How to Draw a Still Life Accurately: PART 3 - PaulPriestleyArt
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Learn how to draw accurately. This is the easy still life drawing video is the third in my series on How to Draw a Still Life Accurately. This time I am concentrating on adding tone; light and shade. I am using two pencils; 2B and a 6B and a 4B piece of graphite. I explain how dark tones make light tones stand out, how to shade in a very subtle way using the side of the pencil. I also show how to create the subtle reflections from a shiny surface on to the bottom of two eggs. I also show how important it is to create edges to define objects rather than using outlines. All this information can be applied to any still life drawing.
This art tutorial is aimed at those wishing to improve their drawing skills.

This is one of the better instructional drawing videos . No distracting music ! And we get to see the original set up he is drawing from as he draws. This is very important. He explains what he is doing and why. My sole complaint ( that is too harsh a word ) is that when he is shading the egg, he refers to the light reflecting off the table surface onto the egg as a highlight.The highlight strictly speaking, is the spot on the egg that receives the strongest illumination...the spot that appears lightest/brightest to the eye. What he is referring to is called reflected light. This is light that hits a shadowed area and illuminates it.
@PaulPriestleyart
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Gerald you are right, it is reflected light, not a highlight, you're the first to spot the slip of the tongue, I'd not realised until I'd uploaded the video, so wasn't going to re-record the commentary then. Paul
Awesome!! Thanks for the tutorial!

Hi, this was really helpful, as I’m trying to get into an advanced art elective next year for school, and I have to put together a portfolio. I do want to ask though, do you recommend blending the shading, just to produce a slightly smoother effect?
@PaulPriestleyart
5 жыл бұрын
That depends. If the object you are drawing has a very smooth surface you might blend the shading to make the shading more subtle. If the object's surface is rough you might want the shading to look more textured, so you probably would not blend. Hope that helps. Good luck with your ambition. Cheers Paul

Just take a deep breath and draw, you can do it. I bet you'll get a wonderful grade for your examination.
This is very interestng for me who has learned to "draw what I see" and never achieved any progress. I should be very happy if you included a big picture of the still life so I can repeat what you make.

It's a term that is like shading, you could share something or block it in. It means the same.

Look at the body, the curves, the lines, shapes, tones, textures. Start by drawing the curve of the body, an angle, a curve that you feel important the measure, and compare and contrast everything else you draw to this starting point.
