Judging by the name, a fellow Hungarian?! :) This is the best tutorial on how to draw organic shapes that I've ever seen. Nobody else gives you clear guidance on how to draw those ellipses inside, they just leave you in the dust about it.

Yes indeed, well type of it anyways :) And thanks i'm glad you find it useful! It is a bit of a struggle explaining ellipses, they are always hard no matter what.

This is EXACTLYYYY what I needed. I’d been searching for hours on how to draw these snake-like cylinders in perspective. Thank you!

Is there an explanation as to why the minor axis always a tangent to the guide line?

  • @robertlkiss

No idea that is how I taught, never thought abut asking why

  • @Meowch3

It is because the minor axis is also always the normal of an ellipse** (a normal is a line that is perpendicular to an object). Looking at an ellipse in a 2d flat way with zero perspective, the minor axis is a line dividing the ellipse exactly in half. But looking at it in a 3d way, the minor axis is actually a perpendicular line skewering the ellipse. That skewer is like the axel of a wheel, and is actually your guide line, only it's not straight because we've chosen to bend it in all sorts of ways! Being bent, you're forced to draw tangent to it when drawing its cross section, an ellipse. **Technically, true in real life, but not on our flat piece of paper because it introduces distortion. On paper, the normal and minor axis of an ellipse will only coincide at the center of vision. But since it's a good enough approximation when drawing inside the cone of vision, and since almost all artists, including Scott Robertson, ignore this fact, we'll ignore it too.
