Suzuki DR-Z400 3x3 Mod (High Definition)

While helpful, I was disappointed in the quality of the videos covering this popular mod for the Suzuki DR-Z400, so I decided I'd make a higher resolution video for future tinkerers like myself.
The bike picked up significant mid-range power with this mod. Stock I couldn't even clutch up second gear and do a wheelie and now it comes right up.

Doing this mod, along with a full performance exhaust and jet kit, really gave my Drz400 a good boost in power. The power increase is very noticeable, and the throttle response is much better now too. I would definitely recommend this mod. Just keep in mind, you can expect the need for more frequent oil changes with the larger intake hole on airbox.

Just bought a used DRZ it had the 3x3 mod done to it I just noticed. No clue if it’s been rejetted though. Any idea easiest way to find that out? The previous owner didn’t do it so he doesn’t know. And it’s completely stock besides that. Seems to ride fine too

@@jake2772Is the exhaust popping/back firing at all when letting off the throttle and decelerating? You will need to remove the carburetor and check what size jets you currently have installed. I couldn't remember what the stock jet sizes were, but I looked it up for you. Stock jetting for Mikuni BSR carburetor found on DRZ400 S/SM models Main Jet: 142.5 Air Jet: 62.5 Pilot Jet: 22.5

@@jake2772 Not a problem, glad to help. The numbers will be written on the individual brass jets themselves, inside the carburetor. You will need to remove the carburetor float bowl in order to access the jets. On the DRZ400 the carburetor is really crammed in there tight, it can be frustrating removing it from the bike if you haven't done it before, so take your time with it. There are several how to videos here on KZread, I would recommend watching a couple and following along.

Good video. The only thing I can suggest to you, or anyone else working on Japanese bikes - get a good set of JIS screwdrivers. The fasteners on our bikes aren't Phillips like they might seem at first glance, but rather JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). This was something an old motorcycle mechanic taught me 20 years ago, and I quit stripping screws on these bikes since then.

  • @CubanRider

AKJeeper Absolutely! I was going to make the same comment. I bought some great Vessel screwdrivers that have a hex section so that you can use a wrench on them if the screws are tight ( www.vesseltools.com/handtools/screwdrivers/megadora/930-kit-p123-detail). They work like a charm. Using Phillips screwdrivers on JIS fasteners or on Pozidrive (found on Brit bikes) just chews up the heads and ruins your screwdriver as well, although Philips screwdrivers are junk to begin with, so no real loss there.

5:22 a little note on the float bowl screws (stripped in the video), they strip because people are using philips screwdrivers on them when they are actually JIS screws (Japanese industrial standard). They are similar to philips but ever so slightly different. It doesn't help that they are put on TIGHT when stock and they are made of the softest metal known to mankind.... Anyway, I was able to get mine off without stripping when applying a ton of downward pressure and using a JIS screw driver.

Yes yes and yes again, I'm blown away by the amount of people that don't know this... What happens if you jet the carb but don’t do the air box mod? I recently sent my drz in for its first service (600 miles) and while it was there I told them to jet the carb and put a new full yoshi exhaust system on the bike. I don’t know if they did the air box mod and my bike seems to be running a little strange since they did the mods. While riding around 60 mph the bike just shut off and sometimes when I twist the throttle I feel I don’t get an immediate response. Would the airbox feed the system enough air to make it run correctly if the airbox mod wasn’t done after they put the jet kit in? Any info would help. Thanks in advance!

You need to get a nice hand impact for the float bowl screws

Not at all, het JIS screwdrivers, Phillips head drivers chew the screws up, The screws are Japanese Industry Standard, hence JIS, use a JIS screwdriver, you can thank me later.....

I just bought a used drz400s. The previous owner did an airbox mod but it wasn't the common 3×3. He used a 2" hole saw and cut four 2" holes along with the original inlet. The 4 holes together add up to 12.5 square inches plus that other hole. When I asked him what size jet he used he just said "the right one" . Should I buy another airbox and jet kit and start from scratch? The bike runs good, no bogging or pinging.

If it runs good then I wouldn't worry, a bit more fuel or air is not going to hurt the bike.

A Dremel tool would be good for the air box mod

Gracias hermano. Eso fue cuando la DRZ estaba nueva. La termine vendiendo a finales del verano pasado ya con más de 4500 millas. El 3x3 funciona perfecto, le da un poco mas de torque que era lo que estaba buscando para levantar gomas. Saludos!

is that the ecu under the seat? doesnt it kind of eliminate some of the effect of the 3x3 by it being mounted back over the hole?

Great video, but would have been good to have got a bit of commentary as you pulled / disconnected various hoses and cables off, and dismantled the carb, for the first timer bike mechanics like myself.
