I breke oot me Scottish accent when I’m talking to me mates, especially when we’re drinking Scotch whisky. We all find it quite entertaining. I doubt that would work in Scotland though. They might think I was making fun of them. I’m not though. I’m just having a wee bit of fun. It’s probably not very accurate.

One of the main reasons Scottish accents seem so much more extreme to other English speakers is because in many cases, it isn't an accent, its an actual separate language called Scots. Some Scots only speak Scots, some speak both English and Scots separately, and the majority speak a mix of the two. The Scottish also resisted the Great Vowell Shift.

My dad is Korean, my mum is Chinese/Korean. I go to a British school with teachers from different parts of the world. My accent is a mix of English, American, Australian, Scottish but mostly English. It sounds very interesting, I switch between accents mid-sentence.(When I say English accents, I mean RP) Edit: I did a DNA test recently, found out that I also have Northern English heritage (Yorkshire in specific) only a couple of generations ago on my paternal side. My accent has also changed in the past 10 months, much less posh, got a very distinct South Yorkshire sound to it. The American is almost gone as well. Weird🤷‍♂️

I'm a 74-year-old American man in Southern California and I've been analyzing and practicing the Scottish burr since age 12! I've gotten pretty good at speaking it, but speaking it and understanding it are two different things; I still have a devil of a time understanding what some Scots are saying. When watching KZread, I have to use closed captions to understand the thickest burrs. One of my favorite TV mini-series is "The Field of Blood," starring Scottish actress Jayd Johnson, set it Glasgow, and the many characters in it spoke as many different Scottish dialects. So I had to run closed captions on it to understand most of them. On KZread just the other day, I ran across a video by a Scottish man who rescued a tiny kitten and bicycled around Europe with her. His burr was so thick I could understand less than 5%. When you speak, Erin, I understand about 95% without closed captions. What a relief!

One thing I think people don’t think too much about is the different prosody when speaking with a Scottish accent. That you tend to go down on the stressed syllable and up in the end, as opposed to southern accent where you go up on the stressed syllable and down in the end . I find that particularly interesting since where I come from in Sweden (in Göta-dialects) we basically do the same thing as you, but the rest of Sweden don’t. So when I speak English with a Swedish accent I get a similar prosody as in Scotland.

My favorite is Outlander. It's fantastic if you are into the Scottish accent. Here in America it's on Starz channel.

Thank you Erin! I'm working on learning different Scottish accents for roleplaying games, and your videos are great :) You speak very clearly and it's easy to make out your different vowels. To me your accent sounds rather similar to a Glaswegian one, would you agree or is it my untrained ear? Is there something you think sets yours apart? (I realise that there are probably huge differences just within Glasgow, but still :) )
