So what are the main ways to dress down the DB jacket? We came up with seven points.
Number one, do pair your double-breasted jacket with more casual pants as well as informal shirts. Specifically, that means skip the white or pale blue shirt and instead, go with something maybe in a washed denim. Alternatively, you could also go with flannel because it makes you look softer and more relaxed. In terms of colors, consider earthy tones and pastel tones in the range of brown, ivory, or yellow. These warm colors are perfect when combined with a double-breasted jacket.
Two, do pair your double-breasted jackets with informal accessories and accouterments like shoes. That means skip the oxford and instead go with a monk strap shoe, maybe a double monk or loafers. Choose derbies over oxfords because they're a little less formal. If you only have oxfords or only formal derbies, consider getting colorful shoelaces because they really break up the formality of your shoes and make it look like an entirely new pair which is great for casual DB combinations.
Three, consider skipping accessories altogether. That means no tie and instead of over the calf socks, go with no-show socks, that gives your ensemble definitely a very casual appearance. Of course, the notion of no sock look only works during the summer, otherwise, you'll be too cold. If you wear a shirt, skip the cufflinks, go with a barrel cuff, you can even leave it unbuttoned for a very casual feel.
Four, get casual buttons. If you have dark horn buttons or maybe plastic buttons, they look very formal. On a double-breasted jacket such as a navy blazer, adding maybe mother-of-pearl buttons in a contrasting white is a clear sign to dress something down. As a general rule of thumb, the lighter the button color and the more contrasting, the more casual the overall look and feel.
Five, play with your button configurations. Most double-breasted jackets or suits come in a six-two configuration meaning of six buttons, two of which are buttoned. Traditionally, you'd button the two lower ones which would create a much more formal look. Alternatively, you can leave the bottom button undone or you can button the whole thing just on the bottom row and see how it looks.
Six, pair the blazer or jacket with a turtleneck sweater or
maybe a wool knit polo shirt. For a casual DB ensemble, the turtleneck sweater is ideal because it creates some visual interest in an area where you usually have neckwear or a bow tie. Because it covers your neck, you'll feel warmer which is in line with the two layers of fabric in the double-breasted jacket that will keep you warmer than a comparatively single-breasted one.
Seven, intentionally buy more casual double-breasted jackets and blazers. Opting for something maybe in a linen fabric or something with a Glen check pattern in gray with colors of maybe purple or green is just a lot more casual and the whole look is easier to pull off.
So now that you know the 7 things to pay attention to when choosing a double-breasted coat, what are the things to avoid?
First of all, don't pair a doubt breasted jacket with jeans because denim is simply too casual and will clash with the formality of the double-breasted coat.
Two, don't wear a jacket unbuttoned unless it's your idea of sprezzatura.
Three, don't try to dress down a striped jacket because that is a very formal garment that is usually seen on Wall Street or in a business environment.
Four, don't try to put your hands in your pockets constantly even though it makes you look more casual. Yes, it is true, having a hand in your pocket makes you look more relaxed but overall, if you try to just have your hands in your pockets all the time, you end up having your clothes wearing you rather than you wearing the clothes.

Hahaha! Ok, I’m not the only one
This is one look that definitely suits you, makes you look younger, and very contemporary.
The turtle neck with a double breasted jacket has a super stylish look. A (vintage) ski resort vibe.
I'm not into DBs myself (the closest I get is my peacoat) but I do enjoy seeing them styled creatively like this.
Personally, I would never wear a polo shirt of any kind with a jacket, double breasted or otherwise. I'd say stick with turtlenecks in winter or summer open weave shirts.

Called tunic shirt you will need to buy collar studs two in a set short one at the back long in the front as it goes through 4 layers of fabric and get different types of collar one traditional and one penny collar you can cover most occasions with that also looks good without the collar and stud
I was thrilled when I saw the title of this video. Until recently, I never considered DB jackets; after buying a navy DB wool jacket from a charity/thirft shop, I really an taken with DB jackets. This suits me down to the ground as I don't have the need to wear formal attire very often, rather I prefer to dress down my jackets with moleskin trousers and a pair of single monks straps in dark brown suede. Another well-informed, quality video :-) thanks
@Gentleman's Gazette I've been watching your videos for most of a year now, and without exception they've contributed greatly to the professionalism expressed in my wardrobe and day to day style. That said, this video is especially relevant to my current career path. While I desire to present myself in a distinguished and self respecting light, as a "Union man" it's easy to feel out of place. Something as simple as well fitted suit and tie already borders on 'church clothes.' I very much appreciate these clear tips on dressing up without being overdressed, many of the looks you demonstrated are ideally suited to the culture around me. 10/10, looking forward to more

Raphael, I'm obsessed with DB jackets and coats. Would love more videos on the subject. Thanks as always.
About time this video was made. A lot of people need to see this....I've always used coats as both formal and casual purposes
Another great video! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into helping us. Keep it up!
I actually like your look in the unbuttoned db shot.

