I grew up with immigrant parents and my mom doesn’t have a thick accent, my dads was super thick. If he watched too much Spanish news, I couldn’t understand him for an hour afterwards. But at the coffee shop I work at, whenever someone orders and has a thick Spanish accent, almost all my coworkers get their order wrong and I have to correct it. They’re always like “how did you know what they said?” Trust me, I had a lifetime of practice for this moment. Now watching this, if this is what my dad sounded like to some people, no wonder he had a hard time being understood 😂😂😂.

James’ lines: Alright, now, there’s not a TikTok for monikers, big man. I know you’re coming on all peely-wally up there but I’m going to help you down out the sky faster than a whippet gets a hard-on. Okay? Now, I’m going to get you down but here is what I need you to do first, okay. Have a deep breath. I just want you to take a deep breath. In. Out. In. Out. You alright there, wee man? You alright? Deep breath! Right. Deep breath and you need to stay calm. Now, listen to me very carefully. On the wee panel of switches in front of you, there’s a brown doodah with a red jack. About the size of a what do you call it? American cookie. Oreo cookie, not a Keebler. Alright. There’s a wee thing about the size of an Oreo cookie. I thought it was a Keebler. What’s the doodah coming in at? Mate, the brown doodah that looks like an Oreo cookie. What’s it’s coming in at? No. No. Repeat. Brown. The colour. Brown. Aye. What’s the brown doodah coming in at? Good. Two heads are better than one. Right. Have a wee shufty out the window down at the ground. Tell me if you can rest your goggles upon Auchentoshan plane station. Come on. You try it with him. Listen, big man. Tempus Fugit cause we’re only going to get a crack at this once. Now, there’s a wee burgundy hingmajig on the dash, give it a wee tug. Aw no. Aw no. In the name of the wee man. Ah. Right. Radar’s got you leaving Scottish air space. This connections getting crunchier than a bag of smashed crabs. Alright. Godspeed, you lot. Glasgow out.

Retired United pilot here. Love this skit! My first few years flying to London or anywhere in Europe starting back in the 1990's, this was EXACTLY how our communications with Scottish Control would be! I laughed so hard watching this because it is so accurate. All of the U.S. pilots were continually asking the controllers to repeat themselves, I am sure that it irritated the crap out of them. We would look at each other in the cockpit and say "what the hell did he say?" My last 5 years of flying over there before I retired at the end of 2020 were much easier to understand them. Either I got better at understanding "Scottish" or they got better at speaking American English!

I laughed so hard at this. I studied in Scotland for a year and stayed for two years after just cause. Coming from a west African country that was a real culture shock for my first year. I remember I got to the train station from the airport to get to my university and heard someone speaking on phone and I thought. Did I land in the right country? The accent was insane. I listened intently for sometime to try and identify the language until I heard the word early. I called home as soon as I could to narrate that experience. Now back home I am always delighted to hear the proud Scots speak in their native tongue. Will definitely be visiting again after COVID-19 clears. Thanks SNL.

I managed well with the accents, though did get nearly daily headaches 😂. One guys accent was so thick that even other Scots couldn’t understand him lol. I can remember sitting in a senior committee meeting, he was worked up, and appealing for me to back him. I understood the first two minutes, then no, uh uh just his mouth moving with sounds 😂. Nobody else understood either, we all cracked up. He did get what he wanted eventually, a great big Jock with a big heart 😀👍 I’m a bit Scots too, love Glasgow, love Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

Translation of James McAvoy's bits from a Scot :) "Alright, now there's no time for names mate. I know you're going pale up there but I'm going to get you down faster than a whippet gets a hard on. Now I'm gonna get you down, but, here is what I need you to do first. Ok, have a deep breath. I just want you to take a deep breath. In out in out. You alright there wee man? You alright? Deep breath, right! Deep breath! And you need to stay calm Now listen to me very carefully. On the wee panel of switches in front of you there is a brown doo-dah with a red jack about the size of a, fucking, what do you call it... American cookie. Not a Keebler? No alright. Theres a small thing the size of an oreo cookie, right? I thought it was a Keebler. What's the doo-dah coming in at (reading)? Mate, the brown doo-dah that looks like an oreo cookie. What's it coming in at? No, brown. The colour brown. Yes! What's the brown doo-dah coming in at? Good. Two heads are better than one. Right, have a little look out the window down at the ground. Tell me if you can see Auchentoshan Plane Station. Listen big man we're only going to get one shot at this. The little burgundy thing on the dash, give it a little tug. Oh no, no, oh my God. Radars got you leaving Scottish airspace. This connections getting crunchier than a bag of smashed crabs. God speed you lot. Glasgow out."

A few notes: Doo-dah is a word used to refer to an object you can't remember the name of. Wee Man is "little man". You can use this to refer to anyone male, even if you don't know them personally. Auchentoshan is a whisky distillery near Glasgow.

Now, there's not much time here and I know you're starting to feel unwell but we'll get you down from the sky faster than a whippet (dog) gets an erection ok?" "Now I'm going to get you down but here is what I need you to do first, ok? Take a deep breath." "I just want you to take a big breath. In, out, in, out. Are you ok there sir? Are you ok?" "Deep breaths, ok? Deep breaths! And you need to stay calm!"
