    A few things... Really Good tutorial. I have a friend who got me into chainmaille in general, and he learned byzantine before me, but you did this really well. The rings I used (more on rings below) were 18 guage aluminum solder wire, which works quite well for maille. The inside diameter was 3/16". For those of us who have no money (such as myself), you can make your own rings (like I did). All you need is the right jig, a metal rod, a power drill, and wire. I made my own jig, and have been collecting wire from multiple sources. I just paid 13 dollars for a quarter mile of steel wire, with which I am working on a vest. For just a few bracelets, buying in bags like so is alright, but making your own rings is a TON cheaper in the long run. As long as you have access to wire, then you always have a steady supply of rings.

    I learned this from a book on wire jewellery I recently got and managed to make chainmaille but it looked completely different. This video made the understand what I did 'wrong'. Instead of doing the folding down and latching onto the rings just once, I did that twice and then adding the two new rings, if that makes sense. It also creates a beautiful chain, it just looks much different :)

    This is one of the best chainmaille tutorials I've seen. I can see everything you're doing and the weave looks surprisingly simple to do! I hope you'll do one on full persian; my favorite. I have several pieces of jewelry planned for that weave but in most of the videos I've been able to find the rings look all cluttered and I can't tell one from another. You got the camera angles perfect in this one so I hope you can do the same in a full persian tutorial.

    My pliers of choice for chain maille are called Wubbers. They have a bunch of different styles and sizes. I really like them because they are very strong and comfortable to use. That said, the pliers used in the video are Xuron Chain Nose Pliers, however, after doing more chain maille I have come to prefer Wubbers for it (but the Xuron pliers are still my favorite for all other uses).

    Yes, you only link them into the inverted-v rings. it holds them up in the v-shape and holds the outer rings apart by being in-between.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I get to the weave part, I hold onto the bottom two and put on of the top rings on either side of the middle two. I part the middle rings (3 and 4) and with a new ring, I try to pick up up the top rings (5 and 6). But while your middle rings stay there and point upwards in a "v" sort of shape, mine just hang down to the bottom of the piece. If I accidentally drop it or something, it ends up looking like 2-in-2 chain with an extra jump ring on the end. I'm using 8mm jump rings, 18 gauge. Is it that my links are too big, or am I doing something wrong?

    Hi! The aspect ratio formula is Inner Diameter divided by Wire Diameter. If you did the math and get the same aspect ratio, then yes, it should work fine and just give you a bigger bracelet. As for your other rings, half persian 4-1 should work as will full persian.

    I would suggest half hard wire, dead soft will just pull out of shape too easily and hard would be ideal but it will be very difficult to work with.

    Hi! Because of the round shape of the Byzantine weave, my guess is that this particular weave was not used my in armor (however, if there are any chain maille experts out there, I would love to hear your opinion). Chain Maille in general was definitely used to make armor.

  • @beadaholique
    @beadaholique10 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I.D. refers to inner diameter but I have not seen a reference to D.I in chain maille before. I am sorry but I do not know what they are referring to. If you see AR that refers to Aspect Ratio. To make a larger chunkier version, you will want to keep the same aspect ratio just with bigger rings. We don't carry a bigger chain maille ring for this project, so when looking for rings, just keep in mind the 3.57 aspect ratio.

    I think I get it. I used a caliper and measured the 3.57mm 18 gauge jump rings and got an a.r. of 2.975. So, if I use 4.76 mm 16 gauge I would have the same a.r. thereby giving me a similar but bigger bracelet, right? This Byzantine tutorial was my first attempt at chain maille. I have about 200 rings that give me an a.r. of 5.84 do you have any suggestions for another weave I can try? Thanks for your help. Your video tutorial was great! Very easy to follow!

    As a general guideline, one inch of Byzantine equals about 26-28 rings. So for a 7 inch bracelet you will need 196. So two pack should give you enough if there are 150 rings/pkg. 18 Ga/ID 3.57mm

    The tutorial is for the byzantine chain maille technique, so unforutnately, no information on completing a finished piece of jewelry was included. The piece that she shows as an example looks to be closed with a lobster clasp. The size that you use is up to you, and would change with the size of the rings that you use. The one she shows looks to be around 10-12mm.

    Beadaholique I'm using a baby wubbers chain nose plier and my first pair of chain nose pliers which were a cheap walmart brand. I'm also using the jumpring size and gauge recommended in this video. I've tried switching pliers with the different hands to see if it would change and i still had problems. I ordered a pair of the xuron chain nose pliers from yall and waiting for them to arrive to see if that works. Also have ordered a pair of bent nose chain nose pliers to see if any of that works. I dont know but ive always had trouble with working with wire. I think me being too much of a perfectionist and making sure the jumpring is super close might be part of the problem too.

    This style of modern chain maille jewelry is typically made without soldering the open rings. In most weaves each ring is connected to several other rings and finished piece have a very strong structure that doesn't put strain on any particular jump ring seam.

    I think if you made this weave in a gunmetal, black, or antique silver finish it would look quite masculine. Some men like thicker chains, this too can add to a heavier more masculine look. To make a heavier chain, choose a thicker gauge of jump ring to work with. Best of luck and wear what makes you happy :)