Hello Raphael love the tutorial! Hope to see an similar tutorial on double breasted coat as well. Keep up the good work!
Great show!
Now I finally know how to get more wear out of my vintage Brioni DB jacket in charcoal. It's an orphaned suit jacket (I guess) and I found it on eBay for only 20€. However, I always found it hard to pair it, even though it fits quite well. But now I know how. Thank you, Raphael! Liebe Grüße!

My go-to DB dressed down ensemble is charcoal gray wool flannel trousers, burgundy tassel loafers, a striped Oxford button-down or spearpoint collar, a patterned tie, and a navy DB jacket.
Thanks for the advice Raphael 🤟🏼
Great presentation, thanks.
Thanks a lot, for detailed advice, clearly spoken 👏 👍
This is one of my all time favorite looks! Thanks for the ideas.
I like how you work those lower buttons! It's taught as a faux pas everywhere else but you rock that like a champ! I think it only works if you really know what you're doing tho.
i am female but watch this to get inspirations for how to dress my fiance. And he enjoys this channel as well!! You dress very well!!! You look flawless :D Thank you for being such a gentleman guide
Just the inspiration I was looking for, thank you.
Most of the GG videos are covering the basics... this one is very informative and interesting. I’m already thinking of options...
Funny how I faced this very question just a few days ago! Having a rather limited wardrobe (and space!) at the moment, I had to make do with what was available to dress down my navy blazer. Ended up with a pair of mint green chinos, no pocket square (as I only have a white linen one at the moment), a knit tie in mottled red and navy, and a striped shirt in blue and white. From that colour palette, you can see the limits I'm currently facing. And I'm not terribly sure I succeeded, ha!
Cool thank you. Appreciate the guidance.
Thank you

hello good video, I would like to know if you could recommend me some kind of suit for the warm weather regions
Thank you...
Hey can you do a video on Abercrombie specifically the wool ultra parka and also Burberry trench coats thanks.
I have a question Sven, how do you dress for hot weather, like 35 degrees C plus? I still currently wear a suit and tie minus single breasted jacket from time to time.
I was wondering whether or not to wear a 6-1 configuration. I know that usually its a no, but i've seen Paul Keating wearing them in the 90s and i liked the look of it. Just asking for some advice. love the videos
My casual look is a brown tan corduroy blazer, white dress shirt, faded blue jeans and cordovan pointed cowboy boots (Tony Lamas). Not fancy but you can wear it almost anywhere.
very informative. Thank you for those useful tips 👍
Are you able to make your annotations clickable when referencing other videos?
I don't even have a single breasted jacket in my wardrobe yet, I guess it is good information to know for when I do!
I like the jacket worn in the video. I don’t wear them myself though, as I like to wear my jackets open.
Ox blood is good , I love wing tip shoes
I've never seen better looking turtlenecks than the ones you wear in these videos! I got to get one that looks that great. Edit: Uniqlo?! I would have never guessed. I'm an inpatient boy, sorry for not watching until the end.
Im so lucky to found this channel! Exactly what i needed. I was wondering is it possible if you can make video for age of 20s suit shoes and whole set? I want to be look fresh yet classic. Please!

The lilac jacket and linen squares with patch are part of a complete suit or are they separate pieces? If they are part of a suit I would like to see them complete, especially the lilac, looks so chic.

I've been mulling over buying a double breasted jacket. This was helpful. I'm closer to making the plunge
Hi Sven, first time commenting on the channel. Love your stuff. I would like to acquire a DB sportcoat, but I was oriented toward a 2 x 4 button scheme rather than the more common 2 x 6. Can you comment on it? Yay or nay?
That last point, about not having your hands in your pocket. That is something I typically do, but the latest suit I bougt doesn't vents, and since I always have my suits closed when I'm stadning, I cannot have my hands in my pockets when wearing that particular suit. I guess that is a good thing.
Take a shot everytime Sven says "casual"

hello! is a double breasted coat supposed to buttoned up as well?
Superb video! Cleared a big question that I had: WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO BUTTON A DB JACKET? good, good! Only question remains for me...do you undo your buttons when sitting down, or not? heard both options.

You can undo the bottom buttons but keep the upper ones closed
A vintage t shirt and double breasted jacket and dress pants is so underrated 😍
Those double breasted suits are so gorgeous.. I can't decide which I like more... I think I'd pick the black one with the white turtleneck since I really love turtlenecks, especially in black and white...
Mr. Schneider, may I ask. How tall are you?
I can not find a turtleneck in the size, color and style I want. They are NOT readily available in the stores in my area and I have the distinct feeling that ordering one online will only result in a bad fit. Any suggestions?

The video is very nice but I have to say that I disagree in the combination of jeans with a double breasted blazer! I like this combo with a turtleneck, as long as the buttons of the blazer are in a dark color.
