I tried them when I first started on planted tanks, with the separate bottle for each element found it a bit of a pain, not to mention expensive. Use E.I dosing now with dry ferts, far more economical and simple to use.

Thanks for watching Dominic. They are totally different, Excel is a form of liquid carbon and Flourish is a comprehensive liquid plant fertiliser. If you wanted to choose one supplement I would recommend Seachem Flourish as per bottle instructions.
Hey doing planted 5 gallon tank for shrimp how you know your not dosing too much for iron and potassium?
Geordie, Can I use Sea Chem Flourish and Excel and other Sea Chem products in my 110 gallon planted tank while I want to use Seachem Purigen or Chemipure Green in my 2 Oase canisters to polish my water? I have black algae growth on the plants, rocks and driftwood. I'm concerned that Flourish and Excel and other products will be absorbed by the Purigen and/or Chemipure Green. Should I still consider the Purigen and/or Chemipure in the canisters? Great informative video!!!!

Hi there, Thank you, and I appreciate it very much. I have the same setup in my filters with the Purigen. The purigen will not absorb Flourish and Excel. I would recommend adding the plant supplements when the lights are on. That way, the plants can absorb the nutrients quickly and more efficiently during the photosynthesis period. Hope this helps😊👍
Might get some smaller bottles of each and try following the Seachem routine. Do you dose Excel at all?

Your help and expertise would be very appreciated, thanks jas.

Hi Jas, sounds like you've been doing your homework which is cool. Water changes and general water conditioning go with Prime and Stability. Ferts I would go with Trace, Potassium and then Iron after a couple of months if you're using a nutrient rich substrate (your crypts will benefit from such a substrate). All Seachem products as per bottle instructions. Hope this helps and best of luck with your setup

Hi , you mentioned you have your own dosing schedule or is it the same as seachem done but just without Phosphorous?
@GEORDIESCAPER
3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yeah I dose the Seachem way without the phosphorus as I seem to encounter algae issues when I dose phosphorous.
I don't dose a new setup for the first month or longer especially if I'm using vitro stem plants, When I do start to use fertilizer I normally half the recommended dose. I like to dose daily. Because I have few tanks I like to experiment. One tank I don't dose anything because the stem plants used are classed as weeds. One area I don't slack on is subtrate. I either use soil or stuff to go under gravel. I'm not a fan of just using inert subtrate and root tabs. I love my Crypts which are root feeders as you know.
@GEORDIESCAPER
3 жыл бұрын
Seems you've got it nailed Emma, great stuff. I like to experiment on different tanks like yourself, see how they go. I only used inert substrates as decoration/detail as in a beach area or sandy/gravel riverbed. A nutrient rich substrate makes a world of difference in a planted tank.
When you look at the ppm change per amount added, I don't understand how you can say they are very concentrated.
Hey can you recommend a good way to test for phosphorus and iron and potassium if there are ways to test?
@GEORDIESCAPER
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not the best with testing If I'm being totally honest. Personally I would buy a good overall test kit and TDS pen/checker.
@JacobMcMarley
2 жыл бұрын
SeaChem actually makes an Iron test that measures to less than .05 mg/L. It's a bit cumbersome of a test as it uses a dry reagent and waiting 5 minutes for results, then another 30 before retesting after adding another dose. I'm not sure about phosphorus but I'm sure SeaChem makes one for that too. Iron is one of the most important minerals, especially if you aren't using Co2, because the iron is what is converted to Co2 by the flourish and flourish excel (which I don't think excel was mentioned??). I'm not an expert but I've been using SeaChem products in conjunction with my own living spreadsheets for almost 2yrs now.
Should I start with following their schedule step by step and using all of the bottles including phosphorus?

A good guide to start with, that's the way I started to use them. Eventually you'll get the feel of your setup and know what's needed, maybe more of one supplement than another and vice versa. I'll be doing another video soon of the way I dose now, not too far off the guide but I want to try and simplify it so it's not as daunting to start with. One thing for sure as that the guide works amazingly well.
Can i ask a slightly non related question. If i have sand or gravel in my tank, can i still grow plants?

Hi there and thankyou. To be on the safe side and get the best success/results I would follow the Seachem dosing calendar or as per bottle instructions. I still do this on my tanks low and high energy.
If I can't buy all just 1 or 2 from it , what is your advice for me

Get flourish comprehensive and potassium, you can get nitrate and phosphorus from feeding fish food
Phosphorus is not highly concentrated in order to achieve 1ppm in a 20 gallon you need to put 16ml that's a hell of fertilizer
hellou you keep open bottles in refrigerator or not?

The tanks at my old house did very well with Flourish and Flourish Excel being used to the recommended dosings. I additionally dosed with Iron once a week, but no more because at the time I didn't know how to test Iron level and didn't want to overdo it. But my plants were growing so fast it was annoying to keep up with the trimming, and all this from an ignorant beginner that bought the three bottle SeaChem starter pack (Flourish,Fourish Excel, and Flourish Iron).
How much do i put for a 5 gallon
@GEORDIESCAPER

Best to dose as per bottle instructions or if you don't have the bottle yet all the dosing instructions are on seachems website. Here's a link to Flourish for example: www.seachem.com/flourish.php
honestly, I don't use Seachem Ferts, They're are a bit too watered down and really expensive. Seachem Excel is great for Bba tho
@GEORDIESCAPER

Understand with the cost but I'm the opposite, I honestly think they're quite highly concentated compared to others I've used over the years, therefore because of the smaller doses I seem to get a fair bit longer use from a bottle. Suppose this all this depends on the size of tank and other factors.

You will never get honest answers about products on the internet because fish keepers get sponsored by the manufacturers with tons of free products for fantastic reviews. Look at the price of Seachem products - its worth 'waffeling' facts while waiting for the courier to deliver some SEACHEM!
@GEORDIESCAPER

Hi there, Appreciate your feedback. Seachem sponsors me for honest reviews, not scripted reviews, which is why I partnered them. This agreement allows me to be genuine and honest and it’s something I appreciate and value. I've used Seachem products for years before the sponsorship. Being totally honest they do seem expensive but no more than most of the leading ferts/conditioners and they are highly concentrated, therefore last quite a bit longer than some of the more inexpensive products. I pride myself on my honesty and would never intentionally mislead anyone. I would rather say nothing on a particular product than lie about it. I agree, I do seem to 'waffle' not the most literate of guys 🤣🤣
I do use Pristine and Prime every water change. I have used Excel for algae’s which works well. I do seem to have a deficiency though so need to add a separate dose, I think it’s Potassium as there are holes in my Amazon Swords leaves., they also look a little pale
