All you need for this tutorial is some standard computer printer paper. I do however recommend that you use drawing or sketch paper for better results because of the tooth of the paper. It makes it a lot easier to make tones because of it. The only other tool you really need is a range of pencils. I always recommend a 2H HB and 2B. Then use a 4B or 6B for the very last detail works of the piece.
Start any drawing out with a 2H. This will be used for getting general lines down in place as well as small detail work.
For this drawing, I used the lighter pencil to start out the very base of all the leaves in this drawing. I always start light to get the placement down as well as first initial details.
After I have the very first base coat down, I will then go in with darker pencils to make more volume within the drawing. Ill do this with the branches and leaves. This also helps to bring out a lot of depth within the drawing.
After the second layer is applied, the 3rd layer is just to darken all the darks of the drawing even more. This is usually the last step needed to create volumetric shapes and forms.
After this it is really just practice. Not everybody will be able to draw this right off but give it a few tries and it will come easily.
It is all within the practice!
Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial!

Great to hear! I also did a lot of anime type drawings way back. I wasn't really into anime tv shows or anything but I liked the art style. Then I transitioned to landscape and have been drawing them for years now. It is what I enjoy doing :)

Love this video, I have struggled with realistic leaves. I will try your way of doing it out. When the weather warms I would love to see you draw from a park bench or some place like that and draw a scene over looking the river with some trees in the foreground. (you would not have to have the city background). I think that would be cool.

I am in an AP Art class and we have a project we have to do on houses and a tree has to be next to the house. So i followed along in your video did lol my tree came to life. It is the best tree i have ever done so far and I am going to show your video to my art class just in case they are having the same dilema so thank you for sharing your knowledge of drawing :)

It is amazing how many different forms of art there really are and finding the right fit can be difficult. I went though anime as well before settling on landscapes. I was never a huge anime fan but I like the art style very much. But as soon as I started on doing landscapes I just got hooked and have been doing them ever since. One of the main reasons why is that I like adding in details and texture and that works really well for this topic. Thanks a lot for the comment!
