And my Monte-Carlo is finally after one and a half month taking roots and spreading. Note: i does seem that my plabts who needs c02 still don't like the environment, so i think i'll stop using these. Thank you for running the experiment and telling us the results!

Everyone who uses CO2 tablets finds out that it raises their pH and hardness. They're all most likely sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) tablets. It's often used in vitamin or antacid tablets to produce that 'fizz' as it dissolves. As your pH gets higher, it takes longer to dissolve the tablets so even though the reaction does produce CO2, it can't ever give nearly enough needed. They're not wrong in that it does produce CO2, just not in the quantities we need.

When you first showed the tablets the first thought that jumped to mind was that these are seltzer tablets. The results of your water testing would seem to confirm my suspicions. Seltzer tablets are made of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda pressed into a tablet). They should definitely increase carbonate hardness because they're directly adding carbonates to the water.

If you’re strapped for CO2, you can make one. Just use a 1 liter bottle, 1 cup of sugar, 1/3 packet of quick rise yeast. Drill a hole into the cap and glue an air line tube into it. Attach a co2 diffuser stone to the other end. Fill the bottle 2/3 with water and shake up before placing on the cap. Put the diffusing en into the tank and leave it. Runs for two weeks before redoing the bottle mixture, and if you have animal stock, ALSO use an air stone to not kill them. Cost like $35.

CO2 tablets are Baking Soda. You can raise pH and kH with Baking Soda... and a very small amount of CO2 will be released as it reacts with acids in the water. Only good if someone has very low kH and very soft water but wants to keep livebearers or Africans.

Excellent video, like others say - looks like a chalk tablet. A few months ago I added a CO2 system to my tank. The canister is rented with a £50 deposit, costs £15 to refill and the needle hasn’t moved since day 1 so I think it’ll last about 8months between refills. The regulator and defuser cost £150 but that’s a one off purchase. The change in the plants is amazing - and technically it’s all very easy. There’s basically no extra maintenance. I thought CO2 would be expensive and complicated, so far, it’s working out to be nearly 0 running cost and it’s created no extra work for me at all. Wish I’d done it years ago!

It's not Co2 in the pills but some kind of acid, like seachems Acid buffer. The way it works is it dissolves available carbonate hardness (Kh) in your water into available co2. Seems like these pills are a combination of acid and alkalinity buffer, to try and maintain a stable ph while dissolving the carbonate hardness into co2.. and clearly doesn't do a great job at it lol. This is also probably why some people see actual changes and others don't see any change at all, because it depends on your water parameters and what is available for these pills to alter.

It's the opposite of an acid, it's a base. A carbonate/bicarbonate to be exact, probably mixed with an acid, most likely citric acid as it has a solid form to form carbon dioxide and a citric acid salt. [on a side note: CO₂, please, not Co2 (Co ist Cobalt, a heavy metal)]

  • @cebongjantan1370

if you want to use co2 tablets more effectively, place the tablets in the diffuser box, so that the gas is trapped in the box, then dissolves with water. box I mean like the bottle upside down on the tropica co2 system. in my country using a DIY box for co2 tablets, effectively lowering the ph from 7.4 to 6.7 and getting a green co2 indicator. You can replace the tablet with a cylinder of co2, and save your money, because an inverted bottle doesn't need high pressure to fill it. only 1 bubble per second, put the co2 hose into the bottle without going through the diffuser, you don't really need high pressure.

If the co2 from the tablet doesn't get show in the drop checker, I wonder if it has the same properties, or if not just basically a tablet version of Excel.

I started using DIY CO2 recently with the baking soda and citric acid method. I have seen lots of improvement in the plants in that aquarium. That CO2 runs high pressure so I may be able to get away with hooking 2 tanks up to it. I have had issues with the liquid from the bottle getting into the lines going into the tank. hi! I haven't finished the video yet but i bought these same tablets from my local fish store (a small business) and happened to fid your video! I wanted to say that mine were IMMEDIATELY FIZZY. I dropped one in and got lots of bubbles instantly! It seems like maybe the ones people are buying off amazon aren't working as well for some reason? I'm not sure where the guy at the fish store procures his from, but they are the exact same bottle! I just tried my first tablet ever so idk how has affected my tank (if at all), but i'm hoping it will revive a new plant i have that isn't doing very well.

Which mixture and diffusor are you using for your DIY-CO2-bottle on your 20L Cube? I am still using a Dennerle CO2 Micro Flipper with Bio-CO2 on my 30L tank and was already thinking of a diffusor upgrade, but i tried one from my father and the pressure wasn't enough. Enjoying your videos, keep it up.👍

I'm using the diffusers from Aquario, love them! The mixture is basically 250 gr sugar and 250 gr water. I heat that up and then add in 3 gelatin leaves. The entire recipe is here kzread.info/dash/bejne/gaikyM6tfpSbXZs.html

That's not possible 😊 so it runs 24/7 which isn't a problem, just make sure you have some surface agitation at night to provide oxygen

Was trying a LOT cheaper chinese version (2 different types): was adding 6-8 tablets at once into a 30 L aquarium's filter (for the best water flow) and the CO2 checker's color NEVER changed!!

my theory is this might be some form of maybe a calcium carbonate. The reason why it dissolve slower over the past couple of days is because the more of these tablets dissolve in the water column, the more it reduces the acidity simply because of the carbonate (and maybe the calcium), as for the GH, it's probably due to the calcium in the tablet or what ever it is that is in the tablet, as for the KH, well.. it's a carbonated tablet so there's your answer.

Few things to note here: They write CO₂ wrong. Co (with a little o) is Cobalt, a heavy metal which is completely different from carbon dioxide. Also they change how they write it throughout their text. Also they use a large 2 instead of a small one at the bottom, which I guess is acceptable, but for a company really embarassing. 2nd of all my guess is that it's a form of carbonate/bicarbonate, judging from the rate at which it dissolves most likely soddium or potassium bicarbonate. Which would increase pH as well as carbonate hardness. Bicarbonates and sometimes carbonates can be used by plants directly (e.g. elodea/egeria densa; myriophyllum heterophyllum), known as bicarbonate-assimilation, however that requires a lot of energy (compared to using carbon dioxide directly) and can't be used by all plants. So it's god damn stuipid to use those.

@@MJAquascaping exactly this one. To try co2 tablet. I bought the chinese brand you showed. And I don't think it really works. Some particles of the tablet don't dissolve so there will always be white things floating around in the tank. Luckily, it just cost me USD1.5 for 1box, 36tablets.

I don't know to be honest, I guess I would have to buy a simple gauge to check it. But yeah probably not enough for a bazooka diffuser.

What if it’s simply not enough co2? I started adding co2 to my tank 3g. I was adding 1 bubble per 3 sec and slowly increased it but those first few days it was blue all day

If all your plants are root feeders you should be fine, but if you have some moss or epiphytes then you might need some liquid fertilizer as well
