All you need for this tutorial is some standard computer printer paper. I do however recommend that you use drawing or sketch paper for better results because of the tooth of the paper. It makes it a lot easier to make tones because of it. The only other tool you really need is a range of pencils. I always recommend a 2H HB and 2B. Then use a 4B or 6B for the very last detail works of the piece.
Start any drawing out with a 2H. This will be used for getting general lines down in place as well as small detail work.
For this drawing, I used the lighter pencil to start out the very base of all the leaves in this drawing. I always start light to get the placement down as well as first initial details.
After I have the very first base coat down, I will then go in with darker pencils to make more volume within the drawing. Ill do this with the branches and leaves. This also helps to bring out a lot of depth within the drawing.
After the second layer is applied, the 3rd layer is just to darken all the darks of the drawing even more. This is usually the last step needed to create volumetric shapes and forms.
After this it is really just practice. Not everybody will be able to draw this right off but give it a few tries and it will come easily.
It is all within the practice!
Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial!

Here here! I'm really new to sketching and I find it really frustrating that too many are time lapsed and it makes it harder for me to understand the concept of applying the pencil and time. Thank you Tyler
Thank you, I love watching how other artists work & learning new techniques. Fabulous video and gorgeous trees!
I was struggling on drawing leaves and this just helped me so much, thank you.
Have had issues with leaves for a long time, now I see I have been holding the pencil wrong. and to graduate my colors from light to the closer I get to the branch darker, thank you Tyler
Got to try this - for the first time someone finally showed how to create this effect of 3d leaves. Thank you very much, now I should be able to draw my tree ^^
Great to hear! I also did a lot of anime type drawings way back. I wasn't really into anime tv shows or anything but I liked the art style. Then I transitioned to landscape and have been drawing them for years now. It is what I enjoy doing :)
This is a great video! I really liked the real-time tutorial so that I can actually see what you're doing. Thanks!
All of these videos have been really helpful; hope he decides to come back and make more videos one day
Thanks for the tips. It sure helps people like myself who are just starting even though I am a senior.
less work and still comes out great :) love it
Thank you. I have been trying drawing and painting and it’s taking sometime, but watching KZread has taught me more than when I went to college and had to take an art class. Thank you I had no idea how to draw anything nor at least leaves, you however have shown me how to do it.
Nice work this is the first vid I see from you i'll like to see other drawings you have in your sketch book.
Thank you for posting these videos, they really help me.
I like the shading depth in this style of leaves. Nice job. Thanks
That was perfect, understanding that I must have patience and drawing a tree take hours.
Good video. I will try this only with pastels instead of with pencils. Real time videos are much easier for me to understand than the 2x, 4x, versions that you seem to get all over the tube. Thank you for posting it.
Awesomw. This was actually the first video that described in detail what I was missing.
Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. I followed your technique and I was so pleased with the results. Thanks again.
Cool technique! I too have always had trouble drawing trees. You've taught me a new way of adding leaves to trees.
I am a new artist self taught and I really enjoyed this because drawing trees is how I started and they are the base of all of my pictures and I color everything with markers no paint. I could use any information you would want to share and also I would appreciate anything you want to share about shading it is the most difficult for me. Thanks
I love your "real time" video. You are an inspiration to we fledgling artists. Thanks.
Love this video, I have struggled with realistic leaves. I will try your way of doing it out. When the weather warms I would love to see you draw from a park bench or some place like that and draw a scene over looking the river with some trees in the foreground. (you would not have to have the city background). I think that would be cool.
Great tutorial, have been looking for a better style of doing leaves and I think this will work well. Thanks for doing the vids
You're awesome! I am learning a lot watching your videos. Thank you. I really liked that you made small talk while drawing. It made the whole atmosphere feel relaxing while I was drawing. Thanks a lot!
I just wanted to let you know your video was a life saver for my final project! I have to use markers, but I was still able to apply your lesson and tweak the media for the project and it worked beautifully! Thank you!
I love your tutorials. The way you tell us what your doing. I would love to see you do an old barn, old water pump, and maybe an old windmill. just an idea. thanks
wow! what a beautiful drawing real leaves
Thanks , helped a lot ☺😉. Went to art class today and I had to draw a tree so now I know how to do the leaves
Hi, so i just looked up how to draw leaves because i was having a very hard time making the leaves i draw on my trees look realistic. I am in an AP Art class and we have a project we have to do on houses and a tree has to be next to the house. So i followed along in your video did lol my tree came to life. It is the best tree i have ever done so far and I am going to show your video to my art class just in case they are having the same dilema so thank you for sharing your knowledge of drawing :)
Awesome! I was hoping that it would really give everyone a new and different method of how to draw leaves. Glad that you enjoyed it!
Cool video! Going to start watching the rest of them as well, love the style, would love to learn to be able to draw like that!
Your leaves are really good, thanks for posting this video now I have a better idea of how to draw leaves. I'm just starting to draw realistic trees so this is a good way start drawing the leaves.
This was great. I like your taking it step by step and slowly explaining. No music to distract me. Thanks. Like to see bonsai, different kinds of trees. How you do the textured grass too. Thanks
I am glad that you are getting some nice use out of the content and thanks a lot for the comment!
That is really awesome to hear! Thanks a lot for posting!
This video is great. I may use it as a tutorial for my homeschool art class. 👍
Thank you Tyler for a very informative video. I have always struggled with trees and leaves and wondered how to draw them. Well your video is excellent and thank you. I like the way you talk about your weather whilst you are drawing, it is interesting. Our weather here in Australia is very changeable too. Best wishes to you Ann in Victor Harbor, South Australia.
I can’t describe how much i love this channel !!
Thank so much for your wonderful ideas. I'm art student and learning from the experts... Your technique easy to learn and understand.....
for me I just was happening to find this on here where I been trying to draw with using graphite because I am self teaching my self from others like you that is taking your time to show how to draw. it just took me time to find what I wanted to learn what your showing. your doing fine am finding things to get ideas and learn how to draws and back grounds from you.
Thank you for taking your time! It's great video!
Nice video. I really learnt a lot. And I'd like to see something along the lines of the basics of drawing things, so thanks. Really helpful.
I love the way you drew the leaves. I have found myself drawing a lot of winter trees. The effect can be obtained in acrylic painting, but I couldn't figure this out in pencil drawing.
Cool tips. Easy to follow and a great lesson. Thanks for taking the time to show me.
Patience is definitely key it took me hours to draw a tree
Great to hear that you enjoyed the video. I have been told by a few that I should look into tattoo designing but I haven't really looked into it so much.
Loved your narration!
I thought this was very helpful in more ways than one. I am going to try it your way I think it was what I was looking for. Do more . Thanks
I am just glad to hear that you tried. That is the biggest step!
I really like this video, i'm a new artist and self taught so this video helps a lot thank you
Thank you, That's really lovely. I love your tree.
Awesome, really descriptive! I couldn't understand the concept of "negative space" my art teacher was throwing at me until I saw this video. Thank you!

