My name is Sotep. My purpose has always been communicating stories through the visual arts. I make videos helping Artists on their journey as they face the challenges that come with being a creative soul in this world.
🎨 My Story:
I was that broke kid obsessed with art all through school and college, But ended up dropping out of college as my Portrait and commission business really took off and have not looked back since! I have been very fortunate and traveled many different countries painting Murals in Australia, Thailand, Barcelona and my home, the UK.

This video was very informative and broke things down really well. Its not uncommon that someone can do something but can't really talk about how they did it. You actually talked about every decision, the reason and then executed it, while still showing the the development (adding/subtracting) of those choices. Do you use Zoom, Google Duo/Meet, Discord? Do you take international appointments? Can I ask if you have a flat rate or is it different rates for characters or letters? Also, can you share your rate?

One of the better graf tutorials I've seen on youtube, it's nice to see a writer treat his viewers like he assumes they can draw a circle. I would of loved a video like this first starting out.

dahm Robert this is a comment a i love to see. Tbh the whole reason i wanted to share my process as I got tired of others explain how to draw things like circles treating the viewer like they cant even do that, I know most people like yourself can already draw but just to have someone share how they would go about tackling the process is enough I find to help others. Even if someone was to watch and say i absolutely hate your letters at-least the viewer has a greater understanding of what it is they do like.

@@sotepniques I grew up essentially teaching myself, I remember stealing every cap off of cleaning supplies and trying to mod them with a needle and a lighter lol. The only way i got to see new styles back then was hit up train yards until artcrimes.com came out and people think its easy to just bite someone's shit but you've got to have fore thought and i feel like videos like this teach that. I could of saved myself countless hours of trial and error if i had references like this but on the real i wouldn't of changed it, had alot of fun along the way. Just hope the younger generation can appreciate the shoulders they are standing on.

I kind of disagree in regards to the “tag first” approach. Actually, the “tag first” approach is key to anyone starting out, it helps in one learning letter construction, spacing/flow, and being able to see the letters. So, I wouldn’t recommend anyone starting out to be skipping that step. “Tag first” is not the equivalent of drawing circles, but actually more so a way to teach artists how to lay down an outline before adding flesh to the piece. Like drawing the an outline for character before fleshing it out. If I were to draw a person, I would use lines to achieve appropriate proportions, structure, and then add layers from there. Circles are rather rudimentary. But many artists start off drawing outlines to learn how to see and draw the human figure. From here, it is actually the artist’s job to push that approach beyond basic looking letters into more complex looking styles. I’ve seen artists who still use the “tag first” approach, and are able to do really complex wild style. It just seems to depend on the artist and whether they challenge themselves to push the boundaries. With this said, I think what we need are for artists to start showing more complex pieces using the “tag first” approach, most that I’ve seen are beginner based and tend to use beginner letter styles as demonstration, even though I don’t think anyone should have to since people should be able to understand how to use it extensively and masterfully. But since that doesn’t seem to be the case for some people, it would help if artists showed people how to use the “tag first” outline to achieve advanced looking work. One thing I’ve learned is if I want to my letters to be complex, start with a tag that looks strange, or complex, from there flesh it out, and then add hookups, etc…Once you do that you can erase the tag, if one draws it in lightly, you shouldn’t see it, and then add colour.

@@YShape Yeah if you're stealing some else's work.... of course it's not yours...... I don't know why you went there but yeah. I'm saying that graffiti isn't something that can really be taught. It's your mind puking a word or phase or whatever, onto a surface of your choosing. I think the art world is too snoody as it is. I don't do illegal pieces anymore because.... jail.... but I still do pieces. And I couldn't even name my style. Semi-semi-wild I guess. But to be honest, I've had people bite my work before. I wasn't all that upset. More flattering. Although, the people that he was telling about "his" piece already knew it was mine. As for crutches, I mean, it depends on what you're doing and what crutch you're using. All art is derivative of something or someone. Inspiration itself is a form of deriving motivation and direction of a work of art. Then there's people that simply want to draw something because they like drawing, but suck at it, so they watch something like this and try to copy it.

i fucking swear.... so many graffiti artists on youtube, talking for 10 minutes with filler words. its like, "dude, i know you can tag, but your teaching skills couldnt teach a kindergartner how to chew food" BUT YOU MY DUDE, this is how a tutorial is done. this is the graffiti psalm. broken down, in laymans terms, able to use simple constructs to create complex ideas. damn right this is the best graffiti tutorial on youtube. like FUCKKKK why did it take watching so many videos to find someone who knows how to ACTUALLY fucking teach this.

I call em bars ^^ Its something I've never seen talked about but seems fundamental to good letters. I normally put a few lines down to mark the rough location of the letters, then start putting down the bars to form them.
