How to do Polished Lime Surface finish

Lime is an age old binder which was used as a construction material worldwide before it was replaced by cement in the 1950s. At Aanandaa, we chose to build our #sustainablehouse with lime as the primary binder material along with rammed earth and stone.
In this video series, we are partnering with Malvika Mehta, Founder of MLIME BUILD LLP, on understanding lime as a binder, it's properties, ways to include it in your building, and its pros and cons vis a vis cement.
The closed loop of lime's lifecycle is why it is sustainable, recyclable, low energy and more relevant than ever before. Companies like MLIME, and people like Malvika are helping house builders adopt this material with standardised products, on site training and theoretical know how.

    Ok. I understand Stearic acid as fat from the soap . I have been using it for the last few years for the finishing works in a restoration project in Italy. Here we get an olive oil soap with the colour removed. Our marble dust is graded , our lime is aged underwater. In use since Roman times. Thank-you both for concise and practical advise.

    I've been waiting for this one! Grateful for the information about polished lime. You've got me Googling for a marble dust alternative.. as it's unavailable in large quantities unless you are a pool builder. I wonder if powderized eggshells have enough calcium carbonate.. or even oyster shell powder.. hmm. Thanks for the gift of learning today🎉

    There are so many types of lime. When you say lime, in europeans countries there is NHL 2 , 3.5, 5 hydraulic lime and also air lime , Quicklime, Hydrated lime etc.. What do you use in India?

    You are lucky you have so many grades of lime readily available. It's not so easy here, as cement has really taken over! We used quick lime for foundations (and then hydrated it) and standardised hydrated lime for plasters.

    Excellent video. Hope you will make more of these in detail for people who want to construct using lime. May be you should start a learning course. A question.. is calcium stearate or using marble dust to achieve smooth finish considered sustainable, reversible and eco friendly? Just trying to figure out whether it goes well with Mother Nature.

  • @farmaanandaa

    @farmaanandaa

    The calcium stearate layer is a few microns thick. The marble lime mix layer is a few mm thick. I am not sure what happens when it's recycled or removed, but I think the volume won't be much.
