the tag on the inside of the hat get dyed?
Does RIT have any competition?
So it takes 2 runs to get a good result?
Question? -Will a printed shirt be affected if i re-dye it the way you do it, like will the printed logo on it slide off cuz of the hot water or will the print be the same color as the dye if i do it your way¿🤔? Im just concerned about the print logo or picture on it like what will happen?
Is it pretty colorfast? I’m always scared rit will turn my skin black
What about the white tag on the inside? That would of taken dye too
Why didn’t the brim turn to mush?
