    @@PatriotGearReviewsCt big difference in power, as virtually all DRZ400S and SM are the same, regardless of year (except for SM having different suspension/tires/rims/brakes than S and lower ride height). Carbs are all the same, except for the DRZ400E model which is not street legal in US/Canada and has a larger, different style carb.

    Wow! this is one of the best tutorials I have watched on DRZ mods. Excellent explanations and instructions as well as filming(in HD) and editing. I plan on doing these exact mods except I plan to cut down the FMF powercore about 6" just for looks, but I doubt that will effect the jetting. Thanks for making an awesome tutorial!

    you dont have to remove the carb when you do that first needle?

    No, not unless you strip the crappy screw coming out. You can rotate the carb by loosening up the reusable zip ties on the frame.

    Great how to video, I just bought a 2017 drz400sm myself. If i got the jd kit with stock exhaust, but did 3x3 and got a k&n filter should i still go with a 160 main jet? I'm also around 400 ft elevation.

  • @GladiusJon

    Thats a great question. I would start off with the 160, and the Blue needle in the 4th position. . The issue i see tho, is with the stock exhaust. Your corking the Air Flow. Being your allowing a ton of air in (3x3) and A ton of fuel in (160 main). But your corked coming out. (Exhaust). Once you install, test and see if your running rich or lean. You can Remove the Air Box door once the bike is fully up to temp. If It runs better, your too Rich (Drop to a 155 Main). If it runs Worse, you may have it just right, or too lean. Run the Test Under Wide Open Throttle. For Further Tuning Search "AirBox Door Test" on Thumper talk.

    I ended up jetting my drz this past weekend, and holy crap what a difference it made. So much smoother accelerating and the throttle response is nice. It is a lot louder too because of the more open intake. The only problem I had was with one of the JIS screws stripping, and I even had a JIS screwdriver!! I had to rotate the carb the other way (it was one of the back screws) and use a dremel to grind a groove into the head to use a flathead screwdriver. I still have the stock exhaust, the JD jet kit said to just go with the 155 main, blue needle on the 3rd from top groove, and it runs great!

    Actually it only slightly affected fuel milage at a steady pace. The barely noticable decrease was from giving more fuel to those extra ponies there near the power curves. Power curves On a graph or on a road or on a trail... : )

    Hi just wondering what your advice would be on whether I should choose the red or blue needle. Depending on the season, I would normally ride between 50 deg F to 100 deg F... humidity is usualy above 50% BUT I only live at sea level and will never really go above 3000ft so that would mean I should use the blue needle but every thing else suggests i should use the red. I seem to be somewhere between which is confusing me haha. Also how do you choose what position to put the clip on? Thanks in advance!! :)

  • @GladiusJon

    @GladiusJon

    7 жыл бұрын

    phil2468101214 The blue needle richens the muxture. cooler less humid air is more dense air, requiring more fuel. So the blue will be optimal under 70 deg F. I say it boils down to averages. Do you ride more above or below 70 deg F. If above go with the red. As far as clip positions. I dont remember off hand the technical reason why I selected the 4th position. Mine seems to run better in quarter to three quarter throttle. with the clip in 4th tho.
