Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

As a teacher I want to thank you for breaking down your application process. Many of my students get so hung up about acrylic painting that they are scared to do it. You made it so effortless and easy to comprehend that at the end of class my students actually applauded. You broke down what I have been preaching to them and I was able to talk through and demonstrate right along with you. Keep going strong and if you're ever in NYC I'd love for you to come to my class.

I set up a still life yesterday--so this is timely. I have a darker colored drape behind a glass vase with flowers. I really love painting cloth so I've been practicing using this drape and glass objects. The glass vase, with flowers, casts a shadow onto the wall--the wall is a cream color--I couldn't rig up a dark background. I bought a large pad of canvas paper and I'm using it to practice painting objects I eventually want to a final piece. That's a great tip about the shadow box you created--I need to do the same.

Hey Guys, you don’t just have to paint flowers and fruit. I did a series called collections. African Kuba cloth in the back, then some African headrests, then some more African objects. You could do a wrench with a screwdriver and a saw. A cat on a chair with cool fabric behind. Books and nick-nacks on a table with fabric. Just stuff you have around the house.

I like to dabble in lots of mediums. I've had a small set of water mixable oils for a while now (um....2 years?). I bought them thinking it would be a good alternative to regular oils because you wouldn't have to deal with solvents, etc. and thinking it would be a quicker clean up (not true). Anyway --- I went on a plein air excursion with a few friends and brought my watercolors. Didn't create anything to write home about but I did have an epiphany. Took a photo of the scene (castle reflections in a pond) thinking maybe I'd give it another try when I got home (hate painting in public -- too insecure). When I looked at the photo it struck me that it looked nothing like what I "saw" with my naked eye. It was flat and uninspiring -- not to mention that the ripples with reflections were just not in the photograph. My friend is an oil painter and since I've got the supplies but not the confidence I decided to concentrate on that medium for awhile - as it is the only way to improve. Decided that I might as well use up those H2O oils as I don't care for them too much and won't be replacing them. First time ever setting up a still life ---- vegetables/fruits so far. Using canvas paper cut into 8x10 squares. Only have about 8 tubes so it's making me work harder at improving my color mixing skills. I am really amazed at how different it is to work from life!! I am loving it and actually producing some decent renditions. I love looking for colors that you aren't at first aware of (like my eggplant painting --- the light bouncing off the shiny skin and the pale purples and blues reflecting back). I am having a blast. Thank you for your tips and inspiration. Now I need to make me a black box too!

Once again an excellent session! I particularly like how you formed the grapes and the hydrangeas. Very helpful. Do you think that painting in oils made you paint looser, versus acrylics? I tried painting some flowers like that ( in Acrylics) it didn’t work out that well. Just boggled my mind.

  • @paintcoach

I'm not sure. I have not painted with acrylics in a long time. I would imagine the fast dry time would make it difficult to move and manipulate the paint once it's on there.
