Another great tutorial, Teoh. It's funny, in comics, when artists put in a lot of what you called scratchy lines, it's called "hay," like hay in a farm field , like "that guy puts a lot of hay in his drawings." And again, it is considered distracting from the natural storytelling of the images, much the same way that you describe in a single sketch. It is interesting to me that you stress not having"broken lines," And the important point would be to stress boldness or bravery on the part of artists who are perhaps too hesitant, and your point about the fact that we are not doing photographic representation, but impressionistic drawing is important to perhaps relieve some of the stress and artist will feel that will cause them to do both sketchy and broken lies in their drawings. But I'd caution beginners not to be TOO wary, because the use of broken lines is very definitely a stylistic approach that is valid & is used quite successfully by a great many illustrators, it may just be a particular peeve of yours. Often people today can more easily get their heads around the idea if you suggest how difficult it would be to try to do bucket fills w/a paint program in their drawings if there are broken lines. But there ARE a great many illustrators for whom the broken line is a distinctive & quite attractive aspect of their style and its funny to me to say that you don't like the broken lines when an illustrator whose detail is meticulous, such as in the drawing by Simone, nevertheless the color is really "splashed in" almost randomly, in a manner that might be called the coloring equivalent of "broken lines" but done to quite lovely effect.
“Understand where those lines are going to end” Thank you Teoh!
I liked that remark; "or that level of stress" when you talk about photorealistic drawing, you are so right😄 Great admirer of your line art btw, how you casually sketch directly in permanent ink, impressive!
nice, simple and straight to the point, as it should be! Really nice video.
Even in digital art, these tips help alot!! THX
honestly, the thing i really love about your artwork is that you dont pay too much on the details which is honestly a skill i wish i can develop. i am an amateur with drawing and painting and sometimes i doubt myself and being someone who just learns how to draw and paint, one thing i realized is that i could be paying too much time and attention on trying to make my work as detail as possible and that overwhelms me as a beginner.
This is a good video and tutorial. I will practice it with my artstyle. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing. Excellent lesson.
I really like your tutorials. Keep up the good work.
I liked this tutorial, its simple yet informative

Short but very informative 👍🍺
Your videos are always a source of inspiration. I find myself reaching for my sketchbook after watching your videos! ( which is always a good thing!)
Thank you for the tips! I've been drawing loosely lately and these have helped.
This is a very approachable tutorial, and feels like it has distinct things I can implement into my work immediately.
I'll keep this in mind thank you
Very helpful! Thanks!
Nice tutorial with great examples. I am a beginner so it is very informative video. I am Learing drawing using pen so i must make my mind when putting my pen on paper to not make mistakes 😂
I like how when you make a mistake you point it out and explain how to improve ^w^
thank you for this tutorial!!
Awesome!!! This is so helpful even if I specialize in digital art. Great video❤️❤️
Thank you for this great tutorial!! I learned a lot
Love this kind of videos thats intended to share masters knowledge
So good!
another tutorial that will help me a lott
Architect nibs are the special ones to draw straight, clear and fine lines but only bold at horizontal line and thin at vertical, so difficult to have a one movement on a long or complicate line. Oblique allow more some mistakes of angles in the movement. So if you don't mind the line to have the same thickness for the whole drawing, better to have a normal nib but very smooth on a right paper for ink. Some mix media papers allow watercolors if wet on dry and only one layer.
I got.my inspiration from watching your video's. Enjoy the simplification of how you show us doing these lines in detail " I've always had a hard time of looking at people or objects and sketching them" but I'm more of a reference photo sketcher or from drawings in books
Thank you so much.
Good lesson..... thanks...
First is to have the right nib, not scratching, and to be sure that the paper have enough smooth surface. That is the reason why I like working on hot pressed paper or cold pressed not very grainy and not too absorbing.

Think you use Platinum Carbon ink but what nib for sketching? Fine? Extra fine? Flexible nib, ever? Do you ever need to carry extra ink?!

@@RebeccaSB I use Noodler's black archival and Noodler's Lexington grey. I was just thinking about changing the Noodler's black for another brand because sometimes Noodler's black archival doesn't dry enough quickly. But the ones which dry quickly tend to dry also into the head of the pen so it must be cleaned with demineralized water, each time you finish to use it to don't obstruct the head and the nib. I have different fountain pens with different nibs, even a Jinhao with a zebra G nib that I like. But the one that I often use to draw is a Moonman with a 0.5 nib which one draws thinner when I reverse the pen, so I can draw fast with any side of the nib, it contains more ink than the others. I never use refills, only converters. I also have a Jinhao with a curve nib but a bit difficult to draw with (more for calligraphy). Fountain pens have to be a personal experience because the gesture from one to another is not the same for drawing. Some people draw nervously, other slowly, other both... Also how you hold the pen can be different from one to another.
Another awesome tutorial! I love your videos. You are my favorite art/ watercolor subscription. I follow you on here and insta. You I should be a teacher. You are very good at explaining how to do drawing, watercolor painting and even when you explain products. Thank you for all your tips and help. You are the best! You have help inspire my art and help me become a better artist.
Another interesting video Parka ! Sometimes, loose lines "give life" to a sketch. It's important don't do lines with a ruler, it's a crime 😂 - it's my opinion ...
Good tips!
Nice tutorial
👍👍
Amazing Tutorial. I’ve had trouble trying to get the perfect line over and over again before.

Another excellent tutorial. Can you provide a link where you got the book the urban sketching handbook thanks bud!!
Thanks very much for this. I recognized the Mukilteo lighthouse before I saw the caption as I have sketched there.

I mostly have issues with linework on Procreate on the iPad, maybe I just need to choose the right brushes for lines...
Hi Teoh, thanks for these tips. I feel a lot of my scratchy and/or broken lines happen because I’m drawing over a framework sketch in pencil I do initially to help set perspective, shape, and space. Without those pencils sketches my drawing inevitably goes off the page or the perspective is way off, but drawing over those framework lines cause the issues you mention in this video. I notice you don’t do those kinds of preparatory sketches, and a lot of those examples you show from the book don’t seem to either. Do you have a video that explains how you draw without these guidelines? I’m always amazed at your skill of getting the perspective and shape right with no guidelines. Maybe it’s just from confidence gained through practice?
that you for the tiiiips OvO)/
I really like your tutorials! Have you ever considered creating a Skillshare class, or something similar? (I say Skillshare because I have a subscription, no idea if that is worthwhile to a creator like you...)
