    Hi everyone! This is actually easier to do than explaining it, but I did my best to simplify the process so that you will be well on your way to zooming through your blanket. Seriously, it's a game changer and a lot of fun! I hope you enjoy the video and let me know what you are working on this month! xx

    I've been crocheting for years, but gave up on trying to create granny square designs as I could never figure out how to join them together properly, no matter how many 'how-to' videos I watched. I stuck to other patterns, making granny squares with scrap yarn when I was bored and throwing them in a bag to accumulate, figuring maybe I'd use them one day, or just donate them to a crochet friend. Found this video by chance and, bored, decided to give it a go. It took me almost 2 hours to finish joining 12 squares, but I've finally got the hang of it! By the end, I was whizzing through them easily. Thank you SO much for this video, I'm gonna have so much fun this weekend with that bag full of squares I've stashed lol ALSO: The diagram at the start was SO HELPFUL! I'm the worst at reading and understanding diagrams, but this was so simple, it's like a switch clicked inside my brain and suddenly it all made sense. Thank you again!!

    I am very good at doing the wrong thing. So I put a stitch marker at the 2nd corner of each square. Have ended up with some funny twisted crochet. 🙂 I am easily distracted by my cats or husband, so need that reminder of where I am supposed to be heading in my crochet. Love this method. Did a U shaped shawl a couple of years ago. Drew plan of my path on paper first to keep me working in the correct direction as U shape is not as easy as a square shape.

    This is what I have been looking for. I like you method better. I like that you work the full corner and that you don't have a chain space in between the clusters. I am going to start joining some of my squares tonight. Now I used a 4.5 mm hook for my granny square. Should I stay with that size or use the recommended 3.5mm hook?

    That’s a very good question. This would work if all of your squares can be joined with the same granny square style but would be hard to do if some were solid granny squares. Are all your squares finished? This usually works best when you have one remaining round to do. I would suggest doing a flat seam join . In my opinion that would be less stressful. Here are some of my favorites: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmFnq8ysabrTZZs.html

    @@PlayHookywithMe thank you for getting back to me! I have about a quarter of a queen blanket done, I hadn’t planned on being so ambitious for my first blanket but I was having so much fun making granny squares. Now they range from sizes 5x5, 8x8, 10x10 and 15x15 lol 😅 I’ll check out your other video! If you have any other advice it would be much appreciated

    kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2ueu9hwcpatnaQ.html I do a join as you go at the end of this video but it’s just a brief explanation. I will try to do a fresh video about hexagons soon but it’s really just a case of joining the way you would with a granny square. I have a video link to that one at the end of this video that you commented on. Hope that helps but if you would like me to do a video , let me know! Xx

    This is the easiest join as you go. I just made a large granny blanket. I'm half done with another one. The way that I'm doing it is much more confusing. I have had to frog whole rows for a little mistake..you leave the corner loose until the next row.i understand it but get confused. So Thank you ,I will be trying your way the next time.

    Can you connect 4 squares for the front and 4 squares for the back of a "man's" bucket kind of looking hat. But the borders look like your's. So i was thinking i could join them like you have

  • @PlayHookywithMe

    @PlayHookywithMe

    You can . It would be easiest to join them together in separate parts in the shape you want. You would have more ends to weave in but it would be less stressful than trying to do it in a certain order all at once. More like this way: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2p_zdeFoarNYsY.htmlsi=jJ2Y5Y3p2eYT5FZI The square pattern is different but you could use the same approach with your pattern.

    This is so great thank you.. I have looked at other videos and felt this was too hard for me … but I think I can try having watched your method. I have made lots of the ‘inner granny’s’ with a chain between the side clusters… should I also add a chain when joining the sides ?.. thanks for your help

  • @PlayHookywithMe

    Oh good - I hope you find it helpful. I don’t think you will need to add a chain when you are working on joining the sides … but I would definitely try it both ways and see what you like better. You might find it’s looking /feeling too tight without the added chain on the sides as you join. You’ll know right away what you prefer 👍🏻 💕

    Should you block your granny squares before or after doing this connecting? Edit to add: I am making a sweater

    That’s a good question. It’s really a personal preference. Personally, I like to block before joining. I think it’s easier to see what you’re working with, especially if you’re making a garment. But it’s definitely not necessary if everything is laying flatly for you.

    @@PlayHookywithMe It looks much better. In my opinion, the ch 3 method to start new rows just looks too thin & doesn’t really look as nice. When using a StSc, it literally resembles a double crochet stitch.

    @@PlayHookywithMe I disagree! People use the StSc because it resembles the dc. Definitely much better alternative to the ch 3. One thing I’ve learned over the last 30 years I’ve been crocheting is that people tend to crochet differently & have differing opinions. I think the general consensus though is to get rid of the ch 3 option to start rows that call for dc. ;) Also, to clarify, what I’m referring to are called Stackable Single Crochet. :) I’m not talking about the “standing” sc. They are slightly different in appearance.
