    Geordie, Can I use Sea Chem Flourish and Excel and other Sea Chem products in my 110 gallon planted tank while I want to use Seachem Purigen or Chemipure Green in my 2 Oase canisters to polish my water? I have black algae growth on the plants, rocks and driftwood. I'm concerned that Flourish and Excel and other products will be absorbed by the Purigen and/or Chemipure Green. Should I still consider the Purigen and/or Chemipure in the canisters? Great informative video!!!!

    Hi there, Thank you, and I appreciate it very much. I have the same setup in my filters with the Purigen. The purigen will not absorb Flourish and Excel. I would recommend adding the plant supplements when the lights are on. That way, the plants can absorb the nutrients quickly and more efficiently during the photosynthesis period. Hope this helps😊👍

    Hi Jas, sounds like you've been doing your homework which is cool. Water changes and general water conditioning go with Prime and Stability. Ferts I would go with Trace, Potassium and then Iron after a couple of months if you're using a nutrient rich substrate (your crypts will benefit from such a substrate). I don't dose a new setup for the first month or longer especially if I'm using vitro stem plants, When I do start to use fertilizer I normally half the recommended dose. I like to dose daily. Because I have few tanks I like to experiment. One tank I don't dose anything because the stem plants used are classed as weeds. One area I don't slack on is subtrate. I either use soil or stuff to go under gravel. I'm not a fan of just using inert subtrate and root tabs. I love my Crypts which are root feeders as you know.

  • @GEORDIESCAPER

    @GEORDIESCAPER

    Seems you've got it nailed Emma, great stuff. I like to experiment on different tanks like yourself, see how they go. I only used inert substrates as decoration/detail as in a beach area or sandy/gravel riverbed. A nutrient rich substrate makes a world of difference in a planted tank.

    SeaChem actually makes an Iron test that measures to less than .05 mg/L. It's a bit cumbersome of a test as it uses a dry reagent and waiting 5 minutes for results, then another 30 before retesting after adding another dose. I'm not sure about phosphorus but I'm sure SeaChem makes one for that too. Iron is one of the most important minerals, especially if you aren't using Co2, because the iron is what is converted to Co2 by the flourish and flourish excel (which I don't think excel was mentioned??). I'm not an expert but I've been using SeaChem products in conjunction with my own living spreadsheets for almost 2yrs now.

I'll be doing another video soon of the way I dose now, not too far off the guide but I want to try and simplify it so it's not as daunting to start with. One thing for sure as that the guide works amazingly well.

I additionally dosed with Iron once a week, but no more because at the time I didn't know how to test Iron level and didn't want to overdo it. But my plants were growing so fast it was annoying to keep up with the trimming, and all this from an ignorant beginner that bought the three bottle SeaChem starter pack (Flourish,Fourish Excel, and Flourish Iron).

This agreement allows me to be genuine and honest and it’s something I appreciate and value. I've used Seachem products for years before the sponsorship. Being totally honest they do seem expensive but no more than most of the leading ferts/conditioners and they are highly concentrated, therefore last quite a bit longer than some of the more inexpensive products. I pride myself on my honesty and would never intentionally mislead anyone. I would rather say nothing on a particular product than lie about it.