Thanks for all the tutorials, this one is great. Glad i found this KZread channel. Keep it up!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
this was a great video for me to learn :) thanks! if you ever have a time please teach us how to draw trees on fire....
THANK YOU!! Finally my trees don’t have to be dead bushes!! Could you show us how to do grass?
Great video. I drew along with you and loved the effect! I subscribed and look for your videos everyday so keep them coming. They are a very big help to me. Thank you.
Many thanks. Excellent video.
Thanks Tyler I've try ed doing smaller trees and honestly I believe as you do, it's so artistic and real looking. You video was so good and I am about to draw a landscape with holding the pencil the way you do😊

Thank you was looking for another art channel, wanted too draw more landscapes and nature, thank you so much.
I love your work. I'm going to try this method. I like it because it has a watercolor look and the leaves seem to move.
I really enjoyed this. You do a wonderful job. Thank you.
Not sure myself. Everybody has their own reasons for not liking a video, even if they are trolling. I am glad you enjoy them though! Thanks for posting!
Awesome! I have always had trouble with drawing trees myself so I made it a mission to get myself good at it. Now I love to draw trees. It is awesome that you learned from the video. I actually have quite a few videos on trees on my channel. I hope you do get the chance to show the video for the class. Thanks a lot!

Thank you! Very helpful.
Negative space is a difficult concept to grasp. I find that it is hard to be understood until it is applied in different ways. It is quite a lot of fun as well haha. Thanks for posting!
Thank you!! I am a beginner and I love how you explained your technique/ how to hold the pencil and actually showed yourself doing it. You also have a very calming voice to play whilst drawing! Lol (:
You should write a book about drawing nature. I am not gonna lie you are pretty good at drawing. I have awlays think about how to make REALISTIC leaves. This video was the perfect one. TNANK YOU.
Thanks a lot! Having a channel that eventually gets very popular will be very cool but also scary at the same time haha. I am looking at it now and just wondering where all these people come from every day that subscribe. It has been quite the fun ride.
God bless you! My work is vary nice, thanks to this tutorial.
I miss doing oil pastel myself. Not sure when I will get back into it but I know I will eventually... Thanks for posting.

Thnx for putting the ad on the end instead of somewhere in the middle!
Thanks a lot! Happy to hear that you enjoyed it!
I always had so much trouble with drawing leaves. It wasn't for a while that I finally figured out how to do it. And it is funny that in drawing leaves, you really don't even draw them. but it still come out looking like leaves. Oh the wonders of drawing :)
I love this vid! Thanks Tyler. Light in the back grr i was doing the opposite or monotone lol.
This video really helped me a lot, thanks.

gREAT JOB !!!
Give it a shot! You never know what talents you might have!
thank u i really appreciate ur work
It is amazing how many different forms of art there really are and finding the right fit can be difficult. I went though anime as well before settling on landscapes. I was never a huge anime fan but I like the art style very much. But as soon as I started on doing landscapes I just got hooked and have been doing them ever since. One of the main reasons why is that I like adding in details and texture and that works really well for this topic. Thanks a lot for the comment!
I love the real time torturials you do. I hope you have alot of them that is for the bigger drawings too. ^^
amazing drawings!
I love it pretty cool.
Awesome! Glad that you found the video useful! Thanks for the comment.
awesome this is so helpful!
awesome drawing...
Thanks a lot! I do try to do the real time videos with the more simple aspects. I find that it does tend to help a lot of people out.
